The reason we ask about what type you are is because it will determine what kind of answers we offer. Some things are very similar, but they ultimately are different and advice that could work for a type 2 could cause big issues for a type 1. That's all.

Sugar is a rather pure form of glucose and gets into your blood stream very quickly and can often cause spikes or prevent lows. Really, that is the main reason most of us avoid it. As long as you are accounting for the carbs in the sugar that you consume, you can treat for it. However. It is an empty carb, meaning that it offers glucose but not much more. A carb that has fiber in it, or is from a whole food is much more useful to your body than sugar.

I don't use artificial sweeteners in my foods, so sometimes I still use sugar. I usually use stevia, but if I do use sugar I use raw or less processed versions such as dark brown. Those are a little better, but only marginally. The best option is learning to eat many of your foods without the added sweet of anything. That will help you curb the cravings for sugar and helps a lot with keeping on track.

I agree with Gabby, she knows her stuff!!! I also try not to use the artificial sweeteners and use stevia and agave sometimes… I've found that it takes me about three days to lose that taste for sweets, when I fall off the wagon…

I do use splenda in my food. I have found when I use that I do not realy get tempted to go and buy a cake or other sweet junk food. I like real sweet tea so by using splenda intead of sugar I can still get my sweet treat. I know many says that you should not sweeten your stuff. But I still think it is better to use use some kind of sweetner intead of sugar.

Try Stevia and stevia products. I think you will find they are quite good and don't add those nasty chemicals to your system. The cost about the same, so you won't loose anything by trying them out.
