my sodium level on last blood test was 129,and has been in that area for 3 years.

What can I do to reach a better reading,as my doctor has not been helpful.I am confused about all I have read about low sodium.My a1c is 7.1,am 76 years old and do take high blood pressure medication.Have been slowly losing some weight,but really have to fight to do so

Americans consume way more salt than needed for the body. Of course it's the food manufacturers that are to blame for a lot of that and then people use salt on top of it at the table and/or in cooking. I try to pick lower sodium versions of food when they are available because many foods have natural sodium in them. I have recently posted a review on a book series called "Eat This, Not That" and was stunned to find the sodium contents in many products and restaurant choices. I hope that people look at the food labels for sodium when comparing products because there are differences. It's good that you're aware of what to do and how to do it. Sometimes shopping, cooking and eating right is a challenge but knowledge is power.

Thanks for your comments.I am watching my sodium but l am under the minimum reading for sodium level on my blood tests.
Should l be eating more sodium?

Probably. Sodium is an electrolyte and needed to keep your body chemistry and the electrical signals going to your cells and organs right. 129 isn't super low but it is low.

on my last blood test,my sodium is still lower than 135.I have cut salt as much as i can as well as drinking less water.A friend is at 113 and her doctor has her drinking Gatorade.
Does anyone have some suggestions on what l might do?

A simple way would be to eat more salt. If your sodium is low, it shouldn't affect your blood pressure.

Hello there Jim! In my grocery shopping adventures, I have seen foods now coming out with lower sodium and they still taste pretty good. My paternal grandparents where pointing out some GREAT foods that are out there and I actually use some of these when I am cooking. Like chicken broths (I use for keeping meats moist while roasting/baking), spaghetti sauces, cheese, tomatoes, veggies (but prefer fresh & frozen), and I also use sea salt. I decrease salt whenever I can and replace with more spices and other natural flavors.
