Ok Guys, I don't snack during the day, inbetween meals, mainly because I don't know what is or is not a healthy snack…Does anyone have any good suggestions?

A diabetic friend of mine told me that dried fruit is easier on sugar levels if rinsed off first. Most of those are loaded and taste too sweet to me anyway. And rinsing the amount I need as I go makes them a little juicier too. I'm noticing that alot of my old favorite snacks are tasting way too sweet now. Makes it easier to change.

I feel like I've lost some weight from changing my meal and snack habits lately. Can't wait to get on an accurate scale. Yippeeee!

That's wonderful! I have lost weight too, and now I am just trying to keep it down…That's the hard part…I'm trying to find as many low carb snacks as I can…I get hungry, but don't really want to have a meal, so, I am trying to find snacks that are feeling, and not loaded with calories, and as low in carbs as possible… :D

String cheese, Fruit, carrot sticks, whole wheat crackers, Raisins, Sometimes I cheat and eat yogurt because I LOVE yogurt even tho I am told its a no-no to eat fruit with dairy. Pistachios are a big favorite of mine as well.

My best advice is buying some of those half-size sandwich baggies and filling them up with what ever you want to snack on that day. Like cut up and apple and put it in there for a morning snack, maybe fill a couple bags with pistachios or nuts and keep them in your purse so you always have a snack on hand. If you like nuts this is a good idea. I fill like 10 bags or so up and have them sitting in a bowl in my kitchen and i just grab one or two to have during the day to snack on when I need to and just stick em in my purse on the way out of the house. If you decide you want something else, grab an apple or carrot sticks, and leave the nuts in your purse for another time. They are nuts so they wont go bad anytime soon. You can always snack on them the next day.

Great idea on packaging snacks for use, Kira_xo! I have a box of snack baggies and never even thought about using them to pre-pack snacks. That would definitely save me a little time each morning as I stand in my pantry, bleary-eyed, without the slightest idea what I'm looking for, LOL!

I'm addicted to yogurt, I will have it for breakfast or lunch. What's wrong with mixing fruit with dairy? That's new to me, never heard of that rule.

Kira_xo 2010-02-08 05:44:02 -0600 Report

My doctor told me that mixing fruit with dairy apparently contains too much sugar? I forget the whole extent of it unfortunately tho. Also, this is when I was pregnant and had gestational diabetes. My doctor who is helping me with my type 2 never mentioned it..but yea better safe than sorry.. I DO still have fruit yogurt tho, only not as often as I used to.

holisticdebra 2010-02-11 19:39:54 -0600 Report

use real fruit not canned or yogurt at the bottom those have too much sugar. use plain add lemon, blueberries, bananas, strawberries, or raspberries the real thing. let sit over nite in frig n eat for breakfast or lunch. I add a little vanilla too.

Kira, the packaging of snacks is a great idea! I'm like OMG standing in front of the pantry or refrigerator not having a clue what I am looking for…

Ty! I find it super easy since I already have to pack snacks for my son, I may as well pack me some as well too! =)

Hi Sue i eat strawberrys or almonds or pickles and sometimes a breyers low carb fudge bar

holisticdebra 2010-02-04 20:12:31 -0600 Report

u might as well eat a small amount of real ice cream, homemade of course. strawberries n almonds r great!

London 2010-02-04 23:50:18 -0600 Report

A low carb breyers bar has very little carbs. I believe 9 per bar. They are very good and much better than regular ice cream.

I still don't have all the minutiae down around this stuff, but in general, I try to get the most "bang for the buck" when it comes to snacks — which means that I try to keep the calories and carbs down as much as possible.

I eat many varieties of nuts, raw preferably, but sometimes roasted and salted. I try to keep my portions anywhere between 1/8 to 1/4 cup, and not every day.

I eat multigrain Breton crackers, 4-6 with approx. 3 Tbsp. of homemade red pepper hummus.

1/4 to 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, or even a couple of cubes of whatever cheese I like. I detest string cheese though.

Raw veggies are always good, but for me, they are not something I want every day either.

I will eat the occasional Pure Protein bar as well…when I want something that will satisfy my hunger and stick with me for a while. They are not as spectacular, nutritionally speaking, as the Extend bars described by trey66, but they'll do in a pinch…I just watch what I eat in relation to anything like that.

I have never found it easy or particularly interesting to come up with snack ideas, so I know how you feel!

Thanks Harlen,

I am just lost when it comes to snacks…So, I just don't do it…I may have a light, lowfat yogart or something like that, but that is about it…And, I know how important it is to have a snack between meals…Sometimes, I only have two meals a day…I know I don't eat enough… That may be why my BS levels have been all over the place lately! LOL. Hugs, Sue

green apples help control my blood sugars. u know that old saying apple a day keeps the doctor away. well it's true for me. plus we eat other fruits n veggies as often as possible. we never use pre-packed stuff cause most or all of it is junk.

I also found that if I have no appetite, eating an apple can stimulate it. Don't know why, but it works for me. Especially in the morning when I'm never hungry for several hours. Probably not a good thing after sleeping.

I love apples, but most of them are loaded with starch…I know the granny smith apples are not nearly as bad as some of the others…What kind do you eat?

Danni-the-diabetic 2010-02-05 02:47:32 -0600 Report

I've noticed that too: reduced fat = increased carbs; low carbs = increase fat. I get Light stuff, like mayo, ranch and…ice cream. With light products the calories and carbs seem to be reduced evenly.
I absolutely love the Edys no sugar added mint choc. chip. it has 15 carbs and 4 grams of fat. I just tried it last week and it is the only brand of no sugar added ice cream that doesnt effect my sugars.
I like the sugar free jello; pretzels; baby carrots and stove top popcorn.

trey66 2010-02-04 16:43:42 -0600 Report

I have Extend bar, they help control hunger, avoid blood sugar lows and highs, count on energy that last. I eat these between meal and they taste good. Thet only have 1g net carb. The only place that I can find them is at Walgreen's. Peanut Delight and Chocolate Delight. If you like them you can get a sample pack for $15.99 for 15 bars by calling 1-800-887-2919 or visiting with free shipping. The offer expires 07/31/10.
