Pain raise blood sugar?

I know that when we are sick that will play with our blood sugars. But can pain do the same thing? It just seems that since I have had a flare for my psoriatic arthritis my blood sugars have been all over the place. Oh and along with the pain there is inflammation. I did have a steroid shot but that has been awhile ago now. I was really excited when my BG went down to 140, but that was extreme carb control and now it's back up. Pretty sick of lettuce wraps about now.
Just wondering if any one has had the same problem.

Hi Alicia,
I am sorry you are hurting and I hope it lets up soon. I have fibromyalgia really bad and right now it is flairing up and my high doses of Lyrica are not helping. My bg is all over the place. I think the stress the pain can cause and put on the body can cause fluctuations in bg's. I can feel my face at the end of the day feeling older and drawn. It is from the pain.

Also, I have found this severe pain makes me unusually grouchy.

I hope this helps.

Pain is not the actual cluprit, but stress will raise your blood sugar levels. One pretty much goes with the other…
Finding a way to lower stress is very important!

I say yes. I've had chronic back pain for about 30 years, and was diagnosed with type 2 at age 32. The high blood sugars from steroid shots in my back didn't help after the diagnosis. Now, I have a spinal chord stimulator implanted and it helps immensely with the pain.Except now I have the pain of peripheral neuropathy to contend with. Our whole environment (internal and external) can have a large impact on BG, in my experience.

I have fibromyalgia and find that when I am having a flare, my sugars are slightly elevated. Not sure, but I think pain stresses our bodies and the elevated sugars are a response to that stress…make sense?? Some one please correct me if I'm wrong! :)

Sorry you are hurting by the way, hope the episode is short!

Take care!

No I have never experienced your problem but live with shoulder pain most of the time so I can sort of understand. Check out the recipe section here or google weight watchers recipes and look for ones that are low in carbs. That may help the lettuce wrap situation. I use whole grain small pita bread to make sandwiches and find that my bs does not raise as much with them. Are you stressed put these days? That raises bs too. Keep us posted and good luck to you.
Hugs, Betsie

I have experienced an increase in blood sugar when I am in pain, sick, and under a lot of stress myself.
