The way my doctor explained it was Type 1 you do not produce insulin. Type 2 you produce insulin but your body is resistant to it.

There are many differences between the two, but here is the basic difference.

Type 1 is usually found in children, though it can be diagnosed in adults. It is an autoimmune disease where your pancreas stops producing insulin. Because you don't have insulin that allows the glucose from your meals to get into your muscles for energy, you tend to feel tired and some people will loose weight. Untreated, this will elevate your numbers to dangerous highs and can cause severe damage and even death. Type 1 diabetics are also called insulin dependent. They must have insulin to survive.

Type 2 diabetes is usually onset much later in life, but we are seeing an epidemic of type 2 in children and the causes are still being studied. Usually it is based on our bodies becoming insensitive to insulin. Meaning that while our pancreas does produce it, it takes more than normal to get our bodies to accept the glucose into our muscles. Often type 2 is treated with diet and exercise and then medicines. Usually oral meds are prescribed, but type 2 can also benefit from being on insulin.

That is the nutshell version. As you explore the site, you will find more info.
