My teenage son was diagnosed with diabetes last week. His endocrinologist told him to exercise, diet, and lose weight. She gave him a blood test gadget and showed us how to use it. She also wants him to see a cardiologist, eye doctor, and see her again next week.

He's eating much better but he won't do anything physically active. He's also self conscious.

I'd like to find a diabetes support group for people his age in our city so he won't feel so alone. I was looking for one when I found this sight.

Here is a great site on juvenile diabetes
He is just starting out and while you do want to nip some things in the bud, you will need to find ways to introduce others. Remember, he is the one who has it, and I rather imagine he is rather overwhelmed with it all. Patience is going to need to be used. Specially as a teen, as of course ALL adults are stupid. LOL

There are several folks here who have diabetic kids, so you will get a lot of help and advice. I know it sounds weird, but try to make it a family event. Don't single out his diet or his activities. Do them as a family. You will all feel better for it as well.

best of luck with this battle. it's incredibly important to make sure your son maintains a healthy weight — see if he'd like to join a sports team or any new activity that he would like. there should be a lot out there — especially since it's summer! hiking, kayaking, swimming, etc
if he isn't too old, maybe consider summer camps
