Hi, I am a doctoral student at the School of Information, University of Michigan. I am doing a research on how to better design online health communities in supporting individual differences and emerging problems. I am currently at the exploratory stage of trying to understand one's diabetes management experiences over time, more specifically in terms of personalizing the management strategies that fit best for you.

Have you experienced any diabetes related problems, solutions, or management strategies that are personalized or unique for yourself?

Were you still able to get help from people in DC on this? If so, what help was useful to you?

I can tell you the worst for me was when I was first diagnosed, I went blurry & my sugar was 550 they wanted me in the hospital that night but I couldn't go I had relatives coming in & I had to pick them up at the airport. The doctor tried to scare me to go to the hospital telling me, I could go into a coma, I could be dead that night. but when I couldn't go in, his attitude changed & he said "don't eat anything white". What horrible advice, then He said I need to get into diabetes classes, they were booked & hte next class was in 3 weeks. So how can I go from dead overnight to classes in 3 weeks.

A good booklet for newbies like me would have been alot more helpful than the junk I was told. Plus the classes was where I was to get a glucose meter, so I had no idea where I was. fortunately my mom had a old meter with extra strips, so I used that.

I never did understand why He didn't just give me insulin & get me out of the 550 & get my eyesight back.

the best advice I was told was to choose the carb first (my insurance company sent me a dvd which was better than the doctors info. ) by choosing either bread, or dessert, or potato, or pasta, I knew the rest had to be protein or a veggie.

We went out for breakfast once & I looked on the menu & one of the things was a fruit yogert, pancakes, juice. after learning about the carbs, I knew I couldn't eat that, way too much carbs & sugar.

Its' made my life easier
