Same thing with me! Got randomly diagnosed! Work out,eat well, and nobody in my family has diabetes! Even my doctor was shocked! Weighing in @ 110 with type 1! l understand your shock & your pain but life has to go on! Take care. =)

One of my good friends was skinny as a bean pole and in the best shape, always playing sports with me. After she joined the Air Force she got that same type of diabetes. I haven't seen her since than, but she is still in the best shape. Some things just happen, it doesn't mean you don't take care of yourself. Like Kira said, it could also be genetic. I know it sucks, but don't beat yourself up over it. It's not your fault, ok!?

There is no shape or size foe diabetes. There is family
history. If a grandparent or aunt or uncle has it, or a parent
there is a good percentage chance that you or your children
will have it. In my case it was a grandmother.

Thank You for all the support. I have been going through this alone since 2005. I have a 10 year old daughter, and a 9 year old daughter, and they are my main support system. I am so glad I found this website.

I'm male, of course, but I was fairly healthy well into my 30's when my pancreas just 'gave up'. I was treated as a type 2 well into my 50's when my endocrinologist upgraded me to a type 1. Along the way, I suffered many diabetes-related complications, including a stroke and a heart attack. Now I'm working much harder to control my blood sugar.

Diabetes is a genetic problem…so really you were just a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.

type 1 diabetes does not have anything to do with fitness level, activity level, or weight —- > its purely genetic and I would have to guess that the pregnancy probably made what was already a problem into a much larger problem. So first of all don't blame yourself, there is nothing you could have done, and this may be a blessing in disguise since you were diagnosed prior to having any major issues that might require hospitalization.

That said the unfortunate part is that since you are type 1 you will always require insulin to continue living. So take what thanks you can for the birth of your baby and make the choice to live for them.

good luck and god bless.

I was diagnosed prior to being pregnant…but…pregnancy kicked it into high gear and really brought out the gene pool…

Not sure if your saying you have gestational diabetes or if you had your baby and gestational evolved into a true diagnosis of Type II?…either way the genetic link is apparently there for you…so its best to focus on it now and stay healthy :)

Diabetes is not the heavy, inactive persons desease most associate it with…there's all body types, ages, etc…

Be well and take care of yourself :)

I am so sorry your going thrue this
But you know that if you got it you where always going to get it.A lot of peaple think that its what you do that makes you a diabetec but its just not.
We can bring it on faster by life style
and have we live.
If I understand this right is you had gestationl diabetes and after delivery you still have it?
The big thing to know now is that its not your falt.
Best wishes

Gestational diabetes does not just affect overweight or older people. It can be a genetic thing as well. My cousin was in very good health and a very tiny woman and she was diagnosed with it.
