Music : Does it help you ?

Does anyone listen to music anymore ?

I listen to all types of music based on my mood, I prefer Jazz, Classical Orchestration and Love songs of every genre.

I was just wondering does music have that same nurturing, calming, soothing effect on others that it has on me ?

What about you, does music calm the " Savage Beast Within ", and if so, what artist, what genre, what's your favorite ?

I haven't had the chance to listen to it, but I can imagine that it is, she wowed an entire world, and did it so modestly, doing what she loved doing !
I will definitely listen to it, keep enjoying your music, sing along, keep your spirits up !

Calming words, a soothing voice, the right atmosphere, relaxation from all the stress in life, it all sets the stage for a peaceful moment until there is a uninvited guest knocking at the door (Reality) !

Lock the door, put the music on and enjoy it !

That was their album "This Desert Life" one of my all time favorites…Although i gotta admit that that "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" is another favorite of mine…

ooo yes I'm one of those who still listen to music.
I love Queen , Elton John , Abba songs (my best is Dancing Queen when I need to cheer up) , Bon Jovi , Chris Isaac , also lots of slow songs from the old times and more and more …

MAYS 2010-02-17 03:04:47 -0600 Report

Liz, your infectious Smile, Warmth and Attitude brings so much Joy to others, what could possibly bring you down to the point of needing " Cheering Up Music " ?

Looking at your choices i see that you have great taste in music, ABBA's " Dancing Queen " will turn any frown into a smile, just as your words and advice here on this site has done for others :-)

Lalalalalalalalalala I will surviiiiive:)
God bless Gloria Gainer. She wrote this song for me certainly :)

I went to school with and was friends with her nieces and nephews as a child, I met her once as a child when she came to visit them, " I will survive " gave millions of women strength and rightfully so, it should be played more today so that it could do the same now as it did then !

wow what a big chance you met her , you're so lucky.Do you know what's the best feature of this song ; it's like a joker , you can sing this song for any situation hmmm such as ; marrying , divorcing , cooking , working , even driving :)

MAYS 2010-02-17 04:31:42 -0600 Report

When I met her it was no big deal to me then, I was young and her nieces and nephews were like, " Oh, that's my aunt Gloria " and that was it, later in life you realise the magnitude of it and yes the song covers so many aspects of everyday life, a true motivational tool that helps to raise one's self esteem !

Hey Birdy, we have something in common - We're both not good drivers lol and like to sing our hearts out (maybe singing is a distraction).
When you sing that song Birdy, what are you thinking about? anything specific at times??
I think about my troubled past and my will to move on and fight and survive every struggle that comes my way. I don't think about it singing to a person, but a situation.

hey Danni , I knew that I'm not alone in this planet :) I was thinking that there must be other traffic monsters :)
Nowadays I'm singing it when I see the highway exit :)

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-02-16 22:11:31 -0600 Report

Music covers all emotions for me, I need music like I need insulin…
The only problem is that I listen to music even when I know I shouldn't be. For example…
When I am feeling down and depressed I listen to music that "understands me", like 3 Doors Down album Away from the sun, Evanescence, Sarah McLaughlin or Blue October OR I'll do opposite and put on my christian music like Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns-this music calms me down and reminds me I'm not alone and everything will one day be okay.
My ANGRY cd is Linking Parks album Hybrid Theory
When I am missing my niece I listen to all of her songs, that's bitter sweet.
I like upbeat songs that I can act like a fool with and sing to the top of my lungs (I cant sing). Like I've listened to the Beatles since I was 10, Pink (she's my girl), Dave Mathews Band, Live, Simon and Garfunkel, Tayler Swift, the song "Downtown" and a little bit of this and that.
(I love almost oldies)

MAYS 2010-02-17 02:39:28 -0600 Report

Danni, you are a true mood music personality !
That's beautiful because it allows for you a broad musical spectrum … now let's discuss and define this " Almost Oldies " tag … (Mays) !

I love music and just about all types with the exception of country. Just can't seem to get into it. R&b, Jazz, Blues, some Hip-Hop, Raggae, and Classical. Music tends to soothe me, to calm me, to relax me, and to uplift me. Some of my favorite music is the ole school R&b classics (Earth, Wind, & Fire, Commodores, Maze, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Temptations).

MAYS 2010-02-17 02:33:00 -0600 Report

I love your choices, especially " The Temptations," the epitome of " Cool," no ( Manhattans or O'jays ) on your list ?

I played electric bass in country / western bands back in Iowa before my stroke. But now my left hand doesn't function well enough for stage performing. In recent years, I've become very fond of smooth jazz and blues. And, of course, gospel.

lily54 2010-02-16 18:51:52 -0600 Report

Do you play for your own relaxation and enjoyment? That also helps me if I just sit down and play me horn just for me.

MAYS 2010-02-16 18:56:01 -0600 Report

Electric Bass and smooth jazz listener,
So you're familiar with Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Wayman Tisdale and Marcus Miller among others.
Have you ever played a Double Bass (Upright Bass) ?

Elrond 2010-02-17 00:23:45 -0600 Report

I did play upright bass a couple times with a friend's bluegrass band where they didn't allow electric instruments. However, I had already been 'spoiled' and found the upright to be a lot of hard work. Also, many bluegrass bassists use a 'C' string and that confuses me. Standard electric bass strings are E, A, D & G.

lily54 2010-02-16 16:09:05 -0600 Report

Music is very calming. I play in a community band with people who are between 18 and well into their 80's. My husband tells me that if I am having a bad day and go to practice for band, when I come home I am a completely relaxed and different person. Yes, music definitely helps me.

MAYS 2010-02-16 16:25:25 -0600 Report

I agree lily. I like to mess with the guitar and I am learning piano too, lol starting with Beethoven. It's very relaxing and gets my mind off all the crap around me.

MAYS 2010-02-17 03:17:57 -0600 Report

Beethoven's greatest orchestral works came into being as his hearing began to deteriorate eventually leaving him deaf to the outside world but at peace with his inner self and his love for music, find your inner peace and nurture it, you have a beautiful life ahead of you, recognize it and enjoy it !

I love classical music. Beethoven; in fact, is one of my favorites. Also, Mozart. I also love opera and have been to the Met a few times over the years.

MAYS 2010-05-22 11:00:12 -0500 Report

That's wonderful, my favorite composer's are Tchaikovsky, Bach as well as Mozart, although I listen to most of them, as much as I frequently visit NYC's Jazz clubs, that I would also return to the classical establishments as I did in my youth with my teachers.
Now that I think about it, my life has really changed !

lily54 2010-03-01 10:41:19 -0600 Report

Music is one of the best ways for me to relax and forget about all of the things that are bothering me. When I am either listening to music, or playing my horn all the bad just leaves. I know am the director of a new choir at my church and I am thinking about taking some piano lessons also.

Music helps me to relax and ease tension. Good for my stress too. Love classical, and show tunes, golden oldies and country, Of course being From Oklahoma would have to like country. This is where some of the country stars come from.

I was born and raised in Oklahoma…even went to High School with Garth Brooks, and I HATE the majority of country music. Always have. Though, I don't mind some occasional Reba or Carrie Underwood. Being an Oklahoman doesn't guarantee we'll be country fans, but I will concede that there are a lot of Oklahomans who are fans of the genre!

I'm a strange bird. Music has never been one of my loves. If I do listen I prefer Jazz, golden oldies and the blues, not rhythm and blues, it's too loud. And of course show tunes. My boys are all into music, mostly rock, my girls, not so much. I've always wondered if it is a gender thing.

MAYS 2010-02-16 11:32:40 -0600 Report

I don't!! Christmas have never been a good time of year for me..Everything bad that has ever happened has happened around Christmas..

But i LOVE music.. always something playing.. Like everyone else it depends upon my mood.. I do not like Country and Western or Rap.. other then that i can listen to everything.. My mainstay is Blues though!! I Love the blues!! I am 56 years old and have really gotten in Lady GaGa as of late also..I love that she does her own thing.. My Daughter does not like her and states that she can't get by the weirdness.. It's like i tell her what is weirdness to you is money in the bank to her!! it's not like she invented it.. Alice Cooper in the day was every bit as bad!!

MAYS 2010-02-16 11:27:01 -0600 Report

Blues, Soul and Country music tells stories about life experiences, if we listen to the words, we can relate to it.
Weirdness does sell just think back to some of those who decided to be different, Kiss, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne among others, it's about the money !
