carb diet

Hi my name is Barbara age 61 and from Wisconsin.Been a Type 2 Diabetic sense 2003.For breakfast lunch and dinner I can have 4 carbs to eat.Snack 3 carbs to eat.I have a diet plan from the diabetes educator.I have a question what is a serving size if It is not listed in the recipe.Say like the recipe for cereal the recipe says 8 servings.How much is 1 serving.My doctor says he will put me on insulin if I don't get my blood sugar under control.Right now I am on oral medication.

what you mean by 4 carbs? 4 servings? i try to have at least no more than 20 grms of carbs per meal…

I believe 4 carbs actually refers to 4 carb exchanges with each exchange around 15 grams of carb. I have found it easier and more accurate to actually count the grams of carb in each food. Depending on who you read/follow, different carb exchanges can have different values..The guy who wrote "Think Like a Pancreas" ascribes 13 grams of carb for "Dairy exchanges" if I remember right…it's just too confusing for me.

I have never understood that exchange method. And I just try to limit carbs - but I am bread addicted - unfortunatly. So I have tried to cut mysel down to 4 slices of bread a day - instead of a whole loaf.

I'm pretty new here, but something doesn't sound right. I get 7-8 carbs a day-2 for breakfast & lunch ; dinner - 3 carbs and one for a snack in the afternoon. 1200 calorie meal plan. I am trying to lose about 25 lbs. I also do an hour of walking per day.
For me this is an example of how works: breakfast 1 Activia Light Yogurt & one graham cracker, lunch: 2 oz turkey, one piece of bread and homemade vegi soup, small apple for snack & a few almonds-like 5, dinner is 2 oz fish or chicken, maybe rice or yams- 2 servings (1/3 cup for each serving) 1 1/2 cups cooked vegi's, 2/3 cup blueberries; 2 little pats of butter on the vegi's. That's just an example. I did go to a dietician and she figured out the number per day.

Barbara—This is about 31/2 weeks late—but I just recently joined diabetic connect. I read your letter, and I also think you have too many carb allotments. I was diagnosed in January with type 2 diabetes, and a diabetic educator put me on 3carbs per meal and 1 carb or less for each snack, plus at least 30 minutes per day exercise (walking). She also wanted me to lose 10 pounds (which I have) and have brought my A1c from 6.5 to 6.2. I am not on any diabetes medicine.

I am sorry you are going through this. I am so thankful I am on the insulin pump now. When you say 4g of carbs are you referring to carb serving choices? If the label is saying 8 servings at total of 32 g of carbs. Take the total servings and divide that by the total carbs. There is your carb count for each serving. I hope this helps you out!

If you use the exchange method a single serving of carbs = 15g. So if you are eating toast for breakfast and a single slice is 22g, you can say you could have one slice of toast and have some left over for a piece of fruit or something.
As KD mentioned, your amounts seem high. Usually 45g-60g is for a meal and a snack is usually kept around 15g. The ADA has a great booklet that shows you what a serving of food is and how many grams of carbohydrates are in each serving. You can go to and look for a free book on food exchanges. I used that to teach me how much I can eat. You can't go by a serving on a package because it might have more carbs in that than you want.

Hay , Gabby, I was reading what you where saying about Carbs well I am going to check it out so I can get some help on this to so I can keep my BS at the right range. see Lately it has been going down low and to me to low like in the 50s then it is very hard for me to get things done or say do anything, and when I seen your discussion I thought I would check it out and I feel that it will help me out so Thank you lol

Gabby- Thank you. I will check out these sites and any other advice. Iam totally lost. I thought I could do it on my own.I guess I really need help from those who know than me. I have to admit. I can not do it on my own.I did start with changing my tennis shoes. I have the ones with the ball on the bottom on the shoe.There is a big difference in walking the dogs and when I wear them at work. Thanks again.

This is why I don't like exchanges. 1 serving is basically 1 serving of whatever somebody decided. 1 "carb" is 15g so for instance 1 serving of rice would be about 2.5 "carb." So, you need to figure out the nutrition in the whole dish and then work out how many carbs were in a serving.

On the diet side of things. I would say that if you are having problems controlling blood sugar your diet is doing no favors. 4 "carbs" is 60g which is a lot for a diabetic, unless you are working out extremely hard for long periods of time. 45g for a snack is also huge. It might be a good idea to get a second opinion. What you can have is not what somebody tells you you can but what your body tells you you can. If you use your glucose meter you should be able to find what foods work for you and how much of them you can have. You may find that you will not only be able to avoid insulin but all medication completely. That may not be possible but it might be.

I finished my diabetes class a week or two ago. In the meal planning, it was suggested 45 to 50 g of Carbs for me for each BLD and 13 to 15g for snacks. That was from a daily total of 163 carbs for the day; 65g protein, 43 g fat and 20-35 g of fiber a day. This is based on 1300 Calories a day.
