Oh boy it is candy cane season again and I love candy canes. The curve in the cane has always been my favorite, as I shove the over sized piece of candy in my mouth. I end up chewing that part too. Oh yes, and I cannot forget peppermint ice cream. Fortunately for me, my freezer in my apt size refridgerator will not hold ice cream cartons! Ok I have had my moment to drewl…now back to reality. I am a t 2 diabetic and cannot pig out on candy canes any more. BUT!, I will let myself have ONE large candy candy cane this year.

Happy Holidays to everyone.

Oh thank you everyone for your input. I cannot do the sf peppermint. I am afraid of the sugar alcohol that I would get into. Better off to do the real thing but less of it I think.

PAT R. great idea about sugar free cocoa w/ red hots in the bottom of the cup. I love cinnimon too and that is a great way to get it.

I am so greatful for you all and everyone's ideas. Thanks again.

Spangler has a sugar free candy cane that is fairly low in the sugar alcohols and it tastes just like the real canes since they are made by the same company( but doesn't shoot your BG up). I tried them last year after I found them at Walmart and they were great. Sugar alcohols kill my stomach so I watch all of the sugar free food for them and usually just end up having a small portion of the real stuff instead. I got these for my Mom to try and ended going back for more for myself.

I had never heard of sugar alcohols—-seems like the harder we try to find the right thing, it has its own side effects- or off flavors——-PR

PAT R. - check the ingredients of anything sf. It will list sugar alcohol and it is usually rather high. It can shoot the ol bg sky hi really quick if you are not careful.

Here is a decadent chocolate peppermint treat that I permit myself to have around the holidays: Make sugar free cocoa according to package directions. Add a dash of peppermint schnapps (or peppermint extract if you don't want the alcohol and sugar in the schnapps); top with 5 - 6 MINI marshmallows or a TBSPN of whipped cream. The "real" cocktail is called a snowshoe; I just call this a way to sane way to satisfy my craving for chocolate and peppermint.

I have started fixing sugar free cocoa, then put a few red hots in the bottom before pouring the hot water over it, It suits my sweet tooth. Hugs, PR
