Hello friends, I am new to the gang, I was wondering is walking 6 miles a day is good or bad. Dr have put me on high blood pressure medicine also. So I need to do something to control these issues. I need some encourgaging people that are willing to work me (walking) and have some encouragement. Thanks

Welcome, joybell.

I think everyone has made some good points. Wear good shoes and socks. Don't overdo it.

But as a diabetic, make sure you always have some emergency carbs with you. Hard candy, glucose tablets, a small bottle of Gatorade--something like that can be essential. If you're half-way done and three miles from home, you don't want to have an unexpected low blood sugar and have nothing with you.

Hey Joybell,
6 miles is wonderful. I am working my way up to several miles a day. Right now I am doing about 1, but as I increase I hope to be doing many more. I am inspired. Definately, you have to have good shoes and socks (I learned recently about socks) Have you noticed a difference in your numbers since you started?

Good for you!!! I am a walker too, anywhere from 2 to 4 miles a day, and i just joined my local Curves to work out the other parts of the body. The walking has helped me to bring down my BP and BS numbers, not to mention it is something I like doing. I am lucky enough to work for a company that has a track around their property that is about 2 miles long and if the weather is bad you can walk in the basement which is also about 1 mile one lap around. Hope you are walking in a safe place and keep it up.

that is a long way to walk. Don't try to do it all at once, you may overwork yourself . Walking is good but it is not a guarantee that your BP and glucose levels are going to go down. Get in a pattern you are comfortable doing a couple or more times a week.

we had started a thread about walking. It has to do with how to do it safely. You may want to read it and join in.
6 miles a day? why so far? you should gradually work up to that. Walking works so many body parts—legs, hips, knees, heart, lungs, arms, back. So, yes it is very good for you and cheap to do! All you need is some comfy clothing and some good shoes. which is very important. Always walk in good shoes. Your feet are very important!!!

I think what happened is the reason for me walking 6 miles, because I felt determined to loose the weight and to get off of my meds. One week I done 30 miles a week and the next week I noticed that may have overworked myself, so I cut it down to maybe 20 miles a week.

OH You lucky one,
You are very fortunate to be able to walk like that.I think you should do whatever you are comfotable with, and not over do. You should be in excellent shape soon if not already. Keep on walking.

Hi Joybell,
Oh may…6 miles a day…that is a long way. But yes it is a very good thing, it will help with your blood pressure and your B/S numbers. I have both as well. I do about 1 mile a day which my dr is happy with every night or i will be now that it has gotten cooler at night. If we were closer we could walk together, I would love to have someone to walk with. Good luck to you. Lanore

Thanks, you keep up the good work also. It really make you feel good when you see your BS numbers good.

Wow, that is terrific. Just be careful and don't overdo it. I hope to be able to walk 1 or 2 miles soon. I just had Lap-band surgery and recovering.
