hello everybody-
my dr is sending me for a stress test onthe 4th and i have had one before but it was different because i was walking a treadmill then. this time he said the will be giving me somekind of drug to induce the needed stress level fo rthe test. what brought this on was an episode of chest pain over the thanksgiving holiday. i wasn't really alarmed but my dr seems to be. he said that because of the nerve damage I may not experience normal heart symptoms. any comments or suggestions, experience or whatever would be appreciated.

thanks
rw

There are 3 kinds of stress test now, 1 you run on the tread mill, 2 is the nucular test which is a shot an for a 30 seconds you think you just had a heart attack, 3 its the new one an its 4 min long, you get a dye shot an do x-rays an then they put a 12 lead EKG on an then they give you a shot that will take your breath away an you breath hard for about 1 to 2 min, an all this time you are on a treadmill at a slow walk then after they do x-rays again an in 15min the doc looks at the X-rays an tells you how you are doing. I do know this for the last one I had, last week, an came out OK> I do like the new one for its so much better than being knock out or running on the mill…lololololol this will give you a idea on whats out there.. for I have done them all…

i am scheduled for a stress test tomorrow and because i have PAD, I know i can't do the treadmill. I must admit reading your post makes me a little nervous but I know God is in control. This is a very helpful site and I so appreciated it.

I had a lot of trouble with my last treadmill stress test. In fact, the doctor stopped the test early because my blood pressure was dropping in an alarming manner. The next time they wanted a stress test, they did a CHEMICAL stress test. In this one, I simply stretched out on a table and took a nap while they used an IV to stress my heart in a controlled fashion. No sweat. Ask your doctor about that.

I am new to the site. Good stuff here. I am so glad to have seen the comments on this subject. I just received the appointment letter from my doctor today for a repeat stress test. I've had the treadmill test. Not so bad. Doctor's questioned the results, so I was scheduled for another. But this one mentioned nuclear medicine being used to "simulate" exercise. I had never heard of it and got a little concerned. Will it make me breathe deeply? Will I feel like I'm having an attack? What is it like?

I've had both kinds and preferred the tread mill. I felt anxious from the meds they gave to stress the heart, but they last a very short time.

Now, I am not one to lie about things, I just had one a couple months ago, same kind too…yes is a complete bore…but when I went thru a certain part it got quite scarey cuz I got very ill feeling and pain in the chest was quite intense, only to find out that I did indeed have a heart attack SOMETIME in the past, they could not tell me when though…not trying to freak you out but be real. I wish all the best and prayers are with you! Hugs!!! Sheila

First of all, welcome! Next, I have not had this specific test but I do know that your doctor has your best interest. My chest pains turned out to ber acid reflux. Regardless, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know the results.

Don't be terribly apprehensive about the test. I was but my last treadmill test nearly killed me. I've had a very weak heart for a long time and I've been scared of stressing the old ticker. the chemical test was so mild I slept through it. I got off the table and drove home. After that, I continued my daily routine as if nothing had happened.
