Starting today, Shorty31 and I are going to hold each other accountable for getting back into our exercise regiment. We are using the guide of a great post called No Excuse Exercise Program posted here: http://www.diabeticconnect.com/discussions/33...

Check out the link, and if you want to join us, we will check in daily, just to encourage each other on this issue. Eventually, as the group grows, we will be at different points in the program, but today we start.

How do you manage to keep walking when the weather gets cold? Any suggestions for stationary exercises at home without equipment?
I do some stretching and yoga poses occasionaly but I haven't been regular.

I also found that our malls open the inner section (not the stores) early each morning for walkers. I go there some times as well. It is a controlled climate and I am also not tempted to buy anything.

Oh well, I am in NYC, no big malls where I live. I have to go down to my university Gym if I have to walk indoors. Which is not a bad idea just becomes complecated time wise. There is no way we can exercise and come back home. It has to be somehow managed during the time I am on campus.
That is why my query about exercise at home. So that I can exercise in the morning before I start my routine.

What I have done when I can't get out is interval walking/marching while watching TV. What I do is choose a 1/2 hour show and walk or slow march in place during the show, then during the commercials, I jog or run in place. Work up the heart and then when the show comes back on I drop back down to walking in place.

Wow! that is a great idea. I can do this. Especially if I start from 10 or 15 and move up to 30 and 45.

I have not done it for a while, but I used to call it my Jeapordy exercise. LOL. If I was feeling really good, I would do it through Wheel of Fortune also.

I just got finished walking a four mile walk to Step Out: walk to fight Diabetes. My team, raised over $300.00 for the event and had loads of fun doing it.

That is great! Doing things in a group like that makes it so much fun. I am hoping there will be a walk in my area this November for diabetes awareness month. I would like to do that. I just did a one mile walk on 9-11 for a remembrance day.

I got my pedometer the other day. They never last long and I got this one from Nature Made vitamins. It is really easy to use and so far seems to be working fine. I like seeing the miles I walk on the meter, it makes me feel so good about what I am doing.

For my birthday this year my dad asked what I wanted and I told him that a gym membership would be great. So,as an early birthday present I got a 14 month membership to Gold's Gym in northern Illinois and I've been working out a little bit every day.
I've been mixing up my routine. For example on Monday, I rode a stationary bike for 30 minutes, 20 minutes on arms, and swam for 30 minutes. For Tuesday I did 30 minutes on legs, 11 minutes on the bike, 20 minutes on the tread mill, and than I walked around my neighbor hod for about 10 minutes (Yesterday I seamed to have a battery back on and saw always on the go).

That is great. Don't get burnt out and remember to have fun. That is what will keep you going back day after day. Then when you start to see results, you will be thrilled all the more. Keep up the good work!

I am with you on this! Spoke with Curves staff member who is helping as well. I will post regularly, after returning from the gym. I went yesterday and will go today. I am having some challenges with consistency. And my blood sugars reflect the inconsistency! I am so glad that I am part of this community!

I've started back exercising walking 1 mile aday, water aerobics 3'x. Here we do zumba in the water. I've had a knee replacement, and I need another knee replacement, so thats the aerobics I can do.

I'm riding a stationary bike but for only 3 minutes trying to work up, but it painful.

Zumba in the water sounds great!!! Having worked up to three minutes after a knee replacement is quite an achievement. You keep up the good work!!!

I'm in!!!! One hour aerobics, rotating with 6 miles on stationary bike, 5-6 days a week. It motivates me even greater when I know I'm being held accountable!!!

I'll try to get membered at a fitness center for some daily exercises, if its a appreciated solution .Besides, how can I own a glucometer withouth seing a doctor to get my sugar controlled daily for the best treatment? Iam still wo ndering for answer. I feel like my diabete is at its treshold.

I am still, but I have to agree, it has fallen by the way side on the post here. I have been doing a lot of gardening and now I am going to be starting aquasize classes next month. I can't wait. I love that class. The instructor is great and I have a lot of fun. I work hard, but I don't feel like it. (until the next day) LOL

Do you have any suggestions on how we can be more on top of it, posting daily. Maybe our hours worked? I just started using Live Strong's site again and there is an exercise tracker there that tells me the calories I am burning. Maybe I will start posting that on here every day. What do you think?

Hello,
I'm in a wsheelchair so walking is out of the question. My husband bought me a powered peddle exerciser. I put it on the kitchen table and turn it on putting my hands on the peddles and away I go. Have been at this for two weeks. I'm up to 60 minutes. Even with both of my rottator cuffs torn I can peddle. You might think with it being powered how can you get exercise. Somehow it is working for me. I notice that my BG is way down the rest of the day. So if any are in need of this kind of exercise they are usually in cataloges. Thanks for letting me talk.

There are many forms of exercise that are good for you and looks like you found a good one for you. Keep up the good work, sounds like it is working real good for you.

hydrotherapy is wonderful for relaxation, increasing circulation and heart rate. the benefit is its non weight bearing and you can get a flotation device. just another activity to mix things up.

Actually, my husband is in a wheelchair and he is the one who asked me to come to the class. I had been to some before and I like them, I just can't afford to get a gym membership. So even though he has little use of his lower body, he got in there and did what he could. Those noodles help keep him afloat while he is doing his activities. We had a really good time.

I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose fitting clothing. If I HAD any loose fitting clothing, I wouldn't have signed up in the first place!

Well, so far, I have not been able to get into the class for free, but I did go yesterday and I feel great! Well, besides a sore butt, sore legs and sore arms. LOL. Really, it was a lot of fun and lasted about an hour. You don't feel like you are exercising, you are just having fun. I really enjoyed it. I hope to go back soon.

My husband has found an aquacise class for me. I don't belong to the gym (too much money) but he gets in on his insurance. The instructor is going to see if I can be his companion for the class since he is paralyzed from the waist down. That would be so cool! I enjoy those classes and they are twice a week. I hope it works out. But for now...I keep on walking!

hi gabby i started my walk today i walk to the market wiht my step son,had to stop a couple of time because i started coughing. sometimes he panic if i start to cough. but i walked to the store and back. i would say that about a half a mile. i'm so sore my joints are stiff. but i won't give up. it's nice here the weather is goregous. to mmorrow i'll walk the same walk until i can do it without coughing,then i'll walk a little longer adn a littler father. day by day. i wiegh 240 i want to wiegh 160 that about a size 14to16 that all i', not trying to be what i was when i was young and in my 20 a size12. i mean be for real i'm 53years old i want to be a size healthy. you no what i mean?

Good job Shorty! That is a lot to do for such a start. Don't overdo it and then get so sore you can't be motivated to keep doing it.
I was at the shooting range today. I got a lot of walking done there. Setting targets is a lot of back and forth. I rather enjoyed it. Though our winter went straight into summer. It is hot!

i will join i do the wii and tred mill and swimm arobics 2 a week when i am board go to wallmart walk around there as well but i only do it in 30 min a day. but lately i have slacked off. because i am looseing to much weight affraid to eat more because of the carbs.

I wish I had trouble with loosing too much weight. I just keep working. This week is week 2 and we are still in 5 min a day for 5 days a week. I know it seems like not much, but it will be a great foundation.

I stopped going to the gym on late february because I was hospitalized because I was passing a kidney stone and got an infection so then I got all depressed and all I did was self-destructive like eat anything and started smoking again, I've been trying to get in the exercize mode and take care of myself so I am quitting the newports and want to start again, it's great to have a support group…

I live in a second floor apartment and have to take my dog out 5-6 times a day. Does that count? LOL I would like to take an aerobics class at the Y but don't have the money or the transportation. I used to love it. My brother and I used to go together 3 times a week. You had to exercise, at your own pace, for 50 minutes. I would always be looking at the clock, waiting for the minutes to go by, but always felt good afterwards.

How dare you use that curse word on here!!! LOL

I used to hike too. I actually went on a survival trip in the Sierras in 1978. It was 23 days and covered 150 miles and cliff climbing. It was hell, but I never regret finishing it. I would never do it again, however, even if I was in good shape. LOL

I did my usual 40 minutes on my cross trainer and than my 5# weights for upper
body. I wish there were other things i could do, but My Dr. and PT set my
program.

They say you never forget how to ride a bike...it's true! I got on a bike for the first time in many, many years. It was so great. I did my exercise on wheels and got to see my neighbors at the same time. It was great.

I use to ride, but after 3 knee surgeries it hurt too much, that's when I started walking, still hurts but not as much. Proud of you for getting the bike out and cruisin. Riding a bike is a great way to exercise always enjoyed it until it got too painful. Roy

I swim like a rock, straight to the bottom. Just finished my walk for the night, watching "The Blind Side" wasn't watching the time like I should have went for 82 minutes. If I watch a really good movie that happens sometimes. That is such an awesome movie, brought tears to my eyes. I'll slow back down a little so it will be easier for ya'll to catch up. Don't let me down, I know you can do it.

I wish I could go bike riding. I tried it a few years ago, and because my lungs are bad, I had an asthma attack. So, I gave it up.

I was able to get in a little extra on Thursday. I walked, but I also did some planting in the garden. I love gardening as an exercise, it is like not doing anything (until the next day when i am sore. LOL)

once you get use to it you be sore. if you don't like to exercise walk a short distant until you get use to it. jumping jacks won't make you sore or strechingis not bad i have to do it for my breathing yes i have been sore that how i know it will work. irather be sore than stiff. just try it once i promise it won't be so bad.

jsut do the best you can our friend on high knows your heart. all you can do is that . i'm limited to for my breathing . but i have my granddaughter to be my strentgh just to think about here will be it have you ever read the poem footprints in the sand when she ask at the time when ineeded you the most i only saw one set of prints. and he told her don't fret my child when you saw only one set of prints in the sand is when i carried you. that what helps me.

i hate the tread mill. how do you do it. when i get on it i get light headed when i have to go on it at the doctor and they start to do the light i allways start to sweat. i'll walk around my block for 30 minute a day and up and down the step for 20min. that should almost the same time you have. together we all can reach our goals.
