lol…now I don't feel so bad. I fried some chicken wings for the first time in a long while last Sunday and made potato salad. Everyone was sooo happy. You'd think I'd been starving them for the past year. Nothing left for leftovers. Guess it's just as well though. Was a very tasty splurge while it lasted.

Harlin, you did not do a "bad" thing. Once in awhile, we have to do something different diet wise and kind of splurg. That is what helps one keep to their diet. I check my bg and if I am ok, I do something offtrack now and then and I ENJOY and SAVOR every bite. I chew it slower and thank whatever it was for giving its self for me to enjoy. It helps me to stay sane and not angry because of the D when I allow myself to wander a little.

You have made us all jealous! :) I can do ribs but I use a dry rub from the famous Rendezvous in Memphis Tn.

4 cups white distilled vinegar
4 cups water
1/3 cup of the Dry Rub
2 slabs pork loin back ribs

Dry Rub-

1/2 cup salt
1/4 cup pepper
1 Tbsp garlic powder
1 Tbsp oregano
1 Tbsp celery seed
1 Tbsp paprika
1 Tbsp chile powder

excellent ribs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you keep your blood glucose levels in check. So splurging every now and again is not going to drastically change a maintenance of good blood sugar control. Don't eat them too fast, but eat them slowly as to prolong this delicious eating experience. Lick the sauce from the bones, from the plate, and from your fingers because it's not everyday you get to do this : )

That is just not right… I m craving ribs.. and feeling an unnatural attraction to them.. get outta my head! argh!!!!!!

Gotta cheat now and then or life sucks! I have a black licoriche (sp) stick most nights. Keeps me from cheating too often and keeps my sugars from dropping too low overnight. Not sure ALL those ribs are a good cheat but as long as you compensate I say go for it.

caroljo 2010-08-26 07:07:31 -0500 Report

black licorice huh, well does Bassetts licorice work? love bassetts licorice, how much do you eat. Good for you that you found something that keeps you bs from dropping too low overnight. So far thats been my toughest challenge, cucumber and cheese made it better first thing in the a.m. but carbs alone will work against me. Ah ribs, oh yeah savor the flavor.

Oh my God, doesn't that sound soooo delicious. In my case I can't cook wortha $hit!. Excuse my french…I get so mad, because my father was an excellent cook and he use to make the most delicious food…He would cook ribs like the way you describe…And no one in my immediate family had diabetes, except for me and I didn't get it until Jan. 1999…and I'm 67yrs. old now. What makes me having diabetes worse,is that I love to eat…I love food…all kinds just like my dad…
I try so hard to be more sensible, I gave up smoking 40 years ago and I don't miss them…I gave up drinking almost at the same time. I will have some red wine once in awhile, but no beer or hard stuff…don't miss it…but food, that's my waterloo!

caroljo 2010-08-26 07:09:58 -0500 Report

i love food too, then i ran across this little tidbit and it made me think = don't live to eat rather eat to live. changing my tune i am. good luck with your song.

I'm in Mississippi. Can you ship ribs that far? I fugure ribs once a year won't hurt me.

Harlen 2011-05-28 19:29:38 -0500 Report

But I dont know if I can eat them only one time a year
but if you where claser I would make some for you too

scribbles 2011-05-29 06:36:23 -0500 Report

You are such a sweetie for that offer. The biggest reason I can indulge in something only once a year is - I would have it on my birthday! I am also pervert enough to like brussel sprouts.

RIBS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mmmmmmm… I miss the sweet pork and beans too… and the sweet potato pie that always went right with it… :-D I think my sugar's peaking just thinking about it!!!!

I'm with ya Harlen; Last month I cooked up batch of my mother's old recipe for beef short ribs. Thankfully the Pancrease behaved itself and didn't land me in the ER !!!!!

I can totally understand everyone's position on "cheating", and while I have yet to cheat really bad, I suspect that I will fold like a cheap suit on something, someday. The only thing I can think of is when I had a small piece of dark chocolate candy before Valentine's Day, and that's been it…thank goodness!

I used to love pork ribs (not beef though), but gave them up for my religion…still, it can be tough with friends who are happily up to their armpits in swine during summer barbecues; the smell alone is heavenly!

I tried really hard to let myself eat a slice of pizza this past Saturday…it was a small slice and I thought "Ah, heck, this can't be that bad", but I realized that thinking like that has gotten me into all sorts of trouble throughout my life and that if I gave in to the temptation with that slice of pizza, I could rationalize giving in each time that I'm tempted ad infinitum. So, I just pulled off the toppings of cheese, sauce and veggies, ate that and fed the crust to some happy dogs. It satisfied me (as much as pizza ever does, given that it's not one of my favorites anyway), and I continued on with my peppy little diabetic life!

Don't be too hard on yourself Harlen, we all slip up sometime, and personally, I think that moments like those don't just feed your cravings, they feed your soul!

I understand about giving in.I had pizza today veggie and broccoli,i felt pretty shi@$y afterwards. I understand it is all about portion control.I was weak today and I am sorry.Quitting smoking was easier for me.I swear I'm addicted to food, bad food.I quit smoking 14 years ago.I quit BAD FOOD 14 minutes ago, hahaha!!!!!

Roy531 2010-03-15 17:01:14 -0500 Report

2sweet, I know exactly how you feel, my mother bakes everything from scratch and she makes a banana pudding to die for, and if I ate any probably would, and a coconut cream pie, both would put you in the hospital. but oh, what a way to go. Quit smoking too a few years ago.

Monalisa 2010-03-15 19:42:52 -0500 Report

Well here is my confession…I "stopped smoking" 4 months ago…Went to a birthday party saturday and gave in to all the excesses I smoked a pack, drank alcohol a lot and even danced the whole night with my neuropathy pain!! didn't even remember my BS…

But today!!!!! Oh my dear lord!! Back to reality!!! OUCH!!!

I have been craving one of those great big cinnamon rolls for a week or so now…My husband goes to the grocery store a little while ago, and brings back this big cinnamon, nut pull a-part something or other…I want some so badly I can taste it, but I don't know if I should…Help - 1/9th of it has 29 carbs…

rij061258 2011-05-28 18:32:50 -0500 Report

how many grams of sugar? the sugar will hit faster than just the car bs i think. i keep my snacks below 10grams of sugar and don't have any real problems. but will depend on how non sugar carbs hit you.

I'm going to brag a little. I went out to dinner tonight, it was my brother's 80th birthday. We went to a Japanese steakhouse, where they cook the meal at your table. I had steak and chicken teriyaki. I ate the veggies and meat, did not touch the rice. I ordered some ice cream, decided to try green tea ice cream as it sounded different. It wasn't that different, had no taste at all. So I had maybe 3 spoonfuls, and that was all. I even passed up the chocolate birthday cake. I did have one glass of wine. I think I did remarkably well.

You did Donna you did very well way to go
I love cake too dont know if I would be able to give it up????

I hear you there Harlen. That is one of the things I miss the most. Never big on candy but love cake, muffins and pies. Haven't had any of those in over 3 months now. Up until then, once a month I would buy 1 slice of cake or a brownie and eat half one night and then the other another night.

cc9 2010-03-15 05:30:25 -0500 Report

thats awesome donna. living with diabetes doesnt mean we have to live in a hermetically sealed environment where we cant make choices.

way to go Donna! especially putting down the ice cream when it didn't hit the spot…so often I eat something anyway and then kick myself later for eating it when it wasn't even worth it!

Good for you :)
