Ok…lets slow this down. First, if you're scared because your BS is high, drink some water, take a walk or do some other type of exercise for 15-20 minuted, drink another glass of water, then test. It should be down. As for drinking, I honestly don't know of any drinks that are 'less bad' for you than others. I have a glass of wine or a wine cooler on occasion, and my BS do go up, so I drink lots of water. I limit my alcohol to once a week, and only one drink then. Good luck! :)

I still drink sometimes…the only worry I have is that when you drink your body has a tendancy to spike, and then plummet…that is why you never drink on an empty stomach…and make sure you eat at least a snack before you fall asleep/passout…lol…I have a tendancy to drink Bloody Marty's because I have told myself that the tomatoe juice is good for me. hehe…if I drink beer then it's usually a MGD 64…low on carbs, but again its not really the carbs in alcohol thats bad for us…its the plummets…

Good Luck and have fun…don't over think everything…well I'm trying to learn that one myself!!!!

Blessed Be
Vicki

I have 1 or 2 scotches every night. My BG is under control and stay within my target limits even if I have 2. I would never have more than 2, nor would I have a mixed drink with sugar content. Scotch is an acquired taste and I would advise diabetics to acquire the taste :)

I am 80 years old and have never taken a drink or a smoke and I never will. My diabetes is under control without insulin, just oral meds. My husband is 83 and all the meds he takes is an aspirin a day and a vitamin…he has never drank or smoked. We have been married 60 yrs and have four daughters, 12 grandchildren
and four great grandchildren. I encourage you to try abstinence.

The sugar is the blood sugar problem in margaritas but you can get sugar free margarita mixes or you can make your own sugar free version.

Watch the carbs in the drink, don't get hammered, discuss with your doctor and you should be fine.

longhornmom,

The book, that I suggested to you, has a whole section on alcoholic drinks, since you like to have a drink once in awhile, is another reason this book would be beneficial to you. I too loved a good Margarita, and still do, and I have one occasionally! LOL… Like that phrase that you hate, in moderation!!!!

I too hate the "in moderaton" phrase. I am a tequila lover. Put a small amount of salt on your hand like a backwards C near thumb and pointer finger. Hold lime wedge in that hand and a shot of tequila in the other. Then either down the shop or sip, lick salt, and then suck on the lime. Like a margarita with sugar.

for sure…Not too many carbs in a margarita…its not a low calorie beverage but for that occasional cocktail its nice to have in hand…piece of cheese maybe in the other ;) lol

I drink alcohol including a margharita, now and then, but very slowly, a smaller amount than in prediabetc days and always with food to slow absorbtion. And if I have the sugar that comes with a margharita then I don't consume some other carbohydrates to stay in line that way. Pretty much I am having a "taste" of a drink instead of a drink. I also have a rule that if I "need" a drink, I won't have it - I don't need to add alcohol dependence to my list of problems. On the other hand a sip now and then adds to my quality of life so I "indulge". And lest I forget, even drinking small amounts, I never drink and drive.

The good news is you absolutely can partake in festivities…however…in moderation (i have come to hate that word lol)…ADA agrees with this provided your BS control is already good…When you drink however you are at risk for "hypoglycemia" so you should never drink on an empty stomach and remember too it takes two hours for just one ounce of alcohol to metabolize and leave your system…Consider a 2 drink max per day for a man, and one for a woman (Boo! lol)…So basically your lookin at 1 beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits…Not exciting…and not written in stone…so i think whatever you do drink you really savor it and take it slow…but atleast you dont have to say no :)

LOL you crack me up!!! I hear ya on that one, and it is hard because I am always at a social event or on a date or something, and I like trying different wines, margaritas are history, hard to go from a social butterfly on the town to putting on the brakes and all at once, Iam doing good on trying not to smoke.. Iam not a beer drinker unless at the beach etc and really cold, so now I guess I will limit myself with wine or like I do like coffee drinks but that would be another sugar issue. Hey but thanks and happy holidays!!! oh my I can just see new years eve lol

Cheers! lol…I honestly dont pass on a Margarita either…and the way I feel if I drink to much and have to deal with my BS after the fact isn't worth too many of them…but…I never say no :D hehe

I agree with this. You don't have to completely stay away from the drinks, but you do have to find out how your body reacts to them. If you're able to drink and check your blood sugars, then that's the best thing to do.
In general, mixed drinks tend to shoot BS up because they're mixing things with sugar (fruit juices, sugared mixers, etc.). My rule is this: the simpler the drink is to make, the less it hits your BS levels (just a generalization though).
And don't go overboard with the alcohol. As was mentioned, alcohol has a tendancy to lower blood sugar (usually, though I know some people go higher with certain alcohols). Though, everyone should watch how much they drink, not just diabetics :P

My Dr. told me that it was ok to have a drink now and then. Just be sure to eat before you drink. So, heh, I'm taking her advice… I have found a drink that is really good, and not that many carbs at all, if any. I have some vodka, zero sprite, and a little lime juice, and it is delicious! It is so good that you have to be very careful to not over do! As a matter of fact, I am having some tonight!!! And, I am enjoying it thoroughly!!!

I don't drink alcohol at all, so I don't go to bars, etc. If at a social function like a work or holiday party, you could always ask for diet 7-up, or diet cola, water with a slice of lemon, and nobody has to know different We (wife) have blasts at these functions, and don't need the alcohol. Not judging or preaching, just an idea. Good luck.
