I have been very careful after watching what diabetes did to my father. When the phone rang today and my doctor's nurse told me that I have diabetes all I could think was I knew it. After taking care of him and my mother for the last 7 to 8 years of their lives I know what I have to watch for and what not to eat. What I still can not adjust to is the fact that even though I did everything to avoid becoming diabetic, I am. At least I have one thing on my side I never was a big sweet eater so I will not have that hurdle to get over and I also know how important it is to care of my feet and to eat right. Still have to say it is a whole different ball of wax when your the one who is diagonsed.

I have come to this understanding in my mind: I can not change what is happening to my body, but I can fight it all the way. I will not let Diabetes control me I am going to control it. I know its going to be a bitter fight between the two of us but I am not going to lay down and let it win.
I am also going to use my affection as a tool to teach my daughter how to eat right so if some day she inherits this ( God Forbid )she will at least be one step ahead of me. Now I just wish she could give me some the energy she has. lol

You can still have pasta, try a low carbohydrate pasta.
My favorites are tri-color pastas.

I have been looking into the different pastas and trying to find the right kinds of grain for my breads and such. I love to make home made foods and my brothers are bummed, because they know when I start changing foods they are going to be stuck tihe it as well. They live with me and already complain because I rarley( if ever) fry foods, but when I take the potatoes and gravy off the table they are going to have cows.

I feel I have to explain a bit here. Do the auto parts factories closing down here it put my brothers out of jobs. I could not let them live on the streets or in shelters. I was raised family came first and me being the older sister, when mom passed away I became the mother hen.

No explanation needed, my "Interesting" statement was directed at your love for making home made foods and trying to find the right grains for your breads and such.
I love to cook, and I love it when others feel the same way !

Cooking is my way off letting stress go. Nothing like kneading a ball of dough or whipping up eggs to get things worked out. lol

Sweet eater or not if you're a carb girl it can be just as bad!

Echoing Harlen it's not your fault either…at first I did a lot of self-blaming and feeling sorry for myself bc I thought it was all my fault. It was more a when not if in my family really.

Educate yourself as much as possible and get your doctor appointments in order and you'll be on a good track.

There's hope to control the numbers which is half of the battle. Whether diabetic or not the healthiest diet for anyone is the one you are about to embark on. You don't have to give up anything… you just have to use portion control, weight control, emotional control, get more sleep, get more water and you can still live a long and happy life without complications. We are all here for you and welcome you to our little community. It is good that you have more education than alot of us have gotten with our diagnoses. Please let me know if there's anything that I can do or say to help you. Here on DC, we all work together with the support, encouragement and motivation. As a disease there was nothing you could do not to become diabetic. Family history plays into it alot. Some things you can change… some things you cannot.
