when you are watching your calories and carbs, dont forget to figure in what you drink in a day. People often count only what they eat and not drink. Drinks have cals and carbs too. So make them a part of your calculations when you keep your journals. You would be surprised at how many cals and carbs you consume in a gulp!

Hi DonnaAnn,

I drink 3 cups of coffee in the a.m. I use artificial sweetener. "0" calories/carbs. Home made ice tea with artificial sweetener. "0" calories/carbs. I also drink all of the bottled water I can get my hands on. Flavored and fizzy all the better. Also "0" calories/carbs.
I totally avoid "all" of the other stuff. I prefer more natural anyway. So far my kidneys are still working great! And my AC1 was 6.1 on Tuesday.

I drink tea and/or coffee in the morning. I need something warm to start my day. I never did add sugar or sweetener to either one.I have a worse vice, in my coffee I put only creamer. That has to be powder. I have cut down drasticall on the amount since I was diagnosed.

Yes drinks do count! I used to drink only diet drinks thinking they were OK. Well, what with aspatame and unprounocible chemicals etc I ended up going "cold turkey" and quit drinking anything but water, sugarless tea, and occasionally water processed decafe coffee. Guess what! I don't even miss my diet colas. I feel better and have begun to lose weight. What a winnng combination LOL.

Hi Elfin, I know what you mean about the aspartame, but I have to have some kind of sweetener. I quit smoking cold turkey, I gotta have my sweetener. lol

These drinks not only have calories they have other things you may not need.
I love the green tea with citrus—-o calories,—0 total fat,—60mg sodium,—0 carb,—0 sugar,—0 protein.Now there is Aspartame,acesulflame,yellow & blue coloring,phenylketonurics—?
phenylalanine—? Please tell me what can that be good for?

Here is a link you should check out. It is a list of all food additives and how good or bad they are for you.
It is very eye opening. Make your own green tea and add what you know to it, then you don't have worries.

Gabby Thanks. Imusually make my green tea fresh. But I thought it was cute to have something in a bottle. I checked out that web site and one of the first things I saw was that big word acesulflame? or something like that . I will never buy another bottle of that drink. With the additives and dyes.it is dangerous.
again thank you

My only caloric daily drink is soy milk, and I found it frustrating when they removed my brand that only had 4g of carbs per 8oz. I went to to another brand but it had 10!! So I have weaned myself off the lite vanilla to unsweetened and I am back to 4 carbs per serving again.
Don't fake yourself out with diet drinks either. They don't have the carbs, but they are loaded with all kinds of chemicals and nasty things that can do worse things than increase your carb counts.
DonnAnn has another discussion posted on hunger and how thirst is often mistaken for it. She suggest drinking water. That is the best thing for us all the way around. Once you decide to give up the diet sodas, sugar free ice coffee and bottled teas, you will find after a while, you don't even miss them.
Then you can focus your math on what counts...your meals and snacks.
