If you've been around Diabetic Connect long enough, you've heard someone ask (or perhaps you've asked yourself), "What are the points for?"

We are so excited to let you know that as part of our celebration of the two-year anniversary since we officially launched Diabetic Connect, we are sponsoring a Points Contest.

By earning at least 500 points during the entire month of June, you will qualify to be entered to win great prizes, including a Grand Prize Pack ($200 value) which includes a new meter, A1C self-test kit, diabetes cookbook, and much more. Additionally, six First Prize winners will receive $50 Walgreens Gift Cards.

As part of this contest, we have revised the way you earn points on the site to reward those who provide contributions that get others talking, rating, and engaged in discussions and conversations. You can go to your Profile page and click on the "My Points" tab to see the new point structure.

One important note, the "My Points" tab doesn't do a good job of explaining points you receive when your discussion post or other contribution receives a rating from another member. Here's the breakdown of points you can earn from ratings:
1 Star = 0 points
2 Stars = 5 points
3 Stars = 10 points
4 Stars = 15 points
5 Stars = 20 points

As you can see, rating is an important way to earn points and it helps us identify the best contributions to the site. So be sure to give ratings to discussions, recipes, news, etc. whenever you find something you like.

Finally, for every 500 points you earn beyond the minimum of 500 points, you'll earn another chance to win, up to a maximum of 5 chances to win.

Let me know if you have any questions. Get posting and rating and participating!

Can you explain for us new diabetics is this going to be a monthly event with different prize packages or was this a one time deal? If it was the latter can you explain how the points program works, will the points stay as noted on the points tab? will the above star feature be a part of the points available or will they be worth a different amount? From the comments I have read from other new community members there are quite a number of us that would like an inservice education regarding the whole points program and if & when will there be another contest?
Thank you for your outstanding work on our behalf

Howdy Rosemary

I think some of those questions have been asked and addressed earlier in this discussion. (That's one of the downsides of this new arrangement as the newest part of the discussion is at the top and many people don't read it all.) You may be enlightened regarding several of your queries should you read to the bottom of the discussion.

I went to the place to see my points, but, no total points were listed. I am confused as to how to read my total.

We don't provide a total points for the month. You'll see a total points earned since you first joined and you'll also see the points earned before June 1st when we switched to the new points system.

So for this contest, it's pretty easy to see your total for the month by subtracting the points before June 1 from the total points.

I hope that helps.

I have not been around in a while, so when I was able to get back, i was a little lost. What ever happened to the rating of gold member, silver member etc?

Yeah, the stars and different colored stars were very confusing. When we redesigned the sites, we felt it was much clearer and less confusing to simply use points.

Do you miss the stars?

So I wish everyone the best.
I hope that you are able to keep this going once you start this it sounds fun.

I think this is a good idea. Maybe it will help me get off my rear end and start talking to other diabetics.

This is a really great way to get the new and some of us older diabetics to start getting back into the groove of checking our blood and watching our diet everyday and every meal. I know that I have gotten out of the habit of checking my sugar levels as often as I should have and a recent doctor's visit brought it to my attention that I have been neglecting myself.
My numbers are getting back to where they should be but it is really taking an effort on my part and my family also.
This is a lifestlye change and something that you have to commit to completely in order to succeed.
Thanks to you for all your good advice and help and I will continue to search your website for recipes and good rules to follow. Keep up the good work for all us Type2 Diabetics.

I am really excited about the chance to win in the drawing. This website has provided immense info for me to use. I think it will motivate me to get more involved.

This maybe the jump start I need to pay attention to my diabetes. Diagnosed a year ago…first I was confused on what I should and shouldn't eat…now I don't even try…not even bothering with my blood checks. Now that I have admitted that fact, maybe I can find motivation to face diabetes 2 and improve my health…

Are you going to do other points contests? I ask because I just learned about this site when a recipe appearred in my inbox.I doubt I will be able to earn 500 points between now and the end of the month.
I am a new diabetic and I am still trying to get my meals straight. Before it was confirmed that I had diabetes I would only eat 1 good meal a day, sometimes something small at lunch. I am having a difficult time trying to eat 3 meals a day. Also before diabetes I never snacked after supper, now I am getting up in the middle of the night to eat. I am trying to keep my weight down because of another medical problem. But, every time I have gone back to my internist I will of gained a few pounds. I love the recipe section probably because I love to cook. I am trying the recent posting of the BBQ sauce for supper tonight. I had to dress it up my own way a little, because since becoming a diabetic I have developed an acute sense of sugar in different foods, and when I tested this sauce before I used it I felt that it was a little too sweet for my liking. Congratulations on your second anniversary. Here's to many more.

That's great feedback. We are certainly going to evaluate the contest at the end and look at the possibility of rolling it out on a regular basis.

But don't give up on this month yet. Once you get going, the points come pretty fast.

MAYS 2010-06-14 18:22:37 -0500 Report

That's a great starter package for any diabetic who is serious about managing and taking control of their diabetes.

Why not include a book on diabetes care ?

Good luck to all !
