Does anyone use the plate method for help in controlling your diabetes?

I use a slightly different plate method. I use a 7 inch salad plate instead of those huge (10 and up to 14 inch) dinner plates. We have a tendency to eat to the size of our plate; so making the plate smaller helps portion control.

I love using the plate method!!! In fact, I use the plate method with EVERYONE in my house. I wanted my children to learn proper eating habits now oppose to regretting it later on. Since Diabetes runs on both sides of my family and one of my husbands sides. Besides, we all needed a change.

How do you use it with a food item that has both carbs and protein in it?

Half of the plate is suppose to be low carb'd veggies, 1/4 is suppose to be your protein (meat, eggs, soy, etc) and the other 1/4 of my plate is the starch (stuffing, rice, pasta, potatoes-basically anything that is higher is starch). The low carb fruit for me is placed on the side. Just as long as my meal does not go over 40g of carbs (or less). My doctor gives me a few extra, just as long it is not excessive, I carb it into my pump, AND I do not make a BIG habit of it. I also use a smaller plate or a cheap divided toddler plate/bowl. I am doing way better that i was before and have lost a little weight.
