Once I have decided on what I want to purchase (retail, online, or otherwise), I will usually go to one or more of the many shopping assistant websites out there. My favorites include,,,,

Those should keep you busy for awhile but just know that there are many, many more.

There can be significant price differences for the same items between websites. Again, it is important to check out a seller by reputation and to consider shipping costs. I never select the lowest price without using a little common sense on knowing that the sites are legitimate and that my personal information is secure. (Look for an https: in the browser address bar or look for the lock icon on your screen).

There are a lot of scams out there so I urge you to use protection and precautions when shopping online, chatting online, banking online, and even emailing online. There are many ways to encrypt your online transactions and communications. Look into them. The topic goes beyond the scope of this discussion but you can check your favorite search engines on encryption.

For now I just wanted to introduce you to the online shopping comparison sites. I’d sure welcome any that you’re aware of.

I'll have to use this coming up with everyone going back to school soon and Christmas. I have already been the victim of a unknown place taking money out of our account and I had no idea who they were. For as tight of money we have, I have to utilize every dollar. LOL…my "spending" just took a change for the better now. I give myself and hubby a cash in pockey allowance each week. If we spend it all, that is it, no more (unless it is a necessity and a die do need). I love these tips.

Now you know my secret to holiday shopping. My wife wanted this little hand held blender/mixer and I was finding it around $30. I think I ended up paying $18 (delivered) by shopping around. In a future "issue" of "Money Matters," I will share with you some sites on where to get coupon codes online for free shipping, % discounts and other perks. I am also on a cash allowance basis and sometimes even roll over to the next week with a few hidden bucks. I think when you use cash, you are more conscious of it. I also write down where the allowance goes to better track the impulses. No more vending machines for me! I bring my own snacks (and water or pop) to the office.
