I just wanted to say hello and I am just navigating this site. I have put in the search for the H1N1 vaccine and I got a lot of stuff about it, maybe too much to digest. I searched for an article on this site about it to no avail. With millions of this vaccine being administered daily in this country, I only read a few isolated cases from this community about adverse reactions. I did not read them all, unfortunately, my point is this, I was looking for a starting point on this discussion either from a news article or or something from the medical field. My doctor wants me to have the vaccine on top of the flu shot I already have had. If you look at my profile I absorb differently than most people with all my conditions. I have type 2 diabetes, I carry an ostomy pouch after have a total colectomy. The doc does not have the vaccine as of yet and it is not known when he will have it. The question is should I take it given my medical health and age (60)?

Hey just john I am new to the site also. just a couple of weeks. From my understanding about the swine flu is it really isn't really tough for most people. I have had a couple of fairly healthy people a work that have had it & they have all come through it fine. I think that if you have some medical problems, like heart & lung problems you may have a really hard time with it, & if your diabetes is fairly under control you should be fine. I am going to the doctor next week & I will talk to him about what he thinks about it. I just hope no one on this site gets it. Thanks CAthy A

I want to thank you all for the kind words and the info. I suspect that in the next few weeks I will know more of what to expect from the doctors as I am to meet with my endocrinologist after she sits down with the oncologists about some cancer in my thyroid area. It seems that the cancer has reappeared after my yearly checkup. By the way I have enough medical history for at least 5 maybe 6 people. Life is fine and raring to go.

Welcome! We are always glad to meetnew friends on this site. My doctor feels that the H1N1 flu seems to target younger populations than what you and I are. I got the regular flu shot and that is all I am planning to do. Recheck with your doctor and continue to research on your own and then make your decision. Keep asking questions we are a friendly bunch.

The H1N1 vaccine is the same as the seasonal one, if they had isolated the strain a couple of weeks earlier it would have been part of the seasonal jab and people wouldn't be talking about it. If you get the seasonal one there should be no reason no to get the H1N1 but if you are concerned talk to your doctor about your concerns.

Good to have you here, you will feel welcome and learn quite a bit here from the many members who are willing to help each other.. Stick with it, you'll be glad you did.
As for the shot, I would consider how much you trust your Dr., and how long you have been seeing him/her. Many people have different views on the subject, but in the end, you are the one who will make the final decision after weighing all the medical issues and facts involved.
Good luck and hang in there.
