I think I have all my answers now! Finally!!! All because of a mistake in medication!!!

I saw my therapist/NP Monday. I told her how I was feeling (besides depressed). For over a week I was waking up at night quite a few times in a pool of sweat,I would have to take my shirt and wipe my face, that is how bad it was, hair soaked, lite p.j's soaked. She started asking me questions about it,finally she said she had to "Task" my Doctor about this as she thinks it was signs of me going into severe "hypo" episodes. I hadn't even left her office when the Doctor himself called my phone!! He said to stop the metformin right away, and to make an appointment w/him asap! I was surprised as I have not had a Doctor call me themselves!! About an hr. later the nurse called, made an appointment yesterday @ 2pm,very next day after this went down.

I went to my appt. yesterday, he said that he had hoped I stopped the metformin right away,I told him I did. He stated that unfortunately after getting message from therapist he realized he had given me too high of a dose to start off w/of the metfornim and I was having severe "hypoglycemic" episodes, he said he wanted me in right away to fix the problem as he was worried he was making me sick w/the mistake on dosage!! The Doctor put me on 500mg. of metformin once a day for now he said,he looked at my chart again and mentioned the "121" fasting, and other numbers that were documented. He finally stated that it was very tough to say if I am indeed type 2 diabetic right now or not, also stated that soon I will have full blown type 2 diabetes. I was prescribed a freestyle lite meter, strips, and, lancets!! He wants me to test twice daily, and, more if I am not feeling right. I was also told that I could call and make an appointment w/a nurse who would teach me about the meter and about diabetes. He was very nice yesterday, let me ask questions and tell him how I was feeling, finally!! I think this was only because he realized he had made a mistake on my medication and was afraid something worse could have happened, also the fact that when he heard how sick I was,w/the bad night sweats,trembling,etc..(was only 65 in house at night!) I think he took a little more interest in reading my chart!

All in all I think because the Doctor made a mistake on dosing w/ the metformin, he took more interest in looking at the whole picture as to what was wrong and finally looked at what was right in front of his nose!!

Darly I'm glad your doing better and I know how given the wrong meds can cause severe illnesses.A dr. once gave me demerol for my back pain and it started causing me to have a heart attack but they caught it right away while I was still in his care and they brought in a crash cart and took that med. away from me right away and noted it on my record. Please be very careful and may God Bless you with an abundant health and many good years of life for your family.Friend always Roger.

Me too!! Even tho I knew SOMETHING had to be wrong for my general feeling of just being SICK—I could not really explain it either, as I am very aware of how much my emotional health was affecting me—-BUT——WHAT Where??? 7 DRS stood inside my room as we all tried to take in the biggest surprise of my life—WHAT??? It still seems a bit unreal, but I am VERY THANKFUL that it was discovered in time, is now gone, and believe it or not,. BECAUSE of my VENTING, I FEEL BETTER__NOT WORSE!! Now all of you know some of my deepest secrets—-bet you didn't know that, did you? See, the sunlight and fresh air has now shed on the dark corners of my mind to say—-"what???Is that all that has been driving you NUTS most of your life??!! Thanks to ALL for listening and "getting it''—-I am not alone, and am really enjoying today, Thanksgiving day, even with my hubby and his upset tummy, didn't fix any meat—-it was OK, just boiled some sweet potatoes, chopped up fresh onions on them, opened a can of smooth cranberry sauce, and the one original thing that we dug from our small garden, 2 big Yukon Gold potatoes, mostly for him—-trying neutral things, (the harvest part!!!) and it FEELS SO GOOD!! YEAH!!!

Love to ALL, Pat R

Thank you all. I am feeling better today. I had a great time over my son's w/my other 3 son's,my 3 grandchildren!! I did not overeat as I usually would have done. My 31 yr. old son is a fanatic on making sure I am okay all the time! He sat beside me, when a glass of DIET coke was poured for me, he told me I had better not be thinking of drinking it, I better be drinking water,so water it was..haha.

This is my 2nd day on 500mg. metformin…yesterday post meal was 135, this morning's fasting, 125, post meal today was 154. I am feeling good so far, which is great if it continues!!

KD, I still have no idea as to what might have caused this, like you said I did not test when this was happening. To tell you the truth, it never entered my mind about sugar levels, I thought I had something seriously wrong w/me as this was something I have never encountered before, I was getting night sweats on and off for some time but not every night, and most certainly not like what happened that week…you always have good advice, and know a lot about diabetes…I just don't know what has really been going on. I did also say that lately I have been coughing a lot, especially in mornings w/ a lot of mucus, I just chalked it up to my asthma starting to act up after not having to use inhaler for sometime now…guess it's kind of a mystery to me.

I am so thankful for you, Darly!! And your son is to be appreciated for his loving support!! Happy days ahead!

The drainage, sinuses, cough with phlegm sounds like I was, still am, after they did that cat scan they discovered that I have lots of scar tissue from so many rounds of bronchitis, plus that lump in the left lung, think it is also scar tissue—-There is no rule that a person can't have more than one thing wrong at the same time.

Time will tell, I guess!! Pat

Thank you Pat! You did remind me, I have had a runny nose, stuffed nose etc…I know I do not have a cold at all. I have wheezing, and a lot of times can feel the rumbling in my chest/back…no fever either!

I am happy to hear you are doing so well, you look great in your picture!! Keep up the good work Pat, it had paid off for you!…Darlene ;)

My NEW pic was one taken before I went on my cruise to Mexico in 2005, have no recent ones to draw on. But I was HAPPY, (so depressed INSIDE but was Determined to NOT let it show—-you know, fake it till you make it, and it does help!! However, now I think that I can sincerely be my true self, and continue to smile, but with more inner support from God and Friends!!

Jack is sick with whatever too, like I was for 3 days, must have been a wee bug in with what seemed like me old enemy, GERD! But felt so wiped out for no more than what actually happened, but Jack hit him this morn about 4am—diarrhea, then felt wiped out—weak too, and now we are FINALLY getting so we can communicate, tell each other how we really feel, and it is so freeing!!

So we had a quiet, pleasant day at home, ate what I wanted, did get into a bit of trouble, ate white potatoes plus sweet potatoes, no meat—-hahah—Now why did I think I could sneak all of those potatoes on board without raising my BS—went up to 236, high for me, took only 1/4 of a small Glipizide pill and 2 hrs later it read, 56!! Oh, my—-there just doesn't seem to be any middle ground for me—-but will keep trying, even if at times I want to run and hide!! haha—As long as I feel free to admit it, I WON"T! at least that seems to be the way my mind works! haha—Thanks so much for your understanding and support and to realize that even if I feel cranky, I am still a good person—-just get tired like everyone else!

Darly, I too ran no temp, maybe a bit at a later period but that could have been due to my cancer—-Asthma, shortness of breath etc seems to create its own set of symptoms, hard to tell what is really going on till the ——hits the fan, so to speak!! BEST WISHES and do hope that you too can get to the bottom of your own problem!!!! I wish for you, energy and clearness of thoughts, and patience to hang in there, take one thing at a time, then try to solve your puzzle by a process of elimination——Now I had better go check my own BS, as it seems like it is to be my friend for life!! Sigh——Hugs, Pat R

Pat~You sound so positive and much happier these days!! I am so happy for you,not that it took being so sick with a misdiagnosis of cancer and losing a kidney, but the fact that you pulled yourself up and conquered a lot! I admire you for that. You are a great person with a heart of gold, always willing to help others.

I know I have to get very serious about my health, just by reading your posts I know I have to and I can do it!! I was similar to you many years ago when I just could not beat the depression, let my health go and did not care, which,at times ended me up in the hospital, not for medical reasons either!! It was no fun. Lately I have been feeling like I am headed back to those same feelings, I am determined not to let it get me though!! I am going to a friends for a week today, not far away, about 45 min. away, we always have so much fun & laughs, talks. When I get back I am going to make an appointment w/ the nurse for teaching me how to eat right, etc…I just get so confused easily, must be the ADD..hahaha!! Darlene

Hello Pat,I hope you continue to feel better and am glad the Drs are listening to you now. Hope your husband feels ok too.Stay sweet and God Bless you and take good care of you. I am still having the bad headaches but they can't find out what it is. they finally took a ct scan but didn't find anything. I told them maybe I NEED TO see a neurologist and they told me I still have to see my pc dr.and then get a referral. So I hope maybe another dr. can find out what is wrong.Love always and eat well and take good care of yourself.Roger

My own bad headaches ceased after I took Cipro for 7 days, not too sure why, the sinusitis seems so vague, not really stopped up, but they started to burn so guess the headache was just one of the warning signs that my sinuses were unhappy and were just getting started—-guess a body gets run down and it doesn't take much to zap you! Nighty Night!! I do feel stronger since my tummy has settled down, now Jack is ailing—-but we will be well to attend our FAMILY get together on Sat. I HAVE MADE UP MY MIND THAT WE ALL WILL HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!! Have fun, folks, as grandma said so!! haha—-Now Pat—be nice!!! Sigh——

Boy, most Drs really do CARE, it is just that they are so busy, and it is so difficult to NOT take it personally, especially if we aren't feeling well—-
I am thankful that he is taking a personal supportive position with you, he really does care, and you do need extra right now to get straight—-

I guess that most of you know by now that I have a sarcastic side on the other side of my smile—-my Dr LISTENS too now, that they ACCIDENTLy discovered that large malignancy on my left kidney, it was already destroyed, and had to have immediate surgery!!! it was almost pathetically funny that NOW when I go, he LISTENS RESPECTFULLY, and i don't feel so defensive, almost like a real human being again——-sometimes it just takes a jolt to get folks together!! Sad, but so true in this day and busy age!! Hugs, and enjoy the Holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas and know that you now have REAL SUPPORT!! PAT R

Good thing you stayed on top of things Darla, cause sometimes when you try to talk to your doctors, they dont always hear what your trying to say to them. But Im so glad you found out what the problem really was and it wasn't in your head. The doctors are human too!!

Hi,
Glad your doctor finally took your problem seriously. Also glad you can test your bs with a meter. That will be important to help manage medications, diet, and exercise. I hope your numbers improve so you are normal and not so low any longer. :)

I agree with kd metformin usally does not bring down bs that far down. I think the avg. is 10%to 20% down on your bs count. Your bs with metformin and you exercise could bring your bs lower, then those pct. of 10 and 20.
Let us know how things are going

Interesting. I'm not going to really question the doctor because they did give you strips and a meter and seem to be more interested in you but it is very, very hard to go low with metformin, especially at night, regardless of the dose. Usually lows on metformin only happen with exercise. It would have been very beneficial to have been able to test when you have those feeling.

Yes, the Doctor did say that was unusual, but I do not know what else it could have been. I was told I may have not been eating properly either. I do know that when it comes to medications,my body is very sensitive to dosing, and also to some medications. Like the Doctor said to me yesterday, everybody is different on how their body reacts to medication etc…what may be a good dose for one, may be too much or too little for another. I have been through this a lot with medications.

I really have no clue as to what else could have been the problem. Thank you all for your input on this,it really means a lot to me. I started the 500mg. this morning,we will see how it goes.

kd,
I have a friend who has lows on Metformin. I too was skeptical, but I have seen it in person. My friend passed out on a workshop day last year, and scared us all terribly. Thankfully she was okay soon after drinking some oj.

It's not impossible, just rare. The chances are increased when you take certain other meds, have other health problems, do physical activity and such like. Also, without testing blood sugar you can't make a proper diagnosis of low blood sugar because the symptoms can come on pretty much at any blood sugar level and can also be due to other medical conditions. Not saying that's the case with your friend but when the OP is asleep and doesn't have a meter it's impossible to give an accurate diagnosis compared to a guess.
