I just got home from one of my best diabetes appointments in 42 years. What a treat! Our old diabetes nurse practitioner moved to Australia in April, and in her place is a fellow who has 43-years of pharmacy work behind him and who is REALLY into figuring out how to make diabetics tick better.
He's the first person who has bothered to describe Dawn Effect to me, hormone by hormone, explained why we are more resistant to insulin first thing in the morning and how to deal with it, and then taught me a bunch of tricks on my pump that I should have known where there but never really thought to look up on the manual.
I think I can finally reel in these impossible sugar spikes I have in the next three days. There IS a way to deal with them! Can't wait to go back in three months! I usually don't get too excited about my doctor/nurse visits, but this time someone LISTENED to me and didn't brush off my problems but actually had some concrete solutions. Sigh.
Now I can actually look forward to my big appointment next week with Canada's #1 diabetes guru at McMaster's University. I'll be very pleased if their patient counseling can match this guy's! :-)
