Hi, I wrote a letter to my Governor of my State (WV) I am hoping we can develop a support group for diabetics.

As a diabetic and no family to help me with my diabetes and I know I am not alone when I say no one to hlep me, We need a support group. Diabetes is a drastic change and anyone and everyone's life. Especially children, we need to have a place were we can gather among other diabetics an share our stories of struggles, families, children, work, low and high sugar and share our support. Not to mention the worst of it all DEPRESSION and Diabetes. Some families can't afford meds or supplies to take meds, a Voucher for supplies, Dinner parties for Diabetics to socialize and get to know one another we come in all shapes, sizes, ethnic groups, young, and old, men and women. We are not alone in this but, we do feel alone. So I wanted to try to get this idea out there and see if he will help support this mission. It would benefit me as well many others in my community. We don't have to be alone in this battle against Diabetes.

Do you think this is a good idea or not.

With such great initiate, you will do much for your area I am sure. Even if your Governor is not able to do something directly, you can. You can start with a group that exists or go to www.meetup.com and start a group there. When you attend a diabetes education class, you will meet others who are looking for support as well. It is a gold mine. Find a neat place to meet and before you know it, you will have developed a support group that is a shining light and inspires us all.

Gabby you are a huge Resource thank you for all the info and encouragement you bestow. You are truly blessed, you are the first person to encourage and I to find more encouragement. I need to contact vendors to see if they are willing to help prepare a meal or diabetic desert. Thanks so much!

There you go...rolling on thru. I am so glad that people like you are out there to get things started. A small step can turn into a big event and even if you touch just one family, you are going to have success. You have some great ideas. You will hit bumps, but push through those and realize your dream. If you talk to John Crowley he might be able to help as well. This site was one of his dreams, and look at how much it helps so many people. I bet he would have a wealth of information he could share with you.

I think this is a great idea. I'm just starting out and have really no info about my diet, etc because my doctor was not helpful as much as the people here have been. To have a support group would help benefit others with the knowledge to help everyone understand more of their condition.

Have you checked for existing support groups? There is usually at least one accessible to everyone. I know that around me every hospital has one, there are some community based ones, some pharmacies and doctors offices organize them, the JDRF, the American Diabetes Association and a local diabetes charity have them. I think that United Way do them in some cities as well. Where about in WV are you?
