As of this morning (2-28-12) we have 688,003 members. That is incredible in less than a year from my previous post that we have nearly tripled.

Oh you are math is fuzzy. That is a year and a half. Ok a little more than that....YIKES. I should have paid more attention. Where are those years going?

Just a bit of denial there, I suspect! Don't worry about it, comes with the ageing
process. (-;

Why??? Course 2010 was a rotten year for me so… I cant wait til we hit the million member mark!!!! Ive been tracking our membership number for a long time. I feel DC has incredible potential to influence and bring change with the strength of our number!!!!

You are right. The thing I would like to see is more of them participating. There are a lot of empty profiles out there.

I am finding it very difficult to find and follow anything on this site…I think it needs more brains then I have got …

GabbyPA 2012-02-29 18:40:16 -0600 Report

If you read a discussion, article, video or recipe that you like you can click on the "track" button and that will add it to your feed. When someone posts on it, it will show up on your profile page.

If you want to see only the things you are tracking, you can click on the box on your profile activity page that says, "show only tracked items".

If you see a post that speaks to you and you want to get to know the person who posted it, click on their profile picture and once on their page, click on the "follow" button and they will be added to your feed.

I hope that helps.

Gabby Im going to start a discussion about this and see if our members have ideas to get participation up!

GabbyPA 2012-02-29 18:35:40 -0600 Report

Boy was that a great discussion! I have not seen so many replies in one day in a long time. Good job!

dietcherry 2012-02-28 10:48:39 -0600 Report

I used to greet and friend newbies daily on their profile in an attempt to get them to stick around cuz I know how valuable this site is but the new system of following makes the process creepy so Ive pretty much stopped :(

GabbyPA 2012-02-29 18:36:56 -0600 Report

You can still welcome them on their wall. That way you are just saying hello. Don't let the term bother you. It just means you are interested in what they have to share. It can make them feel honored that someone is interested in them.

dietcherry 2012-02-29 18:43:10 -0600 Report

I know Gabby and I do…sometimes. Its just the word Follow that is bugging alot of us and the newbies dont realize right off the meaning of it and they are not feeling honored. I know this cuz a couple of them have told me that found it odd and disconcerting. It seems to give the appearance of "Im watching you!"

So does this mean its going to stay this way or do you know?

GabbyPA 2012-02-29 18:48:44 -0600 Report

I don't know, but I imagine it will stick around. Maybe we can see about changing the word to "Hello" or something like that. I think the friend invitations were getting unanswered for so long and this way it doesn't require an answer. Some people don't want friends, they just want to follow what some people are saying. The function of it is really a lot better, but maybe we can look into changing the terminology. I am used to it on other sites, so I guess that is why it didn't bother me.

I used to get complaints about being an uninvited friend to new members, but I have not gotten any complaints about following the new members.

dietcherry 2012-02-29 19:08:40 -0600 Report

Now this makes sense Gabby in fact this is the first explanation Ive seen given to us for the change, so thank you!
And I really like your idea of changing the terminology to something friendlier! Maybe we can make that happen to everyones satisfaction!

GabbyPA 2012-02-29 19:18:09 -0600 Report

It just took a LOT to get it working, and getting it changed or tweaked may take a little time. They are listening. They just can't wiggle their noses like Samantha on Bewitched...LOL! I bet they wish they could.

GabbyPA 2010-06-18 08:48:36 -0500 Report

Right now, 9:46 am on June 18, there are 187,456 members. It grows so fast, if you ask me tomorrow I will have a larger number for you. Amazing isn't it?

HarryZ 2010-06-20 10:08:29 -0500 Report

Can you please show me how I can find this statistic? Also is the 187,456 members, represents only people with Diabetes?

GabbyPA 2010-06-20 10:21:55 -0500 Report

The only way I know how to find it is to be friends with every person on the site. You can look at my profile, John Crowley's profile or Amy's and look at our friends. There you will find a number above the pictures that says "my Friends". I don't have a way to know if they are all diabetic, but chances are there are several caretakers and some students who are doing research.
By the way, June 20 at 11:19 am we are up to 188,206

daweinst 2012-02-28 08:59:03 -0600 Report

Is this still the only way to see how many members there are? It looks like you now only have 2,360 friends. Do you have a current estimate of the number of users?
