Everyone and their uncle now a days are looking for another way to help with thier diabetes. But, i think it is very important that people actually STUDY what they are doing.
For instance: did you know that dried herbs are more potent than fresh? If a book or article tells you to eat soemthing, make sure if it is dried, you take less of it.
Many herbs like garlic are very helpful. I have heard people say they tried it and it did not work. Hmmm. How much were they eating? a tablespoon a day. HA!! You actually need up to 6 cloves of garlic in a day for it to work.
Please, read everything you can on herbs and other alternative meds and get the facts. do not just take someones word for something. There are herbs out there that should not be taken with certain types of medicines. Their are herbs out their that if you take them for you sugar, but have high blood pressure, it could do you harm. Know about everything you put in your mouth so it can really really help you.

GREAT advice! I spend a lot of time with my health food staff to see what and how to use supplements. It is true, that too much of herbs or supplements are just as bad as too much medicine. Your liver still has to get rid of the excess. And they have reactions and effects that you need to be aware of. Natural doesn't automatically mean safe. That is why I watch my daily recommendations of vitamins because too much is bad.
Herbs are harder because they are not regulated, so talk with the experts along the way. My local store has a research center right in the store where you can look up all kinds of inforamtion and get help. I love that.
I would love to have a wholistic doctor to work with, but we are a small town and don't have one. Talk to your Pharmasist, they have tons of knowledge and will share it with you if you just take a moment to ask them.

Reading up on herbs is great. I have a book that tells me what the herbs were used for by the indians and what they are used for now. All my books tell me how to prepare raw herbs.
One really needs to be careful when taking caplets. You never really know whats in the caplet. Could be cut grass! always know the real amount of herbs that you are taking. Cinammon is a good herb, but know how much of it to take for yourself.

To prepare raw herbs where do you buy them?? I can see some of the regular ones like cinnamon, but where do you find the more exotic ones?

check out your local herb shops. Another place you can find herbs (dried) is many stores that sell wiccan supplies. But, I would check to see if you have any herbal stores around. there is one not too far from me three towns over. he also does a flee market on Sundays, so If I need, say senna, for constipation, I wait and get them cheaper at the flea market. Then I bring it home and make a tincture (boiled in water). Look in the yellow pages of your phone book.

I went out and bought a food dehydrator so i could dry my friuts and veggies and herbs. there are many ways to dry them. they make wholesome snacks. Dried apples are a great snack for on the go. My son makes his own beef jerky. Yeah, i know, just one more thing to do! But its a GOOD thing .

I have been considering purchasing one. What type did you get and how many levels does it have? When I tried to do the Vegan thing, every recipie called for a dehydrator I stuck with the ones that didn't require that step. My mom used to use one. We made our own rasins, dried herbs, and fruit rolls. I want to try cactus jerky...once I figure out how to get rid of the thorns! LOL

How or where can you find out how much you need????

DonnaAnn 2008-08-16 21:32:34 -0500 Report

I have several books that I have bought. when I want to check up on a herb, I look at all three books and see what they say. You can go to your local library and read up no herbs. they have many books on Hebal remedies. You can google a herb by going to the SEARCH and type in the herb your looking for. There are magazines you can read also. If youhave a health shop in town, go and visit them, they will know also. Dont buy any herb you have never heard of.

I agree wholeheartedly. Some herbs may not work well with any medication you are taking.I feel it is necessary to check, recheck, and then use.
