I am a nervous wreck, but first if you have a weak stomach you may not want to read this. What started out as a huge boil on my lower abdomen turned flat on surface with a little indentation like a wound would be, pure black and red around the area, plus been feeling quite sick, and pain there. Went to the ER and one doctor was talking of admitting me, the one taking over sent me home. They gave me IV antibiotics, fluids, and sent me home with Keflex and Bactrim. They really did not say much but Cellitus or something. Went to my doctor for smething else but followed up with him as well, he calls it a well now I forgot ugh, but like a wound anyhow. They said if got worse, come back..etc. Yesterday, it opened in a small area bleeding so I went back to ER. This time they said they suspect it's MRSA. I have heard horror stories about this, so now I am a wreck. They did up my Bactrim and added Doxicillion as well. Cleaned it well, told us to clean four times day…etc. They did not test for MRSA, which I do not understand. Also said I should follow up with the Wound Clinic. Now for those that do know, I have had wounds before, but not this. This is a HUGE area and if it break open oh my goodness…but really looking for advice, thoughts, comfort, what is MRSA really about. I looked it up some but I like talking with people on here, maybe someone has had it. Does it go away? Am I contagious? Could this be causing me to feel ill like I have? I know, I know some will say talk to doctor…and I will but it's Sunday…and I dunno when I can get in being I JUST saw him. I am feeling gross and dirty because of this. Please help me. Normally I would not just talk to anyone about something like this either and I am putting myself out there writing this to everyone but you are my family I feel.
Anyhow, love you all! Also, how would this or would it affect my diabetes? Sheila

I just wanted to thank everyone so much for your support and advice, it means so much to me. I feel like I always have someone…or in this case some people to turn to. I am calling my doctors appointment. Also, going to get some glove and bandages.
I have failed to keep up with my sugars lately, since I went off insulin and I need to get back on track, this'll be a great way of getting myself back into t
If this is MRSA it'll explain a lot. I have been ill, have cold chills, sleeping more than normal, etc. The doctor actually ran some tests, did blood work on Friday. Also testing me for Lupus for I had the butterfly mark and l. And this raises mu sugars right now it'll suck cuz today I have a cortisone shot in my knee that I have to have due to the pain and we all know what that means, raise in blood sugars.
Anyhow, just wanted to thank everyone for the support and advise.Hugs!!!!!!!! Sheila

Sheila, So sorry to hear that you are having such problems. I'm praying for you. Wound care through an ER can be kinda tricky. You have to go through a lot hoops to get it taken care of. Since you are still feeling so ill I would definately recommend that you go back in to get a more thorough examination. MRSA is EXTREMELY contagious and needs to be taken care of quickly. Is Ty helping with the dressing? Make sure that he is wearing a mask and washing his hands whenever he touches the bandage. The last thing you need is for you both to be down. I know that you are concerned with it being Sunday but I would definately not wait on this. My uncle had MRSA a couple of years ago and went the same route, the ER sent him home on Sat, went to his family doc on Monday. He ended up having to get the muscle cut out of the bottom of his foot, the infection had spread so badly. Be very careful with this. Hugs and Best wishes…Becky

This is the best and most succinct summary of treatment I could find:

Both hospital- and community-associated strains of MRSA still respond to certain medications. In hospitals and care facilities, doctors often rely on the antibiotic vancomycin to treat resistant germs. CA-MRSA may be treated with vancomycin or other antibiotics that have proved effective against particular strains. Although vancomycin saves lives, it may become less effective as well. Some hospitals are already seeing strains of MRSA that are less easily killed by vancomycin.

In some cases, antibiotics may not be necessary. For example, doctors may drain a superficial abscess caused by MRSA rather than treat the infection with drugs.

In your case, I believe it's past simple drainage. Get aggressive with any health care professional you can reach. By the way, this is definitely contagious. And it can become systemic, causing you to be ill all over and seriously affecting your diabetes. Until you get it under control, be especially careful with your blood sugar.

I have known people with MRSA, my wife and I were foster parents for a time and we had some children come here with it. It is basically treated with antibiotics such as vancomyacin and lanced at the dr's office. if it is MRSA it may have to be drained a few times to completely get it healed up. as with any infection it may cause your sugars to be up a little. follow up with your dr and with everyone praying for you you will be ok.
best wishes

My thoughts and prayers are with you, just hold on and go back to ER and don't take no for an answer. You will pull thru this just try and stay calm. Just make sure you do as your told when keeping it clean daily. Things will work out just fine for your a good person with a good heart. Please keep all your good friends here up to date on your progress.

lipse, either go back to er or go see your doctor tomorrow, donot delay because it can get very bad for anyone.Dont let it make you feel dirty, even tho it is adirty little thing it is contagious,my husband had it and while I was taking chemo I could not even doctor the sore, and I know of several people who have had to have surgery to get well from it so once again have it checked again and soon.

I know nothing about MRSA but I do know a friend in need when I see one. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. If need be go back to the ER today and try to get better answers because if you are feeling that punk something is going on. I suspect your bs will be a little higher than normal because of your worrying and having your body fighting an infection. Keep us posted.

I did a little research by looking it up on the internet. First of all, it is a staph infection (bad news). Second, the Mayo Clinic suggests that sometimes the best thing to do is to drain it (yes at the hospital) and that it does not always respond to antibiotics. I would further research it and go back to the ER armed with information and DO NOT let them put you off. I wish you the best. By the way, the Mayo clinic site that I was on had a picture of it and you can compare yours to the picture.
