Does your child hide his/her diabetes from friends?

So, recently my son went on a three day camp out with our church. A few days before the camp a member of the medical staff called me to find out about his diabetes. She was very careful to ask her daughter, who is a good friend of my son, to leave the room so she wouldn't find out about his diabetes. I thanked her for doing that but said it was not a big deal and I was pretty sure her daughter probably already knew he had it. She said that all the other diabetics that were attending the camp (about 4 or 5) absolutely did not want anyone to know about their disease. That really surprised me. My son just doesn't make a big deal out of it—but he doesn't hide it either. He doesn't want to be known as "Josh the Diabetic" or anything but he is not embarrassed about it either. So, how do your teens handle friends knowing about their diabetes? I'm just really curious.

I'm a teenage diabetic going to school so I can relate. I have only told 3 people. But now the school knows and I get made fun of they don't know younger people can get it. It really depends what kind of neiborhood your at 4 if u get made fun of.

I know kids can be pretty ruthless when it comes to differences in others. I don't have kids, but I remember how I was treated. It sticks with you, so I guess I can kind of understand the secrecy of it with teens.
