Site is misleading

I am copying information that I just sent to the administrators of the site. I joined less that two hours ago, and I want to closed my account already.

I just created this account a couple of hours ago, and I need to have you close it. the first issue is that when I was in the process of setting up the account there was a URL for an free e-book. I have not been able to find a connection to it. Also at the home page of the site, there are a large number of the URLs that show connections to many different headings. All of these take me to a free offer page that when I click on "No Thanks", it takes me to a "Thank you" page that has no way to get to the information that is requested. When I find someone that writes code that requires you to take advantage of things you don't want, I loose all of my confidence in their ability to be an effective resource. Also, when I tried to send a complaint to the site by using their contact us connection, it errored out.

I agree with some of your points.
It seems at times this site is geared towards being a Pity Party Site instead of an Educational Information site.

There is a difference between Compassion and Pity,
just as there is one between Education and Ignorance.

Diabetes doesn't just come nor will it just go, ignoring it and it's complications doesn't eliminate it.
I would have expected this site to be a little more professional than what I have seen so far.

My comments are always flagged as inappropriate yet ramblings with no direction, no meaning are listed as 100% usefull to readers, go figure that one !

Why not create a page or category just for complaints,
put mine first and see how quickly and often the postings come !

"Why not create a page or category just for complaints"

There is, the discussion category "Site Feedback"

For someone who seems to be on here only to lecture us, not to learn about us or our problems, I find this post particularly offensive. No, this site is not for everyone, I don't know of any site that is. But for what it is, it does a fantastic job. Do I get mad at some of the posts, of course. I think that has been apparent. But for the most part I find it informative, friendly, and a safe place to vent. We all need to vent at times. What you call a pity party I call a place where anyone can say what is on their minds. We all need a place like that.

By the way, when someone who doesn't know me tells me to "smile", it's all I can do not to react either violently or with strong words.

Susie624 2010-01-27 12:06:18 -0600 Report

Donna I agree we all need to smile, but I'M like you I'll smile when I feel like it, not when I'm told to lika a puppet on a string.

Something in life is offensive to someone.
That's life and it will always be.
Educated guesses are still just that, guesses.
My comments and postings aren't intended to create controversy or belittle anyone, and everyone is entitled to their opinion whether or not you are in agreement with it.
Rose colored glasses change the way you see the world, not the overall outlook of the world, making something sweeter doesn't make it better, as diabetics we all know this, or should know it.
Offending others is not my intent, it doesn't solve or accomplish anything positive, nor will I apologize for something that is misinterpreted by someone else.
Education, Awareness and Action accomplish a great deal more than Ignorance and Excuses ever will.
No offensive intent intended, given or accepted.

Mays: Not sure what you mean by expecting the site to be "more professional". Many of us are professionals, but diabetes is the great common denominator. This site to me is amateur in the truest and best sense of the word. We are Olympians of survival, not professionally sick people looking for professional intervention (we have doctors and other health care providers we go to for that). In regards to your apparent distaste for pity, everyone is entitled to a period of time on the "pity pot", but everyone has to get off it if they are to survive and thrive. I have seen plenty of tough love on this site where peers help peers find their way out of pity and to newfound resolve to help themselves and others. To borrow from the 12 steps, why don't you share your experience, strength and hope, and take what you like from this site and leave the rest. I'll extend the same courtesy to you. Best wishes!

Hope you are still here mike, I agree with you [and a couple others who posted on this thread] that this site has some problems but what site doesn't? Still, I like it here, and have made several friends, and have learned a several things I would not have had I not been here. All in all, what one gets out of an experience [both in real life and on the web] is often in direct proportion to the effort put in. I suspect you'll find that we're not so bad. [Wanna be my friend?]

Mike if you are still here give it a chance. Ive only been here a month or to and have really gotten to know much more than I did about diabetis.

Unfortunately, Susie, it seems that Mike is gone. If you look at the header again, he is now "Deleted User 62816" He never did come back here to engage any of us. Sadly, he just took his ball and went home. :-<

Hey my name is LoriAnne, I just found and joined this website a month or so ago. I can tell you from a personal stand point I had a trouble or two in the beginning trying to join but in my case I attributed it to my lack of computer knowledge. But once I overcame those obstacles, I am SO GLAD I found this website and joined. I've already made some good friends, got some good recipes, etc. There is so much more to this website that I haven't even discovered yet, really. Don't give up, I have been so depressed lately and this website has helped me (not completely) to feel better. It's a stress relief. Everyone on this website has the same problems in one form or another. If anyone will understand we ALL WILL understand. Once you get in you can add me as a friend if you would like. I go by LORIANNE. Welcome to our website.

Please clean up this site…I feel it could be helpful to me.

We do have advertisers like Liberty whose offers are presented during the registration process for anyone who is interested. There should have been a "No Thanks" link on that offer that allows you to skip past it and then no one would call you.

I'm very sorry if that was not clear. We truly work very hard to be clear on any advertising offer that you'll only get called if it's something YOU are interested in. Otherwise, if you're not interested, you can always click "No Thanks" and no one will call you.

I agree with John, Mike. Also very sorry that your first impression was so negative. I can assure we're not intending to mislead anyone.

Please have a look through the Discussions, Product Reviews, Recipes and News areas. We hope you'll a lot of good user-generated content there.

I'm so sorry you ran into trouble while registering. Here is the link to download the diabetic diet book. It's completely free.

I understand your confusion about the links at the bottom of the home page. We have advertisers who bring us offers on various health-related products. But often those offers are on a limited time basis. So our links on the home page take you to a page that shows you all the current offers in our system. That collection of offers changes frequently.

We recognize that it isn't the greatest experience for visitors to the site. We are in the process right now of redesigning the home page and those links will not be on the new version.

Again, I'm sorry for your frustrating experience. I hope you stick around, because I think you'll find this is a very helpful community.
