So I've packed my cute clothes, my cute shoes, hair supplies, hygiene supplies, and now my bag is so full, I can barely get another thing in there. So which will I sacrifice, style or health? I'm sacrificing style because I want to live to wear that cute outfit next time. So out with my unnecessary outfit and shoes and in with my necessary diabetic supplies. Here's what I need to do to prepare and what I'm taking with me:

Hard candies, glucose tablets for low blood sugar treatment

Snacks that include fruit, cheese or peanut butter crackers

Blood sugar testing supplies (strips, meter, etc.)

Diabetes Identification

My physician's phone number

My insurance card

Medicines I take for diabetes (insulin, pills)

Other medications I take

Injection supplies (alcohol swabs, needles)

Glucagon kit (If you're a type 1 diabetic)

Ketone-testing supplies (If you're a type 1 diabetic)

A note from my physician explaining I have diabetes and I must have these supplies and medicines, especially if I'm going out of the country

I'm taking along my prescriptions for my medications (syringes if you use them)

I'll call the airline in advance to get specific instructions about bringing my diabetic supplies onto the plane

Place my snacks and diabetic supplies in an insulated carrier to keep them cool

Take twice as many diabetes supplies just in case I run into problems with not being able to locate a pharmacy right away, or my trip is delayed and especially if I'm traveling out of the country

If I can't speak the language of where I'm going, then at least know how to ask for my diabetic supplies and for medical aid in the language

Well, I think that about covers it. I know it's extra planning that I didn't have to do before, but now that I've got this done, I'm off to enjoy my trip just as I have many times before

Kaiyle, You forgot the room in the carry-on for the medical supplies…put that cute outfit back in and make 1 pr of shoes work! LOL And, Ray T, condoms fall under "hygiene"…you bad boy, you!

LOL…That's right. Let's see, Harlen ships his supplies and the extra supplies I've got in the suitcase can fit right there in my insulated carry on bag. Yay!!! I didn't have to sacrifice neither style nor health afterall. Oh and Ray…LOL

I ship a lot of the things that will not fit UPS and its there when I get there lol
every time I am going some where that I am going to be for a week or so I just ship it Saves me a lot of stress and time.
Have fun
Best wishes

Harlen that's a brilliant idea. Which means you get to stuff that extra outfit in your suitcase…lol

Wishing you the best,

Harlen, how long does it take to ship, and what kind of costs? It sure beats the $25 checked baggage cost or $50 over-weight! Has your package ever been lost? I would hate to ship the clothes for the wedding and not have it arrive in time! And, if I am in 1 city, and fly to the next, might not work well, but could ship things home instead…need to think on this. When is the next trip out this way??? Hugs

Alright so the clown is coming out … you have cute outfits and shoes but I didn't see you mentioning condoms. What's up with that? (pardon the pun) ;)

Thanks Betty. As much as things have changed in my life, they are changes for the better!!! So I will do the extra work to have the same good times I had before this disease.

I couldn't agree more. I am with you, I look at the positives in the changes I have made. It isn't always easy but I plan on keeping my limbs and my sight so I can hold a grandchild one day and look upon my gardens when I am older. This is a great checklist.

Kaiyle 2010-08-13 17:25:21 -0500 Report

Amen to that Betty!!! I've got to keep this body together because I faithfully await God's gift of marriage. What a blessing it will be to share my life with a God-fearing husband and to hear the sweet voices of at least two children calling me mama. : )
