Welcome! This is the best website for info & support. I've learned more from the wonderful people on this site than anywhere else. I was diagnosed 2 years ago. Didn't mean to ignore you :). We just moved from Calif to Oregon 2 weeks a go! Was picking up my 86 year old dad to stay with us for a couple of days. Happy Holidays to you!

Hello Liddy! I have been type 1 for 64 years and i am very healthy. I was diagnosed in 1945, when I was 6. If we have good control we can have long, healthy lives.

Ask all the questions you want, we are here to learn, and to help.

Welcome , Liddy—-we all have different stories, each of which I love to read and compare to my own piddly bout of diabetis——think stress, overweight and lack of exercise, tipped ME over that border line thing—-

Hey Richard, Congratulations on your well fought battle!! You are almost as old as I, 77 yrs, born in 1932 during the dust bowl days in western Ks.—-but I was fortunate enough to not have developed T2 until 74 years—so I was very fortunate—-even tho at first I rebelled, "Why NOW??!!" I had always felt that diabetis was the WORST—-hated to cut my sugars short and have to THINK about my diet—-BUT— I had skimmed by for over 50 years, borderline—but after I got over my snit, testing and eating more correctly has become a GOOD habit, dont think too much about it now! You are a good example to follow!!!

Again being fortunate, I can even say that adjusting to diabetis was harder for me, than fighting that cancer, that I didn't realize I had, then surgery and it was gone!! (We hope!) I told my Dr that cancer (for ME) was like a gnat on my nose! So THANKFUL!!! My dad died of lung cancer, and was leary of it too—-but—-what is the saying about fear——-sorry, can't think—-the only thing to fear, is fear itself! Is that correct? YOu know what I mean—-PR

Pat, you were indeed diagnosed very late in your life. That is great that you are taking your control seriously now.

I also had cancer in late 2002 and had radiation therapy in early 2003. It is all gone now, for both of us…we hope. I have things wrong with me but they are not necessarily diabetes related and they are not serious.

I hope both of us live into our 90's and enjoy our lives all those years.

Merry Christmas to another old timer!! Love those words, proves that I am as stubborn as THEY SAY!! haha—Just made it work FOR ME!!

Liddy—-Welcome! We love to have a new member to share with—-hope that we can all help each other!! STAY WARM this Christmas Eve, til COLD and ICY her in Ks, but didn't have the snow that some of you had, but we are warm and blessed!!! Pat R

Elrond 2009-12-24 19:35:23 -0600 Report

Pat, snow is practically unknown here in the Sonoran Desert but it's cold here… it actually got down to 40 degrees last night! hehehe I'm joking though, I grew up in the midwest where subzero temps are the norm this time of year. My cardiologist suggested I move away from that in order to give my heart a break.

Welcome Liddy!
I hope you can find the answers you are seeking here. Elrond said it all very well so I am not going to repeat everything he said. One thing I will repeat is to always go to your health care professional. We are not doctors, just folks who are here to tell it like it is for us. Everyone has a different experience with diabetes so we can only relate our own experiences. Mostly we are all here for support and friendships with others who understand what we are going through.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Sal :)

Welcome and I am so glad you have joined our family. Have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Elrond 2009-12-24 00:09:15 -0600 Report

Welcome, Liddy.
Don't worry, it just takes a while for everybody to see your post and reply. You are very welcome here and we're happy to have you with us. Pull up a chair and get comfy. Don't be afraid to offer your opinions in any of the discussions. Some of them degrade into disagreements but we're usually a fairly friendly bunch. If you have a problem or a question, just ask. You're sure to get an answer (or several). For specific medical information, be sure to ask a health care professional but most of the people here have been living with diabetes for a long time so we have many years of combined practical experience.

Welcome and Happy Holidays to you and your family. Sorry you have such a long drive to get to your doctors, but if they are helping you its worth the distance. You said everything just right nothing was wrong.
