My name is Fred Munzlinger. I was diagnosed as type II diabetic in April 2009. My doctor said I could control my blood glucose levels with diet and exercise. He prescribed a blood glucose meter and told me to take measurements three or four times a day. At that point, I was on my own.

I went to the internet to learn about type II diabetes. I also went to the internet to find free software that I could use to record BG readings, meals and exercise and times. I was disappointed, so I created an Excel spreadsheet. I am a retired computer software engineer and enjoyed creating the spreadsheets. I also found that my doctor did not want to analyze all my data and that I had to be my own analyst.

I am offering these Excel spreadsheets to anyone who would like them. They are free. I hope you find them useful. I could use constructive criticism and suggestions.

Send me your email address and I will send you the Excel spreadsheets.

what is it for which you seek?
BTW do you know that it is a violation of the Terms of use, which you signed when you joined, to post your email address or phone number in the open discussions? You may use the "edit" link below your post and edit out that address

BTW "Father fred" is no longer alive, so he'll not be answering your email anyway.

My name is Sean Munzlinger or Kenneth Munzlinger which ever you prefer. My Dad, Fred, usually called me by my middle name Sean but most know me by my first name Kenneth or Ken.

I am regretfully writing all of you to inform you that Frederick D. Munzlinger has died. Fred died on May 4th 2010 (Star Wars day!) after a two week battle with a very aggressive leukemia and receiving an equally aggressive chemo treatment. May the 4th be with my Dad… always.

Before Dad died I was aware that he was making free Excel based charts for fellow diabetics to download. What I did not know was the number of people that his efforts were helping. I am collecting information regarding his project so that I can help “Father Fred” to keep helping others.

I will be assisting Fred with his little project as best I can but I do have a day job, software development projects of my own, and a two year old boy. What I am hoping to do is continue to offer the same tools that my Dad has created and to also improve them. I have some very good software development tricks up my sleeve as I am a software developer by trade. Hopefully the end result will be some mobile versions of his ideas for Android or iPhone users.

My first step is to gather all the information I can that Fred left behind and make certain that his work is made available for free. This includes going through his email and replying to messages that have gone unanswered. My second step is to learn a considerable amount about Diabetes and I know nothing about Diabetes. Lastly, I hope to improve upon his idea and help Dad accomplish his goal of helping even more people, for free.

Warm regards,

Kenneth Sean Munzlinger

Kenneth Sean — Just wondering if you ever developed software or mobile apps to continue your father's work? I see that you posted this note more than two years ago and, while I am sure there are many more messages than what I see here, the site doesn't let me view more than just this page of info. Thanks! As others have noted, I am sorry for your loss. Hopefully time has healed your pain. And I'm guessing your son (and maybe additional children since then) brings you reminders of your father on a continual basis! —Steve

That is very kind and thoughtful of you to continue his work.
I wish for you nothing but the best and much success in doing so.

Dear Ken,
So sorry to hear that your Dad passed away. I just came across this blog with the possibility to share his spreadsheet. Good for you that you're thinking of continuing what he began. I've had type 1 diabetes for 26 years and am now using an insulin pump. I also had a battle with leukemia in '95 … now …I call it my adventure. So sorry that your Dad didn't make it through - I understand all that he and your family went through.
Well, if you need input from an insulin pump user to help out in completing yours and his dream, let me know.
God bless!

You either need Microsoft Excel or Open Office to open them. You can download Open Office for free from

What do you mean how can I get to them? They were downloaded to a directory on your computer. Do a search for the as a file "4_week-Master.xls" and you should find the directory they are located in. Then open the file with Excel or Open Office.

I have a MacBook, and I don't have Excel. I do have a program called Open Office which makes an Excel program useable on a Mac. It is a free download from Sun Microsystems (the Java folks). The web address is:
I hope this helps the other people who have Macs. :)

This is an excellent suggestion. I have open office on a PC that does not have Excel and it opens the spreadsheet. If you do not have excel on a PC, then download open office from the site listed above. The spreadsheets should work.

OK, here are a couple of links to download these Excel spreadsheets directly. By sheer coincidence, I have been working on an "official" Diabetic Connect Blood Sugar Log spreadsheet for several weeks. So I'm including a link to download Fred's spreadsheet and one for the Diabetic Connect version. They both do similar things. So you can try them both and see which one you like best.

Hello John;

I like what you have developed. You have some computing skills and talent. You should have made yours available to members a long time ago. Congradulations on a job well done.
I also sent you a one week master. This spreadsheet is slightly diffierent. It specifically has an exercise sheet that is not in the four week master. Some people like and use the exercise sheet. You might want to make it available also.

Great work

I thought I was the only one with a lousy doc. He gave me the diagnoies, wrote a script for metformin and tester. Said test tree times a day. That was the extent of it. No follow up. No information on the disease ect. I did't take it serious untill NOW. Two years lateter. I'm now in a panick trying to learn and do right by myself. I would love a spead sheet. Will e-mail you. Thanks much!!

It is generally a really bad idea to list your full email address on a public forum. Spammers search the internet for pages such as this one to collect a bunch of unsuspecting people's email addresses.

We will see what we can do about setting up a link to simply download the excel spreadsheet directly without having to exchange email addresses.
