Call any meter company and tell them you are a newly diagnosed diabetic…Ask them if they offer free meters…Every meter company will give to you free to obtain your business in strips…They make their money on the prescription for their own meter strips…so they will give it to you free…I have a new one coming from Accu-Check so I know they do it also…no charge to me…You can also obtain free meters at diabetic meetings and forums where they are passing on info to the public…they give them out :)

The meter isn't really the problem. I have one I haven't used in years because I can't afford the STRIPS! I'm a patient at the VA and they provide an Accuchek meter and only supply a limited number of strips for it. If I think my sugar is bad, I have to decide if it's worth skipping a test down the road to test now. There's no doubt she can obtain a meter free or very cheaply but most strips cost over a dollar per test. If you test several times per day as recommended, that adds up in a hurry.

That's the catch. Free meter, then buy our strips. All have given good advice. I think Wal-Mart has one for about 9:00, but not sure what they charge for strips.
Good luck, and welcome to the site. Lot's of help here.

Like Sarguillo, and Harlen said you can get free meters all the time. You can go on the net, there is always an ad on tv. I have three that I have gotten free, but I can't use them because I am on the pump, and my meter is connected to my pump. But it's good to have extra incase something goes wrong with mine, or a friend might need one, or even a family member. I try to get my girls to keep a close watch on their BS since I have now been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at my age with no warning. I feel that they are at a greater risk now, since diabetes does run in my ex-husband's family, and now mine. Oh well, we were talking about meters weren't we, not my family history. Sorry! I get a little carried away at times. Check it out, you will find one, or two, or three. Sue T.
