I went in to the Hospital last thursday and I had a CT cand done and I was told that I had Galstone in my Gallblader. and that it will have to come out, So I have set up an Anppoint On tuseday to talk the Surgren to see when this will all happen, But i am not looking forward to this, But I do know that this has to be done. One thing I don't like is that it is making me sick and in a lot of pain.

I am just asking one question , is it ture that if you are a DB that it takes longer to heal, and will I have a problem after this with my BS going to high lik I am now because of the pain. Also has anyone gone though this can help me out on this to understand it more.
Thank you
Anna

Believe me, I understand what you are going through where anxiety and post-surgery "stuff" is concerned. I had my gallbladder out on May 20, 2010 and at this very moment, I would take it back again and someone else's too. Yeah, I know that the gallbladder showed markers for cancer, yeah, I know that having it out was probably inevitable…but the fact that it seems that after having had this surgery, I have had a whole host of medical ills thrust upon me makes me wish I had NEVER, NEVER, NEVER had this done, if there were even the slightest alternative (and there may not have been).

I have been unable to sit up for more than 1 solid hour at a time since the surgery, I have developed mysterious gastric issues, to such a degree that my RN sister has nicknamed me "Timebomb". I now have GERD and take medicine for a condition that I'm not even sure I really believe in. A gastroenterologist told me, after extensive testing and an endoscopy that I have "chronic inactive gastritis"…which ranks right up there with one of the stupidest medical diagnoses I have ever heard! At this point in time, the crap going on with me is still a huge, PAINFUL question mark.

Sorry to sound like I am complaining, I'm really not… I know I could be WAY worse off, and I try to remember that always. The interesting thing is that I too had concerns that my diabetes was going to impact my healing, but honestly, I think that I have been in nearly optimal health (as a diabetic), so my healing may have been enhanced - at least what healing I actually did.

Ultimately though, you just never know what could happen post-surgery…PARTICULARLY with GB surgery…I know that everything I was told would happen didn't, and things I never expected have come to miserable fruition. But I still don't really have an interest in eating, and believe me, that's the cruelest aspect of all!

I wish you the best in continued recovery! Take care, and be extra good to yourself!

Hi Anna,
Sounds like you are on track Anna. I remember not having an appetite for a while after my surgery. When I did start eating, my body was quite finicky for a bit. Many things didn't sit too well. That all goes away with time though. In some ways, I wish I was still picky…my BS would be a heck of a lot better than it has been!!!
Hugs,
Sal :)

Thank you for the update. I'm glad you are home. The pain will be behind you before you know it. It's too bad we have to have pain to get better, but that's how it is. It is worth it in the long run. You are going to feel so much better!

hi anna. i had my gallbladder removed several years ago. i hurt for a couple of years and kept at my doc about checking it out. he repeatedly told me it was all complications of my diabetes and don't worry about my gall bladder. (i have discovered that with nearly everything that is wrong with a diabetic, the docs immediately blame it on the diabetes and it's a chore to get them to check for anything else). i finally got mad and told him just do the tests to satisfy my curiosity and if it showed nothing, well, my bad. after a ultrasound, my gallbladder was found to be working at 15% and he very quickly scheduled surgery. the pain after the surgery was nearly non existant. of course i had restrictions, such as lifting, but i felt great after the surgery. it is very true that diabetics heal slower than normal and the rate at which you heal will depend greatly on how well you control your bl while you are healing. i didn't do such a great job of it. it took me quite a bit longer to heal, my wounds became large circles rather than small slits and the scabbing became very deep and also hindered healing. i have three quarter size scars. BUT, don't let that scare you. it was completely due to what i was, or rather was NOT doing!!! if you take care of yourself you will have very little pain and very unnoticable scars. good luck, and i would recommend you go ahead with the surgery. gall stones can become VERY VERY painful if not removed.

I am glad you are ok. I had all kind of test for my gallblader and they showed nothing, but one of my Dr. said even the test show nothing your gallblader can still be bad. Don't understand. Went 4 times to see a Dr to have the operation and they all said now. But between the 3 Dr. they can't find out what is wrong with me. I was thinking just to tell them take it out because a friend of mine did and she is very happy. Yesterday I went on an other webside and people writing about how they felt after surgery and out of 25 only one with good news. Most of them had more pain after and wished they never had surgery. Now I don't know what to do. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my pain and nausea are sooooo much better. the only problem i have is there are now some foods i can no longer eat and that is different for everyone. some people don't have a problem with any foods and some have issues with several. for me it seems to mainly be chinese. i know several people who have had their gb removed and they are all generally happy. no one in any more pain, just the food sensativities.

What kind of test did they do to find out that your gallbladder only worked 15%? I had test done they showed nothing and the Dr. tell me they want operate but my regular Dr. tells me my gallbladder can be bad even if the test show us ok. Dont understand that. So why do all this test and still think there is something wrong.

All they did is a CT scan . and then an altra sound and that is were they found the stones. But when I went and seen my reagarl Dr he told me that my Gallblader is in flamed because of all the pain that I am still haveing and you can not touch that spot eather. But this will all be done on wedesnday the 25 th. I just hope that everything goes well .
I will let you know how thing went after wedesnday okay.

they did an ultrasound, like oneil. i don't know how that showed them what shape my gallbladder was in. i would continue to insist on whatever types of tests can be done. that's how i finally got results. sometimes you have to be a bit of a pest and be very adament that they do something, even when they don't feel the need.

Hi Anna,
For years the doctors couldn't figure out what was causing my mothers pain. They finally discovered it was her gallbladder. They were going to do the surgery lapriscopically but they couldn't because she was so impacted with gallstones that they had to take a portion of her liver out as well. The recovery was longer because she had to have the regular surgery. Any time the body goes through something like that blood sugars are going to be a high from the stress on the body. Her blood sugar came down and stabilized after a day or two. I don't say that to scare you but just to prepare you for a possibility. I pray that your problem is not as severe as my mom's was.

Best of luck to you and God Bless!!

Hi Anna,
I had surgery this past Feb., and I had no problem healing. My blood sugars were not great, and that was not a problem thank goodness.

I had my gallbladder out years ago. They took it using a lapriscope so I only had 3 small incisions. This is a less invasive surgery, and doesn't take as long to recover. Ask your surgeon about having it done that way. Hopefully that will be an option for you.

Hugs,
Sal

I had a hysterectomy since being diabetic, but my sugars are controlled so the doctor didn't seem to be to concerned, you'll need to find out what meds you should take before going to the hospital. My paper work said to take my meds, but I wasn't to eat so I didn't want to take my diabetes medicine, I did check my sugar in the morning.

They didn't have any problems, I really think if you can keep your numbers tightly controlled till your surgery date you'd be fine, but ask your doctor.

Best wished

Anna,

I have been there, the pain can be intense, especially when you are trying to rest or sleep, you are going to be fine once the gallstones are removed.
I am 6 ft. 2 in. (220 lbs) the pain brought me to my knees many times, the pain comes from the blockage of the bile duct by gallstones which are now crystalized bile, being too large to travel thru the duct effectively.

You may experience bouts of diarrhea which is a possible side effect of gallbladder removal.

Anna, If your bg is in good control it helps. There are two type of procedures for
gall bladder. It depends which procedure they use. The older form of this surgery
has a large incision. Since you are diabetic they might keep you instead of an outpatient surgery. When I had it done a few years ago it took about ten days to heal. My prayers are with you.

I can't share information on surgery but I can tell you that I am wishing you a speedy recovery and that I will be thinking of you and wishing you well. As with most surgeries, you are in the hands of medical teams that do these procedures day in and day out with great success. I know it's not that easy on you, the patient, because you are gonna have the fears and concerns. Deep breath… count backwards… you'll be fine. Keep us posted. You'll soon be wishing you'd had it done sooner as you recover and feel back to normal again.

Sorry you have Gallstones. Will your surgery be laproscopic or a large incision?Healing time can be slower for Diabetics. It seems the better your BG levels the less problems there might be. I had a big incision surgery on Aug 2 and haven't had any problems since being released from the hospital. They kept me in an extra day because I wasn't eating solid foods and my BG was low. I just made sure all my nurses knew I was Diabetic and they were very watchful for any signs of problems. Good luck and keep us posted.

I was scared before my surgery also. It's a normal reaction. Getting info from your doctor will help.
When you are sick, understress, and not eating good BS can go all over the place. Once you have the surgery and are healed then your BS will probably be better. Anything wrong with one body part seem to throw other things off.
It is a very good you plan on mentioning your diabetes to your Dr. At my pre-op apointment I asked a question about how the diabetes would be monitored during my hosp. stay. My GYN remembered that she had not written an order for a BG test prior to me being taking into the operating room. She asked me to tell the nurses to do it. Then the morning of surgery she asked me and the nurses the result. She had remembered to order all the other diabetic related proceedures.
I will remember you in pray on Tues. I have a follow up the same day with my GYN.
