For my 2 cents, water is best. There is new info out there that too much diet soda can have negative effects on the kidneys (especially for women), so no more than 2 a day is best. I like Tropicana's 50% OJ, Ocean Spray Diet Cranberry-Grape and Cranberry-Raspberry Mixes, as well a a small can of Tomato juice…but that does have a lot of sodium in it.

Good luck. Also try dLife.com and the TV show Sunday on CNBC 4pm PST (check listings for your area). They cover lots of topics, even kids on some shows, and their chef has a recipe each week. Another good source of info.

How old is your son and what type of diabetes does he have? The advice depending on age and type will be very different. For instance for an adult type 2 milk is best avoided but for a 5 year old type 1 then the opposite is true.

he is 9 years old and type 1

You will be better off talking to his doctor. At that age a lot of the advice you will find online in places such as these are very much aimed at adults and managing diabetes for a child is very, very different. For instance I would avoid all the sugar substitutes being recommended and you will find that his carbohydrate needs are drastically more than that of an adult while he is developing. You may want to look for a child specific forum for parents like http://connect.diabetes.org/forums/Forum3884-... or try to connect with parents here.

Add a few drops of lemon to the ice cold water no need for sweeteners if he gets used to the tangy flavor

Crystal light! I swear by it. They have sooo many different flavors from lemonade to black berry tea to orange juice. Also, I'm not sure of his age, but they have sugar free Hawaiian punch packets that are just like the crystal light. I only know because I used to buy boxes and boxes of crystal light and the Hawiian punch packets to send to my husband when he was deployed lol. Walmart has their own brand of it that is cheaper and I'm pretty sure some of them are sugar free as well.

As you can see there is plenty that your son can have. The water is very good for him ,but if he doesnt like it just add chrystal light, comes in several flavors you can get already mixed or yo can get what they call on the go pack it is small packs that you pour in a 20ounce bottle of water shake it up and your ready to go.

Hello, 12 years a T2 here. Crystal light is good. Ice tea without sugar, There is sugar free Kool Aide now. If you go to walmart, they have their house brand of crystal light type drinks. But be carefull,t hey are full of food coloring. Known to change color of your bowel movements. Its just food coloring so dont freak out if you see purple, green or red. LOL. I drink tons of this stuff.

Oh, and be carefull of milk, it has its own type of sugar. Keep it to 8 oz at a time, no more than that. Get small cups. Also allow him to drink Apple juice, Orange juice, If making it from concentrate, add allittle more water. He can have just about anything that is out there as long as he takes it in moderation.

I have to try this. What ratio? and how much salt?

BIRDY 2009-12-10 16:07:37 -0600 Report

5 table spoon of yogurt and 1 cup of water I may say. I like it a bit thick. With this ratio it will be thick. You can add more water if you'd like.Salt upto you.1/4 tea spoon would be enough I guess. A more salty version is very good if you feel dizzy because of low blood pressure.
Hope you enjoy.

Water, water, water, Also some diet sodas, crystal lite is awesome. Best thing is to try different things, then test to see how it effects him. Others will have better info than me, but welcome aboard. How old is your son? T-1, or T-2?
