Diabetes Cruise Anyone?

We've been talking about cruises…so cruise ships used to give discounts for groups…1person free for every 16 booked or a free cabin for 32, I think…or was it 1 cabin for every 16 people? Anyway…if we want to do a group cruise, we could take whatever free cabins we get and use the $$ as a discount for everyone. I would be happy to work with a cruise line if we could all decide on when, where and which cruise line…next summer or fall so we could save for it? Last cruise we were on, Carnival gave a great discount for Vets…and, we can open it up to friends and family. The more we have, the cheaper it will be, and the more extra's the cruise line will give us! With enough people, they might have a party for us…fruits, veggies and cheese.. :) And, I can ask since we won't have a travel agent commission the cruise line will have to pay, if that money could also be funneled back to us…hopefully to pre-pay tips or something.

Hi everyone! I am new to the Diabetic World. My daughter was diagnosed on 10/29/10. I am a Cruise Specialist and own a CruiseOne Franchise. I have put together a fund raising cruise to help find a cure for diabetes. You can check out all the information at www.cruisefordiabetes.com We are also on Facebook…search for Cruise for Diabetes.

Rayt brought up the idea of a cruise or "convention" somewhere next year. What does everyone think? Try for a cruise again or do a weekend in some city? Lots of great cities…San Francisco, San Diego, Washington, DC, Savannah, Las Vegas, LA, Miami…let's talk!!! S2

imsuzie2 2010-03-15 02:48:44 -0500 Report

I was thinking, instead of a cruise, anyone think they might like to go to Savannah, GA to visit Danni? I was thinking late April or Early May would be nice weather, and it might be more affordable…any thoughts on that?

cc9 2010-03-15 05:17:06 -0500 Report

suzs i am thinking about doing that when i am in canada. other than the periods of my conferences in halifax and toronto i have time to juggle around. have not made too many plans as i want to embrace whatever and wherever the road and trip takes me. so i guess i can leave from montreal and go down the east coast of usa.

imsuzie2 2010-03-16 04:44:46 -0500 Report

You can scout it out for us. I think a trip in June might be to early for a bunch of us to descend on Danni, but one of us…Go for it (and make sure you have GPS).

imsuzie2 2010-03-03 03:57:50 -0600 Report

OK, 2011 has votes…I Like October, so traveling thru cold places should not be a problem. January might have snow problems for some travelers.

Have we decided where yet?

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-03-03 17:31:11 -0600 Report

Oct sounds good…down here in the South their are still plenty of warm days in Oct.

Susie624 2010-02-26 15:53:49 -0600 Report

The way I understood it it is a rebate for the lowest fare booking for one ticket on every eight cabins booked so if eight were booked it would be one ,16 would be two ,24 would be 3 and so on

imsuzie2 2010-02-26 22:57:43 -0600 Report

That sounds right…so I would subtract the free cabin and hopefully any agent discount would also be subtracted if I go directly thru the Cruise line. We need to decide when, where and see how many want to do it!

2011 works well for me. It allows everyone time to lose weight in preparation for the bathing suit issues. LOL You know someone thought about it before me!

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-03-04 00:15:07 -0600 Report

That is one thing that my mom did get onto me about, everytime I got a sunburn (and I got sun poison one time), I didn't hear the end of it. Crossing my legs to, she would tell me to cross my ankles - fortunately I don't wear dresses or skirts.

LOL I don't know what a bathing suit is either, Suzie. I wear surf shorts or something of the kind, but sometime a bathing suit top; I have to many scars to cover up.

imsuzie2 2010-03-04 06:55:27 -0600 Report

I would rather have to cover scars than fat! After my husband had his kidney removed, I challenged him to see who's scars were longer!

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-03-04 16:23:04 -0600 Report

Well it's natural to trade what you have for something else, like people with straight hair want curly; thin hair with thick, etc. I can't get rid of the scars, they're not that deep but there's too many.

imsuzie2 2010-03-04 20:42:00 -0600 Report

Trade you my fat for your scars, ok? You are young and can lose it easily. No one wants to look at my body, so the scars will just make friends with the ones I already have. Deal? It would be nice to see what a bathing suit is again! LOL (lovingly said Danni)

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-03-04 21:00:41 -0600 Report

You got yourself a deal! You're scars will be making a ton of new friends…lol my ex actually thought about nicknaming me "Scar" but it reminded me of the Lion King, and Scar was mean!…I'll lose the weight (I'm not big on exercising though lol), you can work on fading the scars and we will switch back :) Sound good!?
:) Danni

imsuzie2 2010-02-23 05:25:22 -0600 Report

Ok…Where do we want to go?

Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska? Mexico and Caribbean are pretty much year round. Alaska from around 6/1 thru around 9/30. I think Hawaii would be too costly.

Mexico: 1) Leave LA,SD or Long Beach 7 nite cruise to Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas (Depending on tides) and Mazatlan (unless that itinerary has changed). Or going from Acapulco to LA (maybe SD or LB) so stopping at Puerto Vallerta, Mazatlan and Cabo.

Caribbean: To numerous to try to list, but there is the Eastern or Western Caribbean, going to different islands. Some start in Puerto Rico, so can go deeper into the Eastern Caribbean, or the Western Caribbean would leave from Miami, Ft Lauderdale or even Galveston (I believe) and does Cancun, Cozumel and probably Cayman (Grand Island).

I think Susie nailed hurricane season June 1 thru Nov 30 in the Caribbean…sometimes in Mexico (Cabo has been hit a few times).

Alaska usually goes from Vancouver to Seward with stops in Sitka, Juneau, going thru glaciers, and more (been too long) or the reverse. Mike and I found we saw more on a 3 hr cruise in the bay at Seward than we did on the cruise and a fly between cities might be the way to go…but we will do what all decide by majority.

Something to think on, and then we can respond on cruise choices # 1 and # 2 and if you want to add a third, that too. Then we can also do Month choice # 1, # 2 and # 3 and I can start a tally sheet. Oh, this sounds like such fun.

Cruise lines…Carnival good for 1st timers and pretty much own RCCL, Princess, Holland America or if you have a cruise line you want, again, I am open to all.

Lastly, most are per person, double occupancy. Some cruise lines will match you or give you a guaranteed share, no room mate found, you get the cabin alone, but does not happen much. Some cabins will accommodate a 3rd and/or a 4th, and those cabin rates can be less than double occupancy. And lastly, inside (no window) or out (window) or even balcony…oh, mid-ship and lower down tends to be the smoothest. More up front can have motion from going forward thru the water, and more back, vibration from engines. One of these days I will learn for, aft, starboard and port. LOL

if we go to Mexico or Caribbean will have to have passport.

donna13 2010-02-23 13:20:03 -0600 Report

I'm going on a cruise to Mexico next month and was advised to be sure and bring my passport.

imsuzie2 2010-02-24 05:43:48 -0600 Report

There is a passport "card" also available to use if you leave from and come back to an American port on a cruise. We used it leaving from SD for a 5 nite cruise to Ensenada and Cabo, coming back to SD. I am thinking it was around $20 where a passport can be near $100 these days. Not sure of costs as it was 2 yrs ago…

TanyaG 2010-02-22 14:48:48 -0600 Report

That would be amazing!!!! In the 11 years since I became a mother I have not had a vacation. My husband and I didn't even get a honeymoon.

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-02-22 15:43:33 -0600 Report

I'm right there with you Tanya, well kind of…I don't have any kids, but I might as well and I haven't been on an actual vacation since spring break, that was about eight years ago.

alanbossman 2010-02-22 10:09:56 -0600 Report

Yes would be nice and lots of fun my wife and i have done a few cruises. let me know when and were. I believe the hurricane season is over in nov. not sure when it starts i think around may.

Best wishes

imsuzie2 2010-02-22 01:24:36 -0600 Report

CC, I don't know if we can all save money to go so quick. Any chance you would delay your trip to next year, since it isn't booked yet? Cost wise, I think Caribbean or Mexican would be cheapest. Alaska is more expensive as is Canadian…Hawaiian is also expensive…Since I have cruised a lot, it doesn't really matter to me where we go. Is it price or place we want to start with?

Time…for us, October or May are good months. I forget the time frame for hurricanes, since we don't have them here in NV (or CA). I think they run thru August or is that when they start? What does everyone think?

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-02-22 11:10:45 -0600 Report

You mean of '11 right?!? Hurricane is August and September, I believe. But it all sounds good :)

Susie624 2010-02-22 14:59:35 -0600 Report

Hurricanes are June first thru November thirty. The first thing decide where, then the cost idea and then decide when ,by that time you would have an idea how long it would take to save for the trip.

imsuzie2 2010-02-23 05:02:30 -0600 Report

I agree. Place is first, then time frame which helps to decide on cost. Sometimes off peak time gets better rates.
