When I was first diagnosed, one of the things I was told was to watch my protions. Not much was really said about carbs. So, I had a cup of this, and a 1/4 cup of that, and one of these and one and 1/2 of those. Ta-dah! Well, almost. I was doing all the porton control in one meal. Then I would take my sugar and get a whopping 300!
I think that instead of calling it portion control, it should be called carb control. It was not until a year after I was diagnosed, that I learned about how many carbs I should be taking in at a meal. So, I now do what I call carb control instead of protion control. does this make sense?

Yes it does make sense. I attended a class for diabetics at my local hospital after being diagnosed and the first thing taught was to read labels and count carbs. The final class involved a shopping trip. So I was always taught count carbs.

Hello,
I think that what you said makes perfect sense. I have found that understanding the carb diet is a fundemental of controlling my diabetis! I have been diagnosed for 3 1/2 yrs and I am just learning what I wish that I was taught from the beginning. I believe that every person with diabetis should be taught this from the start. I sincerely think that if I were on a "Carb Diet" my feet would still be in check, my eyes would be in control, my cholesterol, lipids, and heart condition.
Thank you for your input on this. If it benefits even one person it can make the world of difference in their life!
