What are those you take? They lower your cholesterol without the Statins? I had told the new Dr. who put me on Zocor that I had it before and it caused the side affect that hurt my muscles more, and, made them more weak,he said that I had to take it as my cholesterol is very high and to let him know if I get the side affects again,he will then do tests on liver and something else that he said may be causing this side affect and not the Zocor!…Thank you…Darlene

I have high cholesterol and type 2 diabetics. Last Friday I learned I also have low thyroid. I did not know until Friday, low thyroid effects diabetes and cholesterol. My doctor told me if the thyroid is corrected the diabetes and the cholesterol both should go down. Anyone else had these problems. I also have idiopathic angioedema.

Also, with the idiopathic angioedema; I have not been able to tolerate any sulfa drugs; I can not take any diabetes medication thus far. Does anyone else suffer with this?

The doctor prescribed Lovastatin to lower my cholesterol and on top of that I also take one capsule of fish oil every day. My cholesterol is always under 175. A bit of advice though: don't take the fish oil with coffee, you'll regret it. Make sure you take it with cold water, otherwise the taste is very nasty and it seems to last all day.

I have a fish oil you can take that doesn't leave an after taste
Called One-Per-Day Omega fish Oil…you can find it @
Dominicks store…it's 1200mg…I like it because I only have to take one fish oil a day…

Unfortunately, every medicine is going to be trouble for your liver. Your liver is responsible for cleaning out the impurities in your blood, and medicine is basicly a toxin that your body works to get rid of. So the more meds, or the more potent, the more risk. It is just an unfortunate truth. That is why finding ways to avoid meds is so important. They should be a last resort.

I take Gemfibrozil for my cholesterol a generic for Lopid. I take twice daily 600mg. I have been taking it for several years with no side effects. My husband takes Lipitor and seems to have no side effects at least that we know of. The only difference I see in it is the price $10 vs.$30 co-pay. His doctor says he wants to keep him on Lipitor because he seems to have no problems taking it.

When I was diagnosed as borderline diabetes,I found out my cholesterol was 315!! My LDL was 215,HDL was 41…this was in July this yr. I just got to see a doctor yesterday,he was very concerned about the numbers and put me on Zocor,he said that mine was so high that this was the best to get it down…My cholesterol was high before this but was not this high…Hope this helps some!

I'm also on the Simvastatin, but had it before the diabetes was diagnosed. It's coming down slowly, making the right food choices has helped immensely.

I also take Simvastatin. And have been for two years now. I was diagnosed with diabetes three and half years ago. Since taking Simvastatin my cholesterol levels have dropped and now stay low. I have not had any side effects with this med either.

I had fine cholesterol until I was diagnosed with diabetes. So there is some connection, at least I believe so. I used diet and exercise to help, but I was put on Pravistatin and it has helped me. I have dropped my levels from 224 to 153 in about 9 months. It is a fairly mild medication and I don't suffer any side effects (that I know of) from it.

My doctor wanted to put me on Lipitor for my cholesterol…but I didn't want to take Lipitor…because of all the side affect I saw on the T.V…my doctor told me that Lipitor messes with the liver…so why would I want to take something that is going to mess with my liver…I don't know what to ask her for… as far as what to take for cholesterol…

Arie: Like Gabby said, anytime you take medication, there are always the possibilities of side effects, it just depends on which is worse…the condition you are trying to eliminate or the meds. There are so many meds out that, they can find something for you. The reason they generally suggest Lipitor is because it is one of the most effective, older, less expensive drugs. I took it for a while and it reduced my cholesterol to the lowest it had ever been in my life but then I began to experience some of the side effects and we switched to another med. Good luck! You need to get your cholesterol under control as it will bring on other problems.

If you are under a doctors care, they will probably put you on one of the statins. it helps with alot of diabetes issues and helps lower cholesterol.
