Hello friends,
I would like to ask for your prayers. I am having surgery tomorrow morning to remove one of my parathyroid glands. I am nervous. I do not like going "under" for surgery. Scary!

Hello Friends,
Just wanted to give you a quick update. I received the pathology report from the doctor on my parathyroid and it was negative. I wasn't worried because the doctor never thought it was, but it is always nice to hear "officially" that it was okay.
Sal :)

Great news. I know there is always a nagging worry even if you're sure it's OK.

What a relief, huh Sal. Know the feeling, that nagging fear below the "just to rule it out"…Thanks for letting us know everything is ok! Hugs

Me too! That "not knowing" can just eat away on us, my cat scans turned out OK too, the lesions in my lungs really haven't changed that much in 6 mos.!! PR

My goodness, my thoughts and prayers are with you…It is scary to go under, but have faith and everything will work out just fine!
Is it outpatient or will you have to stay in the hospital for a few days? Please keep us posted on how things are going!!

salmanda 2010-02-27 17:49:54 -0600 Report

Thank you Priscilla.
I stayed one night in the hospital, but I could have gone home. I chose not to because I would have had to go back in the next day for blood work, I live alone and was worried about being alone after anesthesia, and I would have had to get someone to drive me in again to the hospital. What a pain, huh?
I am doing better now…4 days after surgery. Less pain and just tire very easily.
Sal :)

So glad to hear you are doin alright. Been offline for a while so catching up on everyones news today while waiting to hear how my Mom is doin. This place is amazing (as shown by all the well wishes here) Best of luck on recovery. Take it easy and get plenty of rest. Had similar surgery a couple of years ago so I understand how hard it is. God Bless you!

salmanda 2010-02-26 07:50:14 -0600 Report

Thank you Becky. The nurse in pre-op told me that it wasn't going to hurt much because there weren't many nerves in the neck…wrong! The nurse during my hospital stay said it does really hurt…she has seen many patients with the same surgery. I was also led to believe that it would be just a few days recovery…not! I found out yesterday it is 2 weeks! Obviously they were either trying to downplay the whole thing or just had never had the same surgery! I would rather have gone in knowing/expecting what I "got".
I hope all goes well for your mom. She is in my thoughts and prayers.
Sal :)

I would rather know the truth too, so one can prepare! Hope the pain subsides soon and you are back to "normal" Hugs, Pat R

I got home yesterday late afternoon. I was so sleepy, I just couldn't get on the computer. I am more awake today, but still sore. My neck is swollen and real ugly looking! Looks like I had a run in with a slasher! lol Thank goodness scars fade in time.

Was there a malignancy? I don't understand your type of problem—when you feel up to it, could you explain it to us, the problem and how they cut it out—or whatever? Get your REST and Love to YOU!! PAt R

salmanda 2010-02-25 13:11:27 -0600 Report

Hi Pat,
There was no malignancy that I know of however they always send what they take out to pathology. Everyone has 4 parathyroid glands which are located behind the thyroid. They do not work with the thyroid. They do regulate the amount of calcium we have in our blood. I had one enlarged parathyroid that was causing my blood calcium levels to be too high so it had to be removed. When the blood calcium levels are too high, it can cause many different problems throughout the body like osteoporosis and kidney stones to name a couple.
I also had a nodule on my thyroid removed. It has been there for years, and the doctor just took it out because of it's location and he was in there anyway.

Thank you for your explanation. I think you posted something awhile back, but it slipped my mind—-I find medical problems interesting, even if I haven't had it. PR

God Bless you, Sal—-Keep us posted on your surgery and recovery. That is one surgery that I know little of.

I still have not heard from Turtle after her knee surgery, will see if I can find her no. and try to call her—wish that I had had the forsight to get the hospital's name and phone. PR

Good luck to you, you will do fine. Just don't worry about how they tickle your feet and draw cartoons all over you while you are out. only kidding. Prayers are on the way.
