Hi there. :)

I'm Flav and I've been diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic since the last week of April 2010. The nurse told me in the emergency room (I know, what a place to tell you!) The reason why I was in the ER was because I developed a nasty infection on the back of my head which required surgery. So with the looming knowledge of having an emergency surgical cut done and now diabetes, I basically hyperventilated and made matters worse.

Eventually, the initial shock subsided while I was recovering at the hospital and had help dealing with diabetes through my educator. She suggested that I should find a community because sometimes I would go into bouts of depression. I felt like there was something wrong with me because I just HAD to have diabetes. I felt alone.

My friends and family have been supportive, but I feel like I need more. In other words, I need to meet people like me.

And this is where this site comes in. I forgot how I stumbled on here, but I feel better knowing there are people out there that can help me and maybe I can help them in return. :)

Sorry for the novella. LOL.

How are you doing with the recovery from the surgery? This place has been my source for education, information, motivation, inspiration and so much more. It's hard to believe that I have only been on this site for five months because some of my friendships feel like life-long friends. You will find so much here in addition to the discussions… the product reviews, book club reviews, recipes and other areas of the site will help so much as you go from new-bee to do-bee in better caring for your mind, body and soul. We're here for you and, yes, we do understand all of the feelings, fears, and frustrations. If I can help in any way, click on the ugly photo and send a friend request. I don't have all of the answers but I'll certainly listen and make you laugh.

Well, the ER cut was just to release the head pressure. :/ I had the major surgery the next day. But to save folks from the gory details, the wound on the back of my head is fully sealed and I'm back to my usual self.

Thank you!

Hi Flav,
Welcome home.

You certainly came to the right place. Both for support and information. We even have a discussion page where you can give and receive all the cyber hugs you need. There's a therapist who volunteers his time here and if you can catch him, he's very good to talk to. But basically, you found a community of people with hundreds of years' combined experience in dealing with diabetes. Many of us were diagnosed before there was an internet so we had to learn it the hard way so now we're here to try and make it easier on the newer people. Look around, ask questions, and make yourself at home. You are very welcome here.
