I wonder if any of you ladies can answer my question. I was not dx until I was 70, but I had 5 large babies. The last one weighed 11 lb, ll oz. Back then the only test that was given us was a urinalysis to test for diabetes. My tests were always negative. After my son was born they kept taking blood tests (I don't believe they had meters yet), before and after meals. I jokingly complained to my doctor that since I was extremely anemic (a result of the big baby) I couldn't spare any blood. He said the hospital was checking for diabetes, but he was certain that I did not have it - my baby was very healthy and strong, which he said proved my blood sugar was normal. I now have a relative who is an OB and he insists I must have had GD. My sister also had large babies, and when she was dx w/D2 years later, she was told having big babies is a sign that you will develop D2. Since my mother and 2 other sisters also had large babies and did not develop D2, I tend to believe that having large babies is in our genes. Have any of you had large babies before you were dx?
