What is the thing you had to give up for diabetes that you miss the most? I miss chocolate which I can't eat both because of the D2 and as it also aggravates my gerd. Sometimes when I'm in a restaurant and order a steak, I really miss a baked potato with everything. I know I can have a little, but I miss the old days.

This is a great question! I really, really miss eating a bundle of grapes for breakfast!! I now can eat maybe six at a time. *sigh* Also, as others said, freedom from being scared of the food you're gonna eat, it sucks! Hugs! Sheila

I was just diagnosed Celiac in November after 42 years with diabetes, and am having a heck of a time not cross-contaminating myself as I make food for the family! Do you still have gluten products in your house, or do you have a gluten-free house? I know I can keep both but really have to adjust how I prepare foods.

I miss being free from all the meds, doctors, "special" foods and counting but most of all I miss being NEEDLE FREE!!!!

For me its still just a giant slab of DQ ice cream cake. I only had it a couple times a year but it represents the lack of post dx gluttony.

On the other hand though I can handle small portions of just about everything else that I might want to eat.

My BGL has been steady BUT I am having more difficulty controlling my cholesterol, its still within normal range but barely as of October so I'm still tinkering with that.

I miss being carefree. I miss being able to diet and not get lows. I miss not being afraid. I miss just waking up and going on with my day and not worrying about shots, lows, highs, feeling bad, amongst other things.

Yes, I agree with that. Before I knew I was diabetic, I didn't feel to good, but at least now I know what is wrong, and can go from there, but it is harder than before, cause you can't be carefree like I was, my weakness is chocolate of any kind, I do still have some, but so far my suger is good, I do take meds. and drink pleany of water and that does help a whole bunch… Good luck to us all. I am so glad that I found this website and I will visit it often…

KungPao Chicken, fried rice hot and sour soup and an egg roll,as only my favorite Chinese resturant could make, but they had to close because of health problems. Others can do it but not as good as George and Margeret.

I don't miss the chips (considering I've worked with them every day for the past 28yrs! lol), chocolate has never been a weakness and breads I can live without. But, and I know this probably sounds weird…I really miss white rice!!! lol Yes, I've tried the wild rice and for some reason can not like the stuff!! A good dish with rice…(the kind with broccoli, chicken, stir-fried rice..anything!) is what I get cravings for. If I had willpower I'd do the one/two bite thing…but thus I have none!

I think what I really miss the most is being able to just have what you want without thinking about it, and counting calories, carb, sodium, whatever. I truly miss a nice fresh bag of Lays chips while watching tv.

You hit a tender spot with me when you mentioned CHOCOLATE! I mean a big block of chewy, gooey, non-sugar-free chocolate. Perhaps a Cadbury's Creme Egg. Of course, I'd need an insulin IV first but I dream about stuff like that.

You might want to quench your chocolate craving with some unsweetened chocolate almond milk. I have a small glass with a little stevia in it. You can also heat it and have a great hot chocolate substitute. It is very low carb and contains no lactose.
