The Complete Guide to Herbal Medicines; The New Healing Herbs;Herbal Medicine The Natural way to get well and stay well;Natural Healing with Herbs;Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs; The Healing Herbs The Ultimate Guide to the Curative Power of Nature's Medicines; The pleasure of Herbs; The Complete Book of Herbs; The Macmillan Treasury of Herbs;Herb Drying Handbook;Herbal Treasures; I also have 2 other books but they are called 1,801 Home Remedies and Natural Home Remedies. Most of these I've had for over 15 years.
They have helped me over the years before I try anything I read all I can find out about it. If I can hellp one person it will be worth putting them on here and getting cramps in my fingers.

If you're looking to make your own preparations vs just learning about what does what, "THE HERBAL MEDICINE-MAKERS HANDBOOK" is excellent. He goes over all types of preparation and why certain ones should bes used for certain herbs. Another neat thing, at nobody knows why, but it is very well known around the herbal remedies community, is that is you prepare a tincture of an herb on the full moon, it is stronger than if you mad it at any other time. Sounds hokey I know, but several :"experts" have written to that fact and they have testing to prove it. They're trying to find out why so hopefully. they can make all their tinctures stronger without waiting for the cycle of the moon.
Get the book…

The cycle of the Full Moon is the Strongest time of our Moon cycles so it just stands to reason that anything made or done on the Full Moon would work better than at any other time of the Month. I'm a firm believer in the moon cycles and do my most successful creations at that time. I will get the Book thankyou for the suggesttion.

ahhhh..so you have first hand knowledge of that "full moon" theory. i guess it's not a theory but a real thing. Hmmmmm…very interesting

let me know how you like the book

Yes just recently I have gotten back into my Bible reading and following what our Lord says. I strayed for over 3 years and was into something that helped me with my Diabetes and other things not so good for me. That is how I learned about the Moon Cycles and did very well following them and doing what I do best. That is also when I really got into Herbs. I might check into a class on Herbal Medicine too. Let me know if I can help in any way, even for moral support as you learn.
Your friend Edie.

I have a small collection of herb books. What I need to know is where to get the seeds or plants of my own to grow.

Ryan 2008-09-11 04:19:07 -0500 Report

horizonherbs.com or companionplants.com both have excellent selections of herbs of all types normal to exotic. companion plants even sells the herb seedlings if you get them at the right time of year. Where I live, there is no "time of year" so no problem here except it may be to hot

Edie 2008-09-21 11:08:44 -0500 Report

Could you enclude a list of your Herb Books for us at least those not on my list please and thankyou.

Ryan 2008-09-06 00:08:25 -0500 Report

I too have an extensive collection of books on herbs and natural medicine(50+) from the general to very specific types (TCM ,Ayruvedic, etc). Also tons of books on diabetes and herbal treatments specifically for diabetes. Just look for herbal books on amazon.com and the top 50-60 i got em, except for that 200 dollar book. Herbal medicine has become a real passion for me and it definitely does work for those unbelievers. Think of where many of our "medicines" come from. The only book I do not have is one specializing on rainforest herbs so if anyone has any info on good book, please let me know. I have sever sources for almost every herb in the world but only 1 or 2 for rainforest herbs. I was seriously thinking of moving to South america for a year or so to learn about them, but have no idea on how to even begin doing so. I;ve heard of people living with some native communities and learning from their "shaman or medicine man", like in Shipibo(sp) village.
It is all so interesting and I put everything I learninto practice. I have brought by BS levels down from possibly deadly levels to a 95-105 or so fasting and 110-120 give or take after meals. All through herbs, natural medicine and nutrition with no medication. I did take medication at first when my bs levels were in the 650's, but the side effects made me tell my Dr. i wanted off. Well he wasn;t really for it but he is very open to other treatments. He is a D.O, so has slightly different training than a regular MD so i told him my plan and he said to test A LOT like 10 times a day. very expensive I know. But it's been worth it. NOe I feel like I may soon be able to slowly cut down the times I test because u think I have an excellent herbal "formula" down, tailored to me specifically.
Gosh, I would get sore fingers if I had to type all the books I have but believe me, if you see it on Amazon, I probably own it. If anyone has any ???'s please don't hesitate to ask, I have helped several family members with diabetes, gout and shingles with herbs and all their problems went away, well the diabetics, still have to take their herbs but the other 2 only need to do so if they have a flareup! It's become almost like my personal mission to help educate people about the power and healing ability of these herbs. I do talk about them any chance I get when someone at home is ailing from something, and I do give them something from my "pharmacy" to help them out and f they followmy directions, they're doing good. Only problem is with the older generation who "bah humbugs" what I try to teach them. They think their arthritis meds are so good but still they're hobbling around. If the would just give it a chance, I know I can help them…oh well.

Anyway…enough for now,

I'll start writing the titles down slowly over the next few days and I have to remember, also which books are lent out and to whom. Right now, around 20% of my collection is on loan, so I really need to remember who I let borrow my books or I may never get them back and some of those books were really expensive like 80 bucks or so. Yikes…Should've wrote my name on it like on my BVD's

I am really interested in all this…

Ryan 2008-09-06 13:32:07 -0500 Report

Of course you are cause it's soooooooo interesting. Once you start, oh boy! I'm so interested in all of this I'm thinking of taking a herbalist class from Clayton college of natural health or global college of natural health. Just the cost is holding me back. It's not too much but for me, any additional costs I have to pay is too much. Oh well, I'll stick with what I got so far. I either could have a bunch of extra money, but that would mean taking Rx drugs and since the copays are 2.25 and 5.60, it would be soo much easier and cheaper to go that way, but going through that for a while really turned me off of conventional medicine and on to herbal/natural medicine but it does cost a lot more, especially the reading material, must be at least a thousand or 2 worth of books on the subject. But to me, staying off those drugs is worth the extra price. I just don't have that much extra to live off of. Maybe, I'll find me a nice rich lady to marry…haha…yeah right.

Edie 2008-09-06 13:43:44 -0500 Report

Money isn't everything. Love and Friendship is worth more to me. But it does take money to live what a shame.

Ryan 2008-09-06 21:28:50 -0500 Report

Yes, you're absolutely correct. I would be nowhere without my family and friends but the truth is, unfortunately, with my income i'm barely getting by. I did not mean to offend you or anyone else. I am sorry if it sounded like money was so important to me, because it is definitely not that important at all. I didn't mean for it to sound like that at all. It's just there are so many more positive things I could do for my health if I had just a little more and having someone to turn to whenever you need to is priceless. I don't know if I mentioned this before but my wife recently ran off with some other guy cause she couldn't handle me being so sick all the time. I just recently got the divorce papers served to me. So what I said is partially true, I wish I did have a wife to turn to when times get tough as they so often do. I still am getting over the shock of her picking up and leaving. And the money part, it was meant to be a joke which is why i said haha…yeah right. Again, I am sorry if I offended you in any way by what i said, and if it bothers you so much, i will remove that part of the post . I really apologize for that comment.

Leave it there. I know people say things when they are hurt. And I understand about a spouse leaving and going with someone else. My oldest Daughter's Husband did that just after her Son was born. I beleive he was seeing our Park Manager before he moved in with her and my Daughter is still upset 2 years later. She was going with another man and when he found out she was Pregnant has left her also. She says there are not any more decent men out there. She just hasn't waited for the right one to come along for her. She now has Mikey who was 3 on Aug. 5, and Angel who turned 3 months on Sept. 11th. I will be adding their picture shortly so everyone can see them. I have 5 Granddaughters and 5 Grandsons they are all very beautiful to me. I get to see 2 of them in the park more now that their dad is working out of the area for awhile. He told my youngest Daughter to choose her family or him. She does as he wants when he is around but comes over when she can get away with it not good for the Children hopefully she learns that soon.

Hey Edie,
Would you post them in the book section? Then other people can order them, and review them too. I am very interested in them. I just ordered my first the other day...the Green Pharmacy. I have not received it yet, but I can't wait.

Edie 2008-09-05 12:57:34 -0500 Report

I don't have that one but it sounds good. Let me know if you like it. Thanks I will post them for everyone else.

I got it today and it is really neat. It lists an infirmaty and then the ingredients you can use to help it, and how to mix or prepare them for that specific ailement. It also throws in some recipies. Definately a good reference book.
