Let's all do our part to help promote Diabetes Awareness for the next (2) two weeks.

As shown on the Oprah Winfrey show and as advertised on Walgreens Web site, the month of February has been designated Diabetes Awareness Month.

Walgreens is providing … FREE … Diabetes testing at various locations during the weeks of February 5, 2010 thru February 18, 2010.

Let's tell, suggest, recommend and if possible accompany someone to a Walgreens location to be tested for Diabetes.

What better way to promote Diabetes Awareness than having an actual diabetic pitching the cause, and best of all, it's … FREE !

At first when I heard this I thought it was no big deal. Then I thought about when I was first dx, of course I had none of the equipment to test my blood sugar. So what if someone wants to find out if they have the disease after hearing about diabetes. They wouldn't know how. I hope and believe this will be a very big deal in the long run.

Diabetes is a chronic disease meaning " Life Long ".

Type 1 is the result of failure of the pancreas to produce insulin, period.

For type 2 there is no cure only only prevention and it requires medical analysis on your individual situation and circumstances, commitment to controlling your diet, exercise and monitoring your health and well being.

Diabetes Education, Awareness, Commitment to Combating Diabetes and Action are all needed and have to be practiced, it's not easy but it is necessary.

Every discussion can be picked apart for it's pros and cons which amounts to personal opinion, nothing else, nothing concrete.

The important thing about the show was " Diabetes Awareness " at least someone is \ was willing to step forward and make an attempt to bring this disease and it's cause and complications to the general public and at least create (when the show ended) a discussion, awareness, curiosity and for some commitment to combating this disease on a personal or compassionate level.

Take the next step, rather than argue and debate, take the time to research, ask question, clarify facts and pass the results on, helping yourself, helping someone else, helping the cause !

Thank you, Oprah Winfrey, Walgreens and all those involved in making this happen.

Now it's our turn !

I also heard this on T.v. yesterday. It only is for 24 hr wal-greens and one's that have a wellness center in it. Not all wal-greens are participating. The majority, yes! Very excellent idea. I love this store. It seems they do the most effort when it comes to raise awarness on diabetes.

I just wanted to post that Walgreens does a LOT of work the American diabetes assoc. and with the charity for juvenile diabetes. I worked there for 3 years and they would do a lot to bring in donations. Car washes, bake sales, and they always sold those cards that you signed your name on for $1. I think our store raised $4,000 one year. It may not sounds like a whole lot, but if you can imagine how many stores are in the USA…that added up to a LOT of donations. So if you ever go in there and see those little donation cards be sure to sign one and donate $1. =) We used to have very generous people who would donate 10 or 20 bucks which were always awesome, I used to give them extra coupons and such for doing so.

I think it's pretty awesome Walgreens is doing this now too!
