I have had type 2 for 10 or so years and I noticed bad leg cramping as well. It was around the same time I started on cholesterol drugs. This might not work for everyone but I take one tablet of calcium when I got to bed a couple of times a week and that seemed to fix the problem. You have to be careful not to take to much because it can give you gal stones. Funny thing was I was taking it when I got tested for calcium and they said it was ok so I am thinking I was down and me adding it to my diet helped. Normally I can feel it coming on because during that day my muscles twitch (contract by themselves).

Drink lots of water…its cheap and it works…cramping in most cases is a direct result of dehydration. If you have other things going on…like pulsing or mild throbbing leg pain, thats another issue. I had cramping and cured it by drinnking at least 8 ozs of water daily. Pretty much thats all I drink is water. Stay away from sodas, diet sodas, or anything that is artifically sweetened. Aspartame, Splenda..etc…I know I love Diet DP. Excercing is great for you but again make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Tip: Diet sodas have been told to me that are OK to drink, however they have harmful chemicals in them…not to mention because they are sweet tasting they make your body think its sugar, therfore having elavated effect. I had higher BS levels by sometimes 30 points or more depending on the brand. The fact thats its a liquid makes it almost immediate effect…I do occassionally have a Diet DP, but I never drink it by itself and only once in awhile…not like before when it was part of my daily intake of fluids. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem but I take a water pill, but it sounds like the samething. So i would tell you to get some Potassium Chloride, an when you feel the cramp or pain take one an see if it doesnt go away, I take 3 to 4 tablets a week just so i dont get the pain in the legs in the middle of the nite. If the body is low on Potassium you will get pain in the mussles or cramps if you try to streach your legs.. Or eat a lot of banana`s for they are full of it…

You can drink quinine water. My aunt told me about that cure…an "oldie but goodie". I believe you can also get quinine pills to help with the cramping. I know there is nothing worse that having a cramp wake you out of a nice sleep!

I understand fully!!. Ihave very bad restless leg syndrome and you are hitting my symptoms right on the head. I go to a neurologist and am on different meds which helps me very much. Do some research on RLS and see if what they say applies to you. One thing that really helps is a relaxing bath. Yes you should quit smoking too. Good luck and keep us informed on how things are going.
