what can i do i try everything to lower my glucose, from dieting to insulin shots and my glucose won't go down

YOU HAVE TO EXERCISE EVERY DAY WITH type 2 diabetes…it is a must…
if that doesnt work than i have another choice for now…i am taking herbs from india…they are cheap…DIABET GUARD is the product…it is in a granules form. you can take it 1-2 times a day…it takes a least 6-8 months to take effect…like it did me…the web site is… takes at least 2-weeks to get this stuff from india…but well worth it…6 bottles is about 55 dollars…it is bitter but well worth it…it has about 16 herbs in it…
and will help your sugar levels get lower.

I second Elrond's comment about getting your carbs under control. It's not a diet. It's changing the way you think about food. Basically you should remember that most of those processed, sugary or starchy foods raise your blood sugar rapidly, causing it to spike. Your goal should be to keep your blood glucose level at a steady level in the normal range, and to minimize or entirely get rid of those spikes. In my opinion, the best way to do that is to limit your intake of processed, sugary, or starchy foods. Limit not only the kinds of foods you eat but also the amounts. Your blood sugar can still spike if you eat a whole pound of baby carrots at a sitting. Complex carbs are digested more slowly and allow you to maintain a more steady blood sugar level, but again, the amounts you eat are also going to have an effect.

My nurse practitioner has put me on a very low-carb, high-protein eating plan. Once I got past the initial sugar/starch cravings (the first week or two, maybe), things began to get easier. I've been eating this way since January 2010 and have lost 45 pounds so far. Better yet, my blood sugars have gotten to the normal range (my fasting blood sugar was 265 when I was first diagnosed a few years ago, and I couldn't seem to get it lower than about 150 on a regular basis when I was on the "diabetic diet" the hospital nutritionist and diabetes educator had taught me. I kept fudging with the carbs, either in the types of carbs I was eating or the amounts. This LCHP eating plan works for me when I stick to it, and my blood sugars stay in the normal range. I went on vacation and ate like everybody else for a week, and my blood sugars went up. Back home and back on the program for three days, and I'm back to normal. It's working for me.

Here's the key. Is the damage you are doing to your body worth that Twinkie/Mounds bar/piece of pie/etc.? From what I've read on this site and others, trying to compensate with insulin while continuing to eat those types of foods only ends up increasing your insulin resistance and doing further damage to your body. My toes are going numb, and as a medical transcriptionist I read/hear every day about diabetic patients dealing with the end results of their poor decisions and poor blood sugar control: Kidney disease leading to kidney failure, dialysis, and even death; diabetic retinopathy and vision damage or even blindness; gangrenous wounds, non-healing skin ulcers, infections, and even amputation due to circulation problems in their extremities; and heart disease (the relationship between heart disease and diabetes is complex, but the great majority of heart patients (treated by the cardiology groups for which I type) also have diabetes (mostly Type II). Many, of these patients are obese, but NOT ALL. They all struggle with controlling their diabetes.

We are all in this together. I didn't mean to write a book, and it looks like I've gone way past the initial question you asked. Hang in there! Think of food as fuel only, and try to think of your future health as you decide what and how much to put into your body. Talk to your doctor or nurse, and never give up on yourself.

I'm coming into this discussion very late but my diabetes was totally out of control for many years. Even though I tried all kinds of diets and actually lost weight to the point of being emaciated, my blood glucose remained in the 300's and 400's. Insulin was a mixed blessing because I was constantly over-controlling, dropping my sugar into the 'basement' then over-reacting to that and having my sugar even higher. I finally hooked up with an excellent endocrinologist who had me start counting carbohydrates. That was the magic bullet. And now that I'm using an insulin pump, my BG levels are nearly normal. My endo wants my levels a touch high due to my cardiac history but it's maintaing exactly where we want it. I rarely test over 200 and the lows are a thing of the past. I recommend that you get a good book on carb counting and get the carbs under control. An endocrinologist or certified diabetes educator will be a huge help.

A friend of ours was having trouble getting his BGs under control and finally got put on a pump and his got a lot better. All I know is talk to your doctor and see what he/she can help with. Sorry I don't have anything else to add as far as suggestions go. I did want to let you know though that if you need support I'm more than happy to do what I can there for you (and any one here for that matter).

have you tried taking chromium 200mg ? i have been taking that for 4 months now and my a1c is down to 7.2 and in oct , of last year it 14.9 plus my blood sugars have been running pretty to normal as well at 85 to 130

Some times the foods we eat contain sugar or sugar subsidies which are worst than sugar. Check statistics on what you are buying for sugar content etc.
I too am type 2 and have a thyroid condition for which I take Synthroid. I find that if I get stressed just before doing my finger prick my sugar goes up other than that I keep it at a pretty regular 75 to 105, sometimes lower. I was diagnosed with type 2 about 9 years ago.
Carbs, salt, sugar all of these play a high role in raising mdl. One can also take Levothyroxine in place of Synthroid even if you are diabetic.
Try extra veggies with dinner, they are filling and carbs are negligible also a salad (watch the dressing - which kind and how much). Beware of junk food. Luckily, I never really ate any of that.

Just FYI:
if you put the dressing into a small bowl ON THE SIDE, then dip the tines of your salad fork into the dressing before you dip into the salad, you will reduce your calories, etc. by bunches!
My neighbors son is an underwear model and he uses this trick. My CDE tried it and estimated a reduction of too many calories. Since I HATE ranch dressing, I may niot save that many calories, but I still get the dressing flavor!

I have been a type 2 diabetic with thyroid condition, as well. I had the same problem sugars going from 55 to 490 I found a endroconogolist (sp) diabetes dr and she ran tests and decided to try me on the insulin pump. AT first I was liery but decided what the heck. I only wish I would have had the knowledge about the pump all those years ago. I have been on it for about 3 months and it has made a drastic change in controlling my sugars. I used to always watch the sugar content I was eating when actually I should have been watching the CARBS. I am allowed a certain level of actual sugars as long as I calculate the carbs and set the pump to cover the number of carbs, for the correct amount of insulin to be injested. Plus, with the pump there is only 1 injection every 3 days instead of several a day. What a blessing this has been for me. Its not nearly as bad as it seems to have been said. I swear by it. Also, my dr is very strict with my thyroid meds, she orders BRAND name only, she says its a must in diabetes control.

I am surely no expert, being new to the community and being a prediabetic, but I am aiming to stay that way. I tried The 30 Day Diabetes Cure in which I changed the kinds of foods I eat, and have also read Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's book (DIABETES SOLUTION, A Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars) in which he said that not only do you have to watch WHAT you eat, but HOW MUCH. He says (he is a Type 1 diabetic, himself) that if you eat a big meal even of good things it will make your blood sugar go up. He and many others recommend smaller meals more often during the day. if i eat a big meal my sugar levels drop , i have a over active thyrod and a fast mebtablism , and if i eat smaller meals all day long my sugar shoot through the roof so see not every diabetic is the same plus i am a type 1 diabetic.

yep you have not only Balance your meals but also have a time line when you do eat or else you will pig out and eat too much. SO now you took your meds already and you ate a big meal. The meds are not going to work properly for you because over ate ( I used to do this when I was first Diagnosed with Diabetes

My blood sugars jumped around not matter what I did either. I am a Type 2 on insulin. I have had problems with my Thyroid. My doctor was hoping that my BG would lower once I was on meds fro Thyroid, but I still having problems. I am learning when you have a Thyroid problem, that I should eat about 8-9 grams of carbs a day. Less than what a diabetic eats in a morning meal. Have your doctor check your Thyroid. You may need to change doctors. I had a doctor who seemed to be afraid of my medication schedule and my sugars went crazy. I ended up calling him "chicken child" to his face. He then transfered me to someone else in the clinic. The new person took about 3 months but got all my dosing straightened out. My sugars are still a little high, but I blame part of that on heat stress (My AC quit the week it got up to 107).
Sometimes, the best you can do on your own is just not enough.
The only bad thing to all this is that I use a residency center and change doctors every 3 years (they graduate). This means I carry ALL my records with me. It's a gigantic stack, since diabetes is not my only medical challenge.
You will be OK. It just may take a little time and maybe some 'name-calling'.

My ex is on insulin and I am on pills. We can eat the same thing and his will skyrocket and mine will drop. Read an article years ago that if you found your TRUE genetic diet you would be healthier and lose weight. Thought it was funny until my ex and I started going out to eat together. We would eat pretty much the same thin g each time and got different sugar results. He can't touch pasta but I can pig out on it, his will raise and mine will drop. I can't eat meat (beef, pork) but he can. The only thing the two of us can eat is Veal. So now we are believers. What you do is try different foods tarditional to your background, all heredities not just the predominant ones. IE. I have Cherokee, German, French, English (mostlt, along with others) I can eat corn, Pastas, Fish etcto my hearts content but no the beef that is a large part of German and English diets. It really helped. He doesn't follow it anymore and he has progressed from diet to pills to insulin and more types of insulin with pills. Both of us are overweight so I really think it has a lot to do with our eating types. Can't hurt to give it a try. The key is to try the main traditional foods of your background.

Vhivas I understand your frustration. May I make the suggestion to re visit your doctor? I was seeing a GP for four years and tried every oral medication, diet, excercise and injections Lantas, Byetta, etc and finally insulin shots. Went for accupunture took cinnamon. It was to the point that I could see my doctors frustration ( nothing worse) She finally got me in to see a nurse Prac. at an endos' office and in my city there is only two. It was suggested that I go on an insulin pump after a series of blood work and fighting with the ins. company to cover wala! My numbers are stable I feel great! There was also things I learned how to better adjust after seeing a dietitian. The point is keep a journal of when your numbers are high and write down what you ate. Perhaps the carb count and portion sizes are off.

It will get better hang in.

You haven't told us exactly what you already do, or have tried, to lower your glucose. But as my own diabetic counselor keeps telling me…"consistancy", with eating, and times I eat, along of course with 'what' I eat, and proper portion controls. And the seasonings I use. As well as, "do I take my meds at a consistant time every day, and do I check my glucose at a consistant time every day".

Also remember that if your glucose ever fall too low, you might feel dizzy and weak. And if it ever climb abnormally high you might become confused or have breathing problems.

I believe you need to balance your meals and eat on a regular schedule. This will help the your body to maintain its blood glucose. Remember meals that combine starch and fiber with some protein and a little fat slow digestion so that glucose enters the blood gradually in an ongoing steady supply. hi,well my sugars have been up and down.i really try hard to watch and how much i eat(my age 69 and my health)i take actos and lantus at h.s.)and have been a diabetic since 2002.but again it runs in my family.i have always been thin but as i got ollder,i put on excess i'm fighting to keep my levels low,and also to loose weight.the doctor put me on lovasa,so i have to much fat in my blood.more chicken and more pork i'm looking for new recipes.and learning to like fish,tuna(yuk)but need to eat moreof and salmon,walnuts.but who can afford to eat,when prices are so high in the stores.for me sometimes fruit and fresh veggies but not to often.

For over a year my weight stayed too high. April my medical insurance dropped. I ran out of medications soon after, but kept testing; exercise and diet. Since then my tests have dropped for about 3 months, I have lost 35 pounds, but I worry all the time. This is not a recommended way to loose weight. The withdrawl from meds alone took me through hell. Not a good way to improve depression. Talk to your doctor about your concerns. Maybe he/she can recomend a nutrionist or diatition. Good luck and don't give up.

I have been on a specific health and wellness program in Central Maine. It is new to the market and is only just beginning to expand. It teaches how to control weight through food choices and anti-inflammatory foods. I was surprised by the foods that I thought were good for me (including some fruits and veggies) that just don't help in weight loss. This program is based on research and I have personally seen the results in myself and husband. If is especially good for folks with diabetes as it works through a low-glycemic index. Has anyone heard of Agave? I can't stand the man made sweeteners as they leave my tongue feeling fuzzy, but this is a natural product that has sweetened and has a low glycemic index. I know of several people who have been able to drop several, and some all of the meds they are on. if you are interested in more.
The low carbs for a time and the low sugars are key, also specifically chosen foods and personal coaching in low numbers.

Hi, have you tried cinnamon pills, may sound crazy , but my sugar had jumped to over 400 one day. My new grandaughter's Nurse had called ,as I was telling her my readings, she sent my daughter to local store for the pills,& told me to take two & drink a quart or more of water before she arrived 30 mins. later. within that time it had actually dropped in half, within a couple of hors it was back to normal.I am a true beleiver in these, because I will do whatever it takes to keep from going on medication or insulin, their in the vitamin section of the store. I promise I 've never been onr to join groups or chat etc, But these herbal pills I will give a testemony for. Good Luck, Memaw77

Hi all,

I am not new to diabetes but I am new to this site. I was diagnosed in 2005 with type 1 .

I have a very active and social lifestyle, I do not drink at all or smoke…I do more than 20 minutes of a workout every day. I am 43 and I play baseball..Bike ride, Run I play basketball in winter indoors too. I weigh 190 lbs and I am 6ft tall.

I take Metformin…2 pills twice a day which equals 2000
I also take Lantis. 40 before bed and 40 when I wake up.
I take Novolog before I eat according to what I eat.

My 14 day avg is …300
My Hem A1c is 10.1

Am I a responsible diabetic? I don't know…I am always so worried that numbers will go too low that I panic. I see it under 100 and I will drink a gallon of OJ.

Today I have to be honest…I have had it! This is ridiculous and I need to get a good diet and keep to it.

Hello King, welcome aboard! Most type 1 diabetics do not take a type 2 medication, unless they have some insulin resistance. Do you have that problem? Is your doctor an endocrinologist (diabetes specialist)? Do you use carb counting to determine your Novolog dosages? I take 1 unit of insulin for every 6 carbs I eat. Carb counting helps to establish good control.

You are afraid of lows, but the highs you are having can be much more serious than the lows. If you have an average of 300, or even 200, for a long period of time, you can develop terrible diabetes complications. Damage in the eyes can lead to blindness, damage to the kidneys can lead to dialysis treatment, and other nerve damage can cause other major problems. Long term high blood sugar is the cause of these problems. If you gradually lower your daily carb intake, test frequently, continue your exercise with caution and use carb counting to determine your insulin dosages before eating, you will become accustomed to lower blood sugar, without having bad lows (hypos).

I try and keep my blood sugar average 90-100 and I do not have many hypos. I can always feel a low wheb it begins, so it is easy to eat some fast acting carbs to keep the low from getting bad. I eat an average of 130-150 carbs per day and I exercise every day. With this kind of control I have an A1c of 5.6 and I have no diabetes complications after 64 years of type 1.

You can have good control with a low blood sugar average and avoid complications if you can get over your fear of having lows. I have had many lows during my 64 years of diabetes, but they have not caused me any damage. Having a few lows is not nearly as damaging as the complications that can develop with a high blood sugar average and a high A1c.

You do a lot of great things, but your average of 300 is very high. Don't panic unless you start to approach the 60's in your BG or unless you start to sweat or get dizzy. It is hard on the body to go lower than it's used to at first. But allow it to do that and you will be back to what is closer to normal.

Keep up the physical activity and things like that, but now maybe work on your diet. You need energy because of the activity level, but you might need more good or healthy fats or lean proteins in your diet instead of the energy high carbs.

Have you met with a dietitian lately? I bet that would help a lot.

I have mentioned on this site before that glucose tablets are a diabetics' best friend. They're inexpensive, very available, portable, and come in different flavors. When I get that funny shakey feeling and I'm not in a position to eat or drink, I take a tablet ( i always carry them in my purse, glove compartment, or on my bedside table). The only downside is- They taste really, really, good!They will get you over a low episode without overloading your system with too much sugar.

alot of people say oh you have to eat right and exercise and no soda or sugars only water and tea and vegetables, it is not true, if you take humalog give your self as many units as the food you are eating not what your bloodsugar is my endo told me this and since then my range is 70- 190 which is still a big range but my body goes low alot, but i drink soda and eat pasta and candy, like last night i had pasta for dineer like 2 or 3 servings worth with soday 2 1/2 hours later my bloodsugar was 189 i took 15 units of humalog now if u dont take a fast acting insulin i say yes make modifications but dont stress yourself ok, goodluck i wish you the best if u need help im here for you

Chivas, you have not given us enough information about yourself. It would help if we knew whether you are type 1, or type 2. You have been given good advice, but you can get even better advice if you tell us more about you diabetes management. Do you use medication for your diabetes, or do you use insulin? I looked at your profile and I can not tell if you are a diabetic. Maybe you are a prediabetic.

I think you should eat right. take vitamins, excerise, with swiming, bike riding, walking, for 45 minutes a day…this will help you to control your sugar levels. Remember to take your sugar level befor and after each activiity. If your sugar level is low before you do a activity, eat a light meal. this will help you. Try to avoid cafferine products, and cut down on your carbs. Eat fruits and fresh vegetables…even frozen fruit is good for you. Eat your meals on time, and have a snack before bedtime. Its okay to eat ice cream, small portions. maybe 2 x a week…for your sugar craves. It does help. Go to bed early before 11PM and then get up early for your day to start. Keep busy! And don't get depressed because this will affect your sugar levels immensely

I too have had a battler getting my glucose under control. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a month ago and my doctor told me to look at fighting this as running a marathon,not a sprint. So far the lowest I have got my numbers to down to is 231. It ranges all the way up to 500+. I was told to drink lots of water and exercise and to especially watch the diet.

I found that drinking lots of water and eating lots of low carb vegetables helped lower my blood sugar fast. After being diagnosed I started to test before and 2 hours after each meal to determine how the foods I ate affected my blood sugar. After my numbers came down a lot I started testing 1 hour after eating and was able to fine-tune my diet even more. My A1C went from 14.1 to 5.9 in just a few months. My last 4 were all below 6.

By testing what I ate, I found that I had to give up all bread and grain products, potatoes, pasta, rice and most foods that contained more than 5-6 net carbs per serving.

I write how I controlled my blood sugar on my website. I even talk about how and what I eat. Click on the link below. It may help or give you some ideas. Then again it might not. I figure it can’t hurt to at least try some things. This is what worked for me.

You gave very good advice. I went to your website. Its so nice. And yes, I did catch the milk products on the right coloum. I too love drinking Almond Milk. Its more healthy for you. Do you talk about sweet posion? All those artifical sweetners are not so good for diabetics, including Aspartane. These are dangerous because once it hits the blood stream, it turns into wood alcoholal and then destroys the nerons and cells that are in the brain. When your body hits a high temperature, it then turns from lying in muscle tissues, formaldehyde its very bad for anyone. Most people aren't aware of it. But if you google "sweet Posion you will come up with websites that will give you more information on it.
Diet drinks and other beverages with artifical sweetners in them are being promoted, but the health issures are critical after being researched. I think everyone should read what's in the bottle before drinking it.

I am sure there is something to be said for the sweet poison discussion but, Something I don't see anyone mention the use of and is an excellent natural plant based supplement that is available as a sweetener is STEVIA. It comes in powder, tablet, and liquid form. It has absolutely no negative side effects and is available at all reliable health and natural foods stores, and even showing up of late in some of the common grocery stores that you may frequent yourself. Give it a try… Do some reading on it. Google it… I am a 10 year diabetic on a pump with controlled blood sugar numbers. My A1c has been under 6 for 4 years now.

While I'm not a huge fan of artificial sweeters, they don't turn to wood alcohol when you ingestion them. Its some weird urban legend that has been debunked time and time again by a boat load of different people and organizations. I believe that one, maybe aspatame, can turn into something bad when exposed to extreme heat for prolonged periods. Far hotter and longer than it would be subject to in and food or drink prep. It's a good scare story to sell books but not much else.

I take 2 kinds of insulin(Lantus and Humolog). My numbers still run above 200 and sometimes 300 or more. I do not exercise much since I have an amputation of my left leg. I do have a prosthesis but I have trouble with my balance alot. I've been a Type 2 diabetic for 16 years now. I know it is alot of what I eat and don't eat.

I've had it for 16 years and have had various medications and changes in the amount of insulin I take all the time. I drink a lot of water during the day and very seldom anything else. I don't think I get enough sleep though because I get up several times a night to go to the bathroom and the I am up around 7 every morning.

Do you have an infection or are you feeling sick?
What are your numbers?

Gabby brought up a very good question. STRESS…stress has made my numbers stay in the upper 200 the last couple of weeks. I have been taking 2 types of insulin as well as metphormin and my numbers won't budge, but my family and I went out and had a GREAR day the other day and now my numbers are coming down…I'm contemplating yoga…I already meditate, but have not been able to get into it lately as I have not been able to get my mind to shut off!!!!

This heat is my main stress right now besides an abcess that is almost healed on my inner left thigh. I also have a problem with having the means to get the right kind of food to eat like I need to. Any advice would be welcome.

Try looking for a discount generic grocery store like Aldi - they also sell produce for low prices. Try doing some kind of indoor alternative exercise, even if it's just jumping jacks with your arms only, arm circles, etc. Yes, you will sweat, but you will also strengthen your heart and increase your aerobic capacity. When the abscess is healed you'll be a step further toward heading out for a walk. Pay attention to serving sizes and reduce the amounts of food you are eating. Lots of times we think we're hungry and it is really thirst. And most important, READ LABELS to cut down on your carbs. I'm starting to learn that the less processed food you buy, the better off you'll be in terms of health.
