Hello everyone. I'm new to the board, although I found out I am type 2 about 1 year ago. I'm 57 and a veteran. I get all my health care from the VA, and I'm real happy with the way they treat me. Well, I just wanted to say Hi to everyone…

Welcome, DonDon! I'm Type 2 as well, diagnosed about 10 years ago. I found this site only recently - never joined an online community before - and have really enjoyed it. As others have said, you'll find so many good people here. We're all in the same (diabetic) boat!

And maybe we SHOULD organize - they estimate there are 20 million diabetics in the US (one reason the drug companies pay attention…)

Hi! I'm a type 2 diagnosed about 7 mo. ago, but also a RN, my son's a type I for 8 yr, my mom (who died a yr ago) had an adrenal tumor so she matched my adolescent type I for roller coaster sugars! I've had a lot of professional & personal experience plus worked for a while on a research unit which included diabetes research (I once fixed one of the first manual insulin pumps with a paperclip & a pen spring when it was broken, but the only backup for an internal insulin pump patient whose internal pump had broken). That eased my journey, but I understand how difficult it is because I hadn't had a lot of experience with type I when my son was diagnosed.
My husband's retired military. We are fortunate to live near a base so go to the military treatment facilities& use Tricare. I thought it was going to be difficult because when we'd had to use his benefits before, it was a mess, but they've really improved. They do a better job than any civilian did with my son. I've been pleasantly surprised, but also realize how fortunate we are to live near a large base.
Looks like a lot of folks here are also military retirees/families, with a wide variety of experience, looks like your kind of place - mine, too!
Again, welcome!

A paper clip and a pen spring, that must have been an experience. You seem to be coping well. I admire anyone who can deal well with medical issues and their complications. I live near the largest military installation also. When I was AD, I heard people complain, but must confess I had no problems, st least nothing worth mentioning.

I just really want to thank everybody for making me feel so welcome. You guys really are great. I think I.m going to enjoy the fellowship here and get all the support I could hope for. I am amazed at the size of this web site. I think people like us (diabetics) must represent quit a block of voters. I wonder if we should organize. ;=)

Hi, Don,
Although I'm in Phoenix now, I'm originally from Iowa and spent more than 30 years practically within spitting distance of the Illinois border. Like you, I'm a VA patient and with them, you gotta be extremely patient to be a patient. The old saying about the army being 'hurry up and wait' must have carried over to the VA. They're supposed to mail me my meds but I'm constantly running out. I sometimes wait 6 months for a simple appointment. At least on this site, you can get fast answers and advice. Welcome aboard.
