"Diabetes turned out to be a gift," she says. "It gave me strength and toughness because I had to face reality, no matter how uncomfortable or painful it was."

Diabetes is worth controlling, it can rob you of life and happiness if you let it, or you can rob it of the control it has on you !

When diagnosed I took this very seriously. I started to research as much as I could on the Internet. I found people who have controlled this thing and I took advice from those who have succeeded. My A1C went from 14.1 to 5.9 in about 4 months. Last month it was 5.4. I figure it’s a lifetime of doing what I do now. I figure to be testing everyday for the rest of my life. On Dlife I have read lots and lots of posts of people who got there blood sugar under control and went back to there old way of life and one day they wake up with blood sugar in the 400-500 range worst off than they ever were. I am not ever going to let that happen to me.

That's the key, it all starts with Action on your behalf. Awareness, Acceptance, Research, Planning, Implementation, Check ups and Follow thru, a lifelong procedure but well worth it !

too bad Halle is a crackpot and later posted that she weaned herself off of insulin and has since cured her diabetes.

The point of the story and the article was of one taking control of a life altering, life robbing disease after suffering a hospitalizational setback.
As a type 2 diabetic whose insulin producing cells are not destroyed, and who is taking insulin to assist the insulin currently being made by your pancreas you can wean yourself off of the insulin once your cells show signs of less insulin resistance.
You are never, ever cured of diabetes !

I agree,,,, but the point of my post was that she might not be the best "well informed" diabetic spokesman… similar to the Oprah debacle a few weeks ago… telling the public false information is not a good thing.

The reason I posted the link was that in her initial announcement she was a type 1 and has since weaned herself off of insulin and now considers herself a type 2 >> total crap, so either she was misdiagnosed or she is under the illusion she has done what nobody else can do and heal her pancrease :) and my issue is that she has stuck to her claim of type 1 healed magically to a type 2

I see what your saying and if she does think that she magically healed her pancreas than yeah, that's total crap. Than she is the one with the issues, not us, be happy about that. but we dont know her or her medical records so I'd not worry about that.

Halle was never a true type 1 diabetic, she was a type 2 insulin taking diabetic, her pancreas was still producing insulin and she required additional insulin injections because of insulin resistance due to years of ignorance concerning diabetes, it's symptoms and complications.

A lesson for all, take diabetes and it's complications seriously !
