I want to share something that has upset me for a year now because perhaps there are others of you out there that are suffering in silence as I have done for much too long.

This involves body odor but not the type we normally think of when we say those words.

This odor is something I could NOT figure out and even while IN THE SHOWER, I swear i could smell it. It seemed to come out every pore no matter what I ate or drank.

My thoughts were perhaps my medication…but when I put out feelers, no one replied so I thought well IF anyone else has this issue they are not sharing and that is nor normal for this site.

My ONE common denominator since being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes last July has been my food. I began a very healthy regiment that consists of mainly chicken and perhaps at times shrimp and ALWAYS veggies. The ONE LINK with these things is MRS DASH

MRS DASH makes everything taste amazing at least to me and it meant having a wonderful blend of spices that were often enough to know they are fairly fresh. My favorite is the Italian blend of the table blend. It goes on EVERYTHING…

Well, bottom line is that I stopped using it and for the first time…the odor disappeared. It took a few days but it REALLY disappeared. Prior to this it was not only on my skin but also in my urine. Sorry to be so blunt but it is what it is…

Now I use fresh herbs or individual like the old days. Sorry Mrs. Dash but whatever else is in your product is making me stinky.

Anyway, I want to share this just in case there are others out there who need to know. I have NO DOUBT that I found the culprit because nothing else has changed in my diet.

Thi is so weird that a seasoning could have effect on a person. It could happen. . Its like when a person likes a certain fragrance and how it smells different on each person. My stepdad loved Polo and so did I until he wore it. It made me sick everytime I smelt it on him. I didn't get sick when someone else wore it. So weird how body chemistry is different with each person. Well enough rambling. Everyone have a blessed day!

Danielle jayabee52 is right about how we are all different. Obviously we all have different body chemistry somewhat. I used Mrs Dash prior to having diabetes and did not have the issue. Then again it may have been the blend of Mrs Dash as there are so many these days. I am very sure however that this is what caused it because when I stopped so did the scent. It did not go away in a day…FYI… It use to really upset me because as I lathered in the shower with this wonderful body gel I could STILL smell it. It was from my pores not urine. I know what different veggies etc do to that end of things. This was new and different. I prefer fresh anyway and this just makes me that much stronger on using those instead.

I use Mrs. Dash, but not on a daily basis. I didn't get any kind of body odor, however, the combination of medications & the spices we eat can contribute to this as well. Especially in the urine. Thanks for sharing, that's always good to know.

Howdy Danielle WELCOME to DiabeticConnect!

One of the things about people with diabetes (PWDs) or people in general for that matter, is we all react differently to different inputs. So what may affect you may NOT affect her and vice-versa.

Blessings to you and yours.

I am glad you narrowed it down. Besides fresh herbs are better tasting and better for your health. Everyone has diffrent reactions to diffrent things. I had the odor problem when i was using fish oil capsels. I do not use it anymore. But now my problem is I am constantly getting bacterial infections. It is what it is. Have a good life and keep healthy.

Dawn I am sorry to hear about the odor but glad to hear you discovered what was causing it. I do have to agree that other chemicals they may add could be the reason it did that to you. There are other seasonings that can be used that don't have all those chemicals. Organic stores sale seasonings that have no addatives in them.

I use fresh now or certain ones I had always used. It would have been nice to use something that tasted good and was so simple but… I have no doubt what it was because when I stopped using it, it stopped. It took awhile to realize something so simple was causing it. Being Italian I love my herbs and spices and being diabetic we need them more to have flavor in our food. Thanks margokittycat…love the name FYI

SaraF, try the no Mrs Dash…you can use fresh or other herbs as I think it is something else in there whether preservative or whatever. Good luck hon. You are not alone out here with diabetes. My doc ignored me until I forced him to give an A1C test then he apologized. I could not stay awake, couldn't stop drinking or going to the bathroom and had begun to have abdominal pain. He still was not listening. He listens now…we all know our bodies better than anyone and need to take control. Sara, call the American Diabetes Association. they sent me awesome info in books and a CD…the more you know the less scary it is. They also tell you how to simply follow a diabetic diet. It is not rocket science with the way they teach. Also, call your local hospital and see if there is a class somewhere or support group. I was terrified but found out how simple it can be. Within two months I had dropped weight, BS count and was feeling sooooooooo much better. It was not hard (I am lazy LOL) I love to swim, do you like to walk or anything like that? Cook your own food don't buy frozen and processed…they are a killer. READ labels…remember CARBS are as bad as sugar on a label. Try DreamFields pasta if you like pasta..mmmm

The trouble is I am financially in a bad place. I cannot afford fresh fruit and vegetables all the time. But I do not buy meat anymore. But I like to make my own nut butter and eggs are good for the protein as well.
Not buying meat makes it possible to get fresh veg more often.

FYI Dr. Oz said a second choice over fresh veggies is frozen not canned…you CAN do it and do it without skipping other food. Do you have an ALDI store near you? I know they are not in all parts of the country yet BUT if you do. That is how I lived on healthy things while on food stamps…also WalMart veggies are much much cheaper than any grocery store around me WalMart is coming out with stores that are JUST grocery stores now. I have a few in my area and the veggies are incredible. Asparagus was $1.14 yesterday and in the grocery store it is close to $3.

FLDawn 2011-09-09 19:40:46 -0500 Report

I had zero income when diagnosed as a diabetic. I was waiting for my disability hearing. I managed with food stamps and am the only one in the home. You can do it. Dream Fields pasta is often 3 boxes for five dollars…I buy frozen broccoli etc because I like it better and it keeps…I also buy frozen veggies without junk added to them. I use store brand items when possible. Trust me…YOU CAN manage. Know how to shop and buy seasonal like good Chefs do…that is how you keep food cost down. Use a little of the pasta to supplement your veggies and splurge on a small bottle of olive oil…not junk oil also, grape seed oil is good for you and cheaper. Just by changing how I ate I not only saved money but lowered my BS from 7.8 to 7.2 less than 2 months after being diagnosed along with swimming. I can't walk much because of my disability and need to lose weight so I can get off my meds. My doc is not one who feels you must be on them forever…that is for type 2 FYI… I have also lowered my cholesterol from 260 to 160 in less than a year. Not a record but I am happy. Don't say you can't…you pay more for packaged stuff than you realize.

Hi FLDawn, since I am Native American Indian, I don't usually sweat like everyone else does. However, I noticed that since being diagnosed with type 2, I have been sweating a lot, and I mean pouring. I also noticed that my sweat stinks really bad. I thought it was just me and that my deodorant wasn't working. Now I know it isn't just me. I use Mrs. Dash and maybe that is the problem. I will try eliminating it to see if it has any effect. Thanks for the post.

Hi Jim, LOL yep hard to describe but it is only female parts LOL… definitely a sugar issue.

Jim, I normally do not sweat either…here I am in FL and normally I am as dry as can be no matter how high the humidity or temp. This is actually a negative at times as I can be in the heat for too long and suffer the consequences due to this. NOW since the diabetes a couple of years ago it is all different. I break out in cold sweats, hot sweats, sweat sweat…especially if my sugar is LOW. If I misbehave I pay for it and the price is too high. I especially sweat from my hairline…all so new and weird.

I am on Metformin and honestly have not had the dark urine issue unless I am not drinking enough water. I am a big water drinker but if I am out running around etc. and don't keep up…it is dark. Keep an eye on that OK and drink lots of water. Mine is almost clear. LOL oh what a conversation to have but we are all in the same boat here. If we don't communicate then how will we help someone else not be afraid?

As far as giving Mrs D another chance…nope.. been there done that definitely her. No issue since. I use herbs but use fresh or ones I have always used. I keep it simple and like things like dill, rosemary, red and black peppers and a little oregano. Works for me… I love asparagus and won't give that up LOL…live alone so only I am offended in the house…the cats can't complain with their litter box issues at times ha ha

I was only on Metformin for 3 months, but after about 2 or so, I had that neon yellow urine color, very light, but bright, strange. So I went to the doctor for a test, they determined it must have been the metformin and I drank lots of water everyday too. So if you have this, and you are on it, that is what it is. I was surprised they apparently had not seen other diabetics on Metformin, with this too.

I bet you had fun trying to dance over your words and be sensitive and get your point across at the same time! What we eat and drink can cause odors. Not just in out "outputs", but also through our skin. I know Metformin makes my urine dark yellow and it stinks, then again, so does asparagus! Now, to make your Mrs. Dash's study complete, you need to go back on it and see if the odor returns. After all, it is only fair to give her a second chance! Then look to see if see posts the ingredients on the label. I think they have different "flavors" and maybe it is only one ingredient in one of the flavors.

I agree janfran that foods do strange things to you. Asparagus and garlic are two that comes immediately to mind. I too cook fresh most of the time. I have NOT had issues other than natural ones with fresh items since I stopped Mrs Dash and have no doubt that this was the culprit.

As far as high BS, I tend to run low rather than anything and have brought my BS down to 7.2 which although not normal, is decent. IF I cheat, my body tells me by itching and keeping me in the bathroom. I seem to have a textbook body for BS with low making me sweat and do all the things you should not have happen when you don't do right with your diet by skipping meals etc. The high…well I feel like garbage so am not cheating anyone but me and looking for bad things to happen. The way I feel instantly reminds me though that it is just not worth the cheating. I am not saying I don't once in awhile but after I do…I don't want to again for awhile LOL

I don't know about men and even my female friends out here but without details I will say that my ummmm body parts tend to get an itch and that is the first sign before anything that I was BAD…

I started a discussion quite a while back , I titled it has anybody heard of this. It was about a scent or smell problem that I was having. I found out from my doctor that he called it phantom scent, or phantom odor. He said that it is a common problem in this area where I live. I sense it the worse when my bs changes, like spikes etc. But he said it wasn't an outward odor, and no one else could smell it. Sometimes I even get up in the middle of the night and take another shower with lavender to get rid of the smell, but it only seems to a little. He also said that some animals are sensitive to it and that is how they train dogs to assist diabetics. And my dog has be very attentive when I start geting the scent problem. He has even woke me up in the middle of the night when my bs was bad low a couple of times.
I hope this is not the same as yours and that you have been able to eliminate your scent problem. I will take a look at some of the herbs etc that I am cooking with. I do use Ms Dash on occasion. Of course I am moving soon and hopfully that will help me also. Thank you for sharing and I will experiment with the herb changes.

Thanks Trudie Ann, I appreciate all feedback. I do believe there are things that humans may not notice just as there are things that we KNOW that cannot be explained such as when we are going to die…Mom told me the night before even though her CCU nurses said she was fine and her vitals were better than mine. She DID leave the next day by the way. They have dogs that can sense cancer as well. I know right away when my BS is low or heading there because I will break into a sweat yet be able to feel the a/c around me. It is almost like having chills when you have a fever only without the shaking. I will seriously pour sweat off my head area even though I normally do NOT sweat. I hope that moving will cure your issues. Stopping Mrs. Dash and also being careful of adding other things to my food has helped me. I no longer have the odor since I stopped using Mrs Dash…I wonder what else is in that mix that we do not know about? I have gotten to a point since no longer doing processed foods to where I want FRESH and want to know everything that is in my food. Of course as long as they genetically play with seeds etc. we will never know completely but we can be careful as to what we ourselves add.Good luck with your move. I don't think Mrs. Dash has any salt in it. That's why I started using it to begin with after I had my strokes. They taught us to cook with Mrs. Dash in the Rehabilitation Clinic where I recovered after 2 strokes at the age of 45 - I am 49 now. And what are Nature Seasonings? Any special place to get them? What is your secrest homemade seasoning - need some ideas! Also, I noticed a weird smell also, but it was only when my blood sugar was way too high and it was almost like a sweet odor that was sickening. When I sweat the smell comes thru stronger than usual but I have never noticed it with using Mrs Dash and i have been using it 4 years. So you might notice a correlation in how high your blood sugar is when you have that odor especially if it's a bit sweet. It is nauseating and the only real cure is to keep your blood sugar down. I have a very hard time doing that with how high mine is

Hi, for me it was on my forearm etc. Not specific to underarm because except with low BS I tend not to sweat which is not good as we all know.

I would do as I did and think about things as a common denominator and if the smell is very strong think about what you ate. It could also be meds because I know certain cold meds even make an odd odor but we don't take those all of the time. It is frustrating I know. Good luck.

I can't use Mrs Dash either I found it made my kids stink…I have found another company that is like Mrs Dash uses different bends and does not cause the body order and it's even cheaper…McCormick perfect pinch they have salt free and the regular that is still not high in sodium..My company never notices the change and I get more comments on my food now that I use it.

Thank you for sharing this because it shows us that it is not our meds making this happen. I have gone to using my own spices and fresh herbs when possible and no longer use Mrs. Dash. After a few weeks the odor went away and I am happy to say it stayed away. What was odd was that I could smell it even in the shower while soaping myself. I have not used salt in over 30 years and don't like it or miss it.

Hi, I use Mrs. Dash but not a lot, I noticed an after taste, it is delicious on potatoes but I too stopped taking it. Unfortunate for me I use a lot of garlic and at times people tell me I smell of garlic my pores and breath! oh well, I say I have to have my garlic on everything.

I make a Garlic sauce with oregano, oil and vinegar and eat it on everything. I don't care, I love my garlic. :~)

Glad you found out and now know what it was. That it was nothing coming from you being ill.

God Bless!

I love garlic too but just try to have it when I know I am not going with a group of people LOL. It does reek from our pores but ohhhh it is so good. I love the garlic sauce you mentioned. Very simple but sounds good. I am Italian and grew up with garlic so you know I am not giving it up LOL

I don't seem to have any problems with smells. Hubby says I don't stink! I have used Mrs Dash for years and still do. I even use garlic a lot in cooking. I grow my own herbs and even freeze them for use in winter. High blood pressure meds have both of us totally off table salt.

Greg, I was fine when I stopped using it. Yup, I am spicing myself now and using fresh when I can. After I move next month I intend to have a little herb garden in little pots just for me :-) Thanks for sharing, at least now I know I am not alone.

My husband lovs to cook. He makes up sveral different spice blends. There are few spices and herbs in Mrs Dash that we don't like. There are a few other spices that give me flu likesymptoms, mace and nutmeg esp. So making our own blends is easier.

Cumin gets me, just a little bit and all I can smell is stale persperation. My husband says I don't stink. No one else has ever said I smell from it. Cumin has done this to me for 30 years.
For some people asparagus is a problem. I did research on that. Some people have a really strong body odor or urine smells foul after eating asparagus. Some people can smell the odor and some people don't. Very strange.

Hi
Veggies I get and I know that asparagus especially is a strong one. It makes me think the cat litter is dirty but it is not if you get my drift. If it is natural it also will go away when it is out of your system. That was the problem with Mrs. Dash, I found it took weeks to really stop the odor. This was something that I could even smell while soaping in the shower and we know that is not normal. All I can say is I am so glad it is gone.

I notice it more in my mouth than my body, but diabetes does produce a smell. I think we are so busy and not paying attention that we don't notice it unless you are trained to tell. I do know that herbs when eating in larger quantities can seep through the pores. I used to have a friend who ate raw garlic every day...whew...didn't like to be around him in close quarters.

Gabby, since stopping Mrs. Dash I am fine now so I have NO doubt it was that. Maybe it was the blend I used as they have several. All I know is it took a few weeks to eliminate the odor and it could be smelled even in the shower while soaping up. Natural foods we expect to smell a certain way but the small quantity that I was using just should NOT do this to people. If you read the other posts you will see I am not alone about Mrs. Dash. LOL I had a guy I worked with who put a clove of garlic in a Coconut Mounds bar a few times a day. He claimed he took it for his heart etc. Sad thing though, one night he died at the dinner table and his Son who was a paramedic could not save him. So I say use garlic if you love it, expect to be stinky but don't worry be happy LOL

I noticed that smell on diabetics that have struggled with it for many years and it is out of control and you can smell it on them. I noticed on my cousin who died recently he and his wife both died they were blind and lost some limbs, they did not get the proper care and did not want to stop eating the types of high starchy and sugar foods may they rest their souls in peace.

:~) God Bless

If they had lost limbs etc. I am not surprised there was odor. If their diet was not proper and they did not control their sugar I believe the same thing. My issue and that of others here seems to be something in the blend. All diabetics do not smell bad and since stopping Mrs. Dash I have no issues. They obviously were out of control in many ways and I am sorry to hear that. My friend buried her husband two years ago from the same things, first his vision then amputations of leg, foot etc. finally kidney and heart failure. Diabetes is very controllable but YOU are in control or it gets out of control. I was lucky and found out early and kicked my own butt both about diet and exercise. I want to LIVE

Hello Mays;
My husband and I have both noticed that we have this problem. I thought I had been using too much garlic on my food. (powder, salt, herb mix, spice mix, etc.)
My husband uses various homemade spice and herb combos when he cooks. He knows I love onions and garlic in almost all of my meals. (no to icecream or cereal.) OMG I just tasted that, without the food. I need to have my vivid imagination toned down a bit. It is just 'soooo greennnnnnn'. Time to check my BS.
Yup it is 289, time for a walk.
God bless

Garlic will absolutely do that to anyone…I am Italian and it is just a given that it comes out of your pores. At least it is natural…I just wonder what is in Mrs. Dash that so many of us have noticed this issue. I will stick to natural now.
